The Best Way To Leverage Your Knowledge

While I ate Thanksgiving dinner there was a beautiful woman in the Philippines named Letty transforming audio I recorded that morning into a multi-media presentation.

In this post I’m going to show you step-by-step how to leverage your knowledge to maximize content-creation. That means turning a single audio file into a video, a written article, and a multi-media PDF.

Step 1: Select the product you will create. What topics are you an expert in? What topic do you spend the most time studying? What are you most excited to talk about in conversation? What do people ask you for help in? These questions will help you get an idea of what you could make a product in.

Step 2: Create a mind-map. This is the outline of what you’ll be talking about. It serves as your guide when you begin recording the audio for your product.

Step 3: Set up your recording device. It’s time to get your hardware and software ready to receive the message from the mind-map. I use a Blue Yeti mic to record my audio. As far as I can tell it’s the best mic out there for the price. Beautiful audio. Switch the pattern so it’s on the circle with a chunk missing towards you (it’ll make sense when you have yours).

Step 4: Make that mind-map sing! Now it’s time to talk through your mind-map. This is the audio that will be used to create all the visual content. I recorded in the morning so it was imperative I have some caffeine in me to jump-start the sound of life in my voice.

Step 5a (with a VA): Send the files to Letty and give explicit instructions. After I exported the audio file I sent it to Letty via drop box with directions. Letty will then reiterate the tasks back to me and will begin moving forward. While she does the work I’m really slow at – video editing, creating PowerPoints – I can begin researching the next product.

Step 5b (without a VA): Alternative delegation. You can speak words much faster than you can type them. So even if you don’t want to make a video you can still have your audio cheaply transcribed. You can use Amazon’s Mechanical Turk or check out some of the transcription services offered at Fiverr. At the time I’m writing this you can get up to 15 minutes of audio transcribed for $5 on some of the “gigs” at Fiverr.

That’s that. A simple way to leverage your time and knowledge. When Will showed me the beauty of this model I just about crapped myself. “You mean I get to spend all my time researching and delivering ideas!? I’m in…” And I am, all the way.
