When we are trying to change problem behaviors whether its overeating, drinking too much alcohol, biting our nails, it is inevitable that we will slip at some stage of our journey.

A small slip doesn't need to turn into falling down the mountain completely. It comes down to our mindset and how we view the slip. Some people might get really annoyed at themselves and call them self a failure and say to themselves they will never be able to quit.

But there is another way...

Firstly don't run yourself down and call yourself a failure.

Instead, tell yourself, OK so I made a mistake. What can I do differently the next time? What can I learn from this?

"It's like a baby learning to walk. They will make mistakes and learn from them. They won't give up if they don't immediately find their balance.

When trying to give up problem behaviors urges and cravings are a normal part of the journey .

Notice and accept them.
Be mindful when they occur.

Stress and negative emotions are often the reason why people have a relapse. And also when they are exposed to people, places or circumstances that are associated with the addictive behavior. For example, Christmas overeating.

The answer isn't to avoid these situations, its about having awareness so that you know when you are in certain situations you will be prone to relapsing.

The following technique is a useful way of coping when you feel the urge.

Its called urge surfing.

"The urge is like a wave," he says. "It goes up and down. You don't try to get rid of it, but accept it and let it pass." People tend to think that urges will escalate infinitely if they don't yield to them -- but in fact, like a wave, they rise to a peak and then fall.
Even if you don't give in the urge will pass.

Our patterns of behavior are like programs of a computer.

Our habits are hardwired into our brain trough neural connections. Each time we resist the urge to engage in the unwanted behavior it weakens the neural connections. Each time we perform a habit, the brain pathway is strengthened.

Think back to when you were learning to drive. For most of us we got into the car in the first lesson and didn't know anything about driving. We then began to set up a new neural pathway in our mind for driving. Each time we drove, the pathway was strengthened. Over time, it just comes automatic to us.

This means that if we resist the urge once, it will be easier to resist the next time. Its about rewiring new pathways in your mind.

The following acronym will help you to deal with a slip or fight the urge.

S stands for stop: pause for a moment and consider what you are doing.
O means observe: think about what you are sensing, feeling and experiencing, and what events led to the situation.
B is for breathe: take a few deep breaths.
Then, E expand your awareness and remind yourself of what will happen if you keep repeating the unwanted behavior and how you will feel afterward.
R stands for respond mindfully: remember that you have a choice, that you are not powerless, and that you don't have to continue the undesired behavior.

In my own life I am currently trying to change my behavior of overeating. I was doing really well and had lost 1 stone in weight and then Christmas came and I fell back into my old habits and started to gain weight again.

I am now getting back on the bandwagon of loosing weight. I am reminding myself why I set out to achieve this goal in the first place. I don't want to live my life fat and unhealthy, I want to feel vibrant, confident and alive.

I am not beating myself up for falling down. I am accepting that I am only human.

I am also trying to build in the habit of blogging each day and watching internet marketing training.

My goal is to to earn enough income online so that me and my partner can leave our jobs.
