I want to learn how to write effective prompts for generating product advertisement images using AI image tools (like Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, etc.)

Most of the AI systems can write their own prompts.

Some image generators can improve upon what you
wrote or you can ask one of the LLMs like ChatGPT
to write the prompt for you.

You can upload images similar to what you want to
ChatGPT and it can write prompts for those, or you
can just tell it what you want.

It's important to always be thinking outside the box
if you plan to use AI to its fullest potential to serve
    your purposes.

Just keep your prompts clear and to the point. Say what the main subject is, the vibe you want, and the few details that actually matter.
Don't over-explain, and if something's important, mention it again in another simple way so the model doesn't miss it.

Start by being very specific about the product and the goal of the ad. Include details like the product type, material, color, background, lighting, camera angle, and the mood or style you want (e.g. clean, luxury, lifestyle). It also helps to mention the use case and target audience, and to iterate - generate, adjust the prompt, and refine based on what works.

Effective AI prompts for product ad images rely on clarity, structure, and marketing intent. Clearly describe the product, its features, audience, setting, and visual style. Include lighting, camera angle, branding elements, and emotional tone to guide the AI accurately. Adding negative prompts helps avoid errors and distractions. Well-defined, detailed prompts lead to more realistic, high-quality, and conversion-focused ad visuals

I use AI frequently to generate images, both for business use and for 2D animation. I've been doing the animation since last April (about 9 months), and here's what I can tell you:

Despite my learning about the process, how to word prompts, the best way to work with AI to generate base prompts, and more to speed up the work...

...image generation still takes HALF THE TIME of the project.

And you need to go into the work expecting this.

If you do better, congratulations. But expect image generation to be a significant time sink.

I use an AI to generate base prompts from my instructions and descriptions. The AI will make that for me. Then I will go test it in the image maker, ** without adjustment **. You need to keep high school science in mind: change only ONE variable at a time.

Then I go back to the prompt AI with the results. I often paste one of the generated images into the thread and tell the AI what is wrong with it. This creates a feedback loop, and I want you to focus on that phrase because feedback loops are important.

From there, the prompt AI will generate an updated prompt, which I will then go use in the image maker. We will improve from there.

Now this may sound simple, but the feedback loop is important because it means your development is iterative and you can see how you got there from here. If you keep restarting from scratch, you'll learn nothing.

And unexpected things will happen. The image generator AIs have preferences or prejudices. You'll discover these as you go:

Tell the image generator this is a "racing" scene, and suddenly all the characters are wearing those fingerless leather gloves with the holes. You will fight to get the AI to draw a right-hand drive car and driver. The cars will all have flying wing spoilers.

To eliminate and replace these, you need that feedback loop operating. You need to handle one issue at a time. And it still may not work. This is what takes so much time.

Eventually, you and the prompt AI may come to the conclusion that this approach simply will not work. You may get there after 20 minutes, 30, or 40 minutes. It should not take you an hour or more to come to the conclusion.

At this point, the prompt AI or you will realize you have to pick a different approach. The base prompt will have to be competely rewritten, and from a different perspective. Sometimes, that means abstractly describing the scene and not saying "racing" at all (because that word triggers "I know how 'racing' looks" in the image AI). Sometimes, in my animation world, that means moving to a layered/compositing methodology.

You will need the following for a good prompt:

    > subject
    > style (eg. cinematic, anime, medieval tapestry, photorealism)
    > camera angle/height/lens/perspective
    > lighting (location and intensity)
    > Environment / World
    > Details & Materials
    > Color Palette & Mood
    > Motion & Energy
    > Narrative Intent
    > Constraints / Negatives
    > Output Control (how finished do you want the final product to look).

If you are stuck, I recommend telling the prompt AI, "Ask me questions, one at a time, to build the image generation prompt. Ask me about things I've missed".

And you can include the list in there if you want, saying you want to make sure we cover these things.

Here is an example of a high quality product image prompt so you get the idea:

A modern insulated travel mug with a smooth ceramic-coated exterior in a vibrant coral-to-teal gradient finish, standing upright.

High-end ecommerce product photography, photorealistic, crisp and clean commercial style.

Shot straight-on at eye level, 70-85mm lens look, minimal perspective distortion, sharp focus across the entire product.

Bright, even studio lighting optimized for ecommerce: soft frontal key light, balanced fill to eliminate harsh shadows, subtle top light to enhance color vibrancy without glare.

Perfectly clean white background (#FFFFFF), seamless, no horizon line, no shadows touching the edges of the frame.

Centered composition with consistent margins on all sides, product fills approximately 70% of the frame, optimized for product listing thumbnails and zoom views.

Material details clearly visible: smooth ceramic texture, glossy gradient coating with clean color transitions, precision-finished rim and lid.

Color palette is bold but controlled: coral, teal, soft white highlights, true-to-life color accuracy suitable for ecommerce.

Mood is fresh, energetic, and premium.

No people, no hands, no text, no props, no reflections of the studio, no dust, no scratches, no distortions, no warped logos.

Ultra-high resolution, clean edges, professional ecommerce finish suitable for Amazon, Shopify, and direct-to-consumer product pages.
