Google A.I. Search Reminds Me of AOL

Now that Google has committed fully to using A.I. in search results I find myself thinking of AOL. When I first began using a computer 25 or so years ago every person I KNEW was using AOL. It was the accepted thing to do and 'sign up for AOL' was widely distributed advice at the time.

I'd been using computer programs at work but a personal computer was new to me and I was learning from my older son (who had given me his used computer).

When I asked him why everyone I knew used AOL he explained it simply.

He said if you use AOL it's like taking a tour bus on the highway - you will be taken to the most popular destinations and the route will be chosen for you.

He said without AOL you are driving your own car and choosing your own lane. I never joined AOL.

Doing some google searches this week the results remind me of AOL - I have A.I. ads - I have A.I. descriptions/explanations and A.I. 'summaries' and 'questions answered by A.I. A.I. gives me a list of sites to visit and the majority of those sites are Amazon, Reddit, eBay, BIG sites.

Yes I know I can add a string to avoid the A.I. - though I usually just click on 'web' to change views. I don't know if that changes the results or not - haven't looked that closely.

It struck me as a highly advanced version of AOL - the A.I. tour bus will take me to the biggest mall where we will all shop at the recommended anchor stores. I HATE tours where everyone is herded around while given the same practiced information.

I'm one that prefers exploring the side streets and alleys where the little shops are - where the unique products can be found - where the 'tourist traffic' is thin.

It may change with improvements - but for now it seems my google searches have everything to do with 'size' of a site and little to do with SEO. Also occurs to me that Google's ability to prompt A.I. searches could be used to disseminate 'chosen' information or sway public opinion.

In one search this morning I made a general search (3 words) that is a highlight in recent news. The results - every single one of the results - promoted ONE side of the story while returning ONLY negative results for the 'other side'. I did several more search and found most search results were fairly balanced but 1-2 out of 10 returned biased results. (I say 'biased' because those results were always slanted in the same direction...if it were random, that would not be the case).

Tour bus? Google as Influencer? Anyone else noticed changes in search results since full implementation of A.I.?

I remember back in the day you could get the AOL floppy disks in the checkout line at Walmart.

    Times change.

    Google knows everything now.

In time, Google will be overthrown and a new thing will come along.

I refuse to advertise on FB anymore...

it's nothing but a scammers paradise.

But, in its day FB was the 'go to' thing.

I still have faith in Meta Ads, especially Instagram. I agree that Facebook is full of scammers, but you can still generate business in most niches if you do it right.

Not saying A.I. is LIKE AOL - just that the use of it (overuse of it) is a trend we've seen before. We've forgotten a little restraint goes a long way.

I had a computer on my desk at work also, and I wasn't
enthused about getting a home computer, but eventually
    needed it for business.

Back then, around 1997, AOL was just about the only
portal option, unless you subscribed to internet service
    from your telephone company.

AOL was cheaper and more convenient, because you
could use it anywhere there was a phone jack.

We had the internet service from the phone company - we spent a lot of time 'waiting for connection' on that dial-up.

AOL was 'easy - do it for you' - and doing without AOL was learning your own way through the maze. Wasn't that hard to do if you didn't believe the AOL commercials.

I guess it's the 'let us do it for you' aspect that struck me as similar to AOL.

I totally see what you mean! Yes, this is the impression Google's AI search gives me, it's like taking us on an AOL tour bus; it shows us only the large, generally famous sites while ignoring the relatively obscure yet unique ones.

I have also realized sometimes there is even bias on what is offered to you when you search something on the internet. Once in a while it is like some persons feel that some ideas should receive more airtime, which is quite worrying. Well, maybe we will have to continue wandering those side roads in order to come across the cool things we actually liked.

Our area is getting a new Waffle House restaurant and I was curious about the Company so I looked up the organization (privately owned) and startup costs and salaries, etc.

The results of the salary search were the 'average wages for Waffle House in California'. There are no Waffle House restaurants in California.

I tried other searches - for example "california waffle house menu prices" and the info returned was a list of menu items with prices. Again, not possible.

Google's A.I. search results are trying to give me the info I want - by making it up....just like the reports of fake 'case law' provided to lawyers....and like the fake books 'footnoted' in a thesis.

A.I. created 'facts' to answer the question....but they were not facts at all. I'm sure this will improve but it's something to be aware of if you rely on google searches for information.

Google is terrible at the moment have not tried the AI yet but between how bad the search results I get on google and YouTube are. I really don't think google can put a decent AI together.

In any case I think the issue is with google not with AI in general. It's good to use caution and maintain personal human agency. Again it's artificial intelligence modeled after what humans believe is intelligence. So if it tells you what you want to hear. Appears to have biases. And makes stuff up 1/3 of the time.
The great part is when the hallucinations make a whole lot of sense.

The biases of google AI are a result and a reflection of the biases of the people at google programming and training the AI.

Yes there has been a change in the search results from when A.I. has been fully implemented. I've noticed this as well.
