I would think the main purpose is to make money, but it sounds like you're more interesting about the evolution of marketing. Internet marketing enables using a different avenue (the internet) compared to other "traditional" methods and due to the size and capacity allows you access to many more people than arguably any other marketing method.

The new consumer purchase model is migrating to purchase more and more items online. From groceries to services, items to be purchased are not only products per se anymore. Think of all the brick and mortar establishments out there, and think of them being online. Internet Marketing now directs consumer traffic to these online platforms and allows them to make the purchase there and then.

    The purpose, make money!

The changes,...Pay Per Click, (PPC) has gone from being able to direct link to Clickbank offers and squeeze pages, at 5 cents an add click to none of that and $5 an add click.

Or in other words, PPC is virtually dead.

Advertised lists are usually expensive, thrashed rubbish, Youtube lists do convert, (l have used that) but unfortunately the owners, have messed that up so much, it is becoming harder to use it.

Private lists, some can be quite profitable.

Websites have going into information based, Grumpy Cat won a court case, you can watch a tropical island, beach for hours on end, and like that!

And Colonel Sanders has apparently become a woman.

I agree with ChrisBa that the main purpose of internet marketing is make money. And nowadays, everyone use the internet skillfully, online shopping is more and more popular. So internet marketing obviously appears to supply the demand of customer. Besides, internet marketing has some benefit:
1.Internet marketing enables you to be open for business around the clock without worrying about store opening hours or overtime payments for staff.
2.By marketing on the Internet, you can overcome barriers of distance. You can sell goods in any part of the country without setting up local outlets, widening your target market. You can also build an export business without opening a network of distributors in different countries.
3.Marketing products on the Internet costs less than marketing them through a physical retail outlet.
4.Internet marketing enables you to personalize offers to customers by building a profile of their purchasing history and preferences.
5.Internet marketing enables you to take advantage of the growing importance of social media.

You couldn't be more wrong. Well, maybe you could...

Keep spouting this false rhetoric though. You might actually persuade some people from becoming more competition for people like me who know how to use PPC effectively.

It isn't false, ask a newbie to make money from PPC in 2005, and he directs it to a squeeze page or to a Clickbank product at about $5 per 100 clicks.

Or if virtually guaranteed to make a profit since the CB product has a $20 profit for affilaites.

Now, no CB links are allowed, SP are still allowed by only if it is on the last page of a website, (which is virtually useless and expensive, tried that).

Sure you can still make money with it but it is considerably harder to do, especially for a newbie.

I doubt that a newbie, will know how to create a $1,500 product.

Adwords would be more than viable for products like that.

You do not need a $1,500 product to make money from AdWords traffic. You do not even need a $15 product. Hell, you don't have to have a product at all.

You really should stop commenting like this about AdWords. It makes you look foolish.

Just because you utterly failed attempting to use AdWords, doesn't mean it doesn't work.
