Html tags then and now

So I used to get into ranking back in mid 2000s. I had an editor who charged me 20 dollars for great rewritten articles with keywords and keyword phrases I told the editor to include xx amount of times. Then I went in and fine tuned the html tags... title, description, keywords, robots etc..

Then I took a break....

So what has I missed? Where do I restart??

Ps. I hope this is under the correct forum.

Provide stellar content - better than any of your competitors and get really good links from real websites that have to make a decision about linking to you (links you can place yourself no longer do much if anything to help you rank). That's the mantra today and always has been the way to rank any site.

True SEO has not changed much in the last decade. What has changed is that search engine algorithms are now "smarter" and not as easily manipulated as they were in the past. Crappy, easy to get links and spun content don't make the grade anymore. Be different, be better!

Ok. So as I did before creating a template with products links on the left providing 2 to 3 paragraphs of text written for that page topic along with the 3 major meta tags doesnt work?
If I were to do ahh affiliate marketing is there a site for templates... for is it Wordpress that everyone uses.
Again Im just tossing it around if I have the time before I do it. How about Blogs? When I was doing SEO in 2006ish blogs were to tell people about your life struggles etc.

Penguin and subsequent algorithm updates did far more than penalize website for overuse of keyword anchor tags. They penalized websites for all sorts of weak links that were placed with the intent of manipulating search rankings.

The new Penguin does not penalize websites at all (according to Google). It just ignores all of the bad links. That may seem like a penalty for sites that formerly were ranking well with bad links but it is really just returning them to the place in the SERPs where they belong. Of course, manual penalties still exist that WILL penalize a website for bad links.

Rule of thumb: If you can place the link on someone else's site all by yourself, don't bother; it is worthless (or worse).

Instead of rewriting articles, write from them scratch

Then quit before you start then... Or simply work on getting better. Instead of spinning try reading 3 articles on the same topic and re writing the content in your own words.. it really isn't that hard.. and if you don't like that either, then refer to the first sentence again LOL

        best of luck Man!

        Don't be so self-deprecating.

I used to suck at writing too, until I started playing storyline-focused video games (a certain FPS comes to mind), and that's when I started paying attention to character dialogues, practiced writing on different writing styles, and read them aloud to know what it's like listening to them. I also watched movies and TV series to understand different grammar styles (and these aren't normally taught in schools), and that's when I started writing my own blog.

I stopped blogging, but now write down my thoughts on a journal, still learning and improving how I write and comparing my style from 2009 versus 2019.
