You have 2 options here. You can either create a blog that you know alot about... something that you are passionate about (ex: basketball, cooking, knitting, computers, etc), or... you can enter into a niche the market is hot and ripe, and is looking for a product or solution that can be the hero to them.
I personally like the option of finding the hot target market. With this option, you're very much likely to earn alot of sales from this niche. These people have a pressing problem that needs a solution NOW, and if you can provide for them, they will certainly pay you for it.
So how can you find niches like this? Well, it all starts with some research and development. Join forums and discussion boards to see what the common problems are in your niche. Join forces with similar people in your niche (non-competitors), and share ideas between each other. I'm sure you can easily find a niche with this technique alone.
Niches are easy to find. You just have to put your "thinking cap" on brainstorm on ways to find them. Here's another way to have success with marketing your blog.

I am going to assume that you are a rookie to blogging, internet marketing, and building a website. Therefore, I recommend that you use a service called "Blogger" to host your blog and to drive people simply and easily. With Blogger, you can sign up for free, and receive a free blog within 5 minutes.
You can easily incorporate Google Adsense and affiliate products on your blog with no sweat. You will just want to focus on getting alot of traffic to your blog, and place your adsense code and affiliate products in the right places so that you can maximize the chances of your viewers seeing these items, and clicking on them.
Don't build a blog the hard way. You can make alot of money with a simple Blogger blog, and don't let anyone tell you different. I would know, I'm a true testament to this belief.
