Beginner's Fear: What about Privacy?

Hi Warriors,

I am traveling around the world - full time on a cruise ship. I have decided to join the fun in the online world and become a Travel Blogger. I have set up an Email List and I am in the process of gathering subscribors to share my adventures.

I have lots of stories to tell and many photos to share. However, there is something nagging inside me: Traveling is part of my life, Traveling IS my life, Traveling is basically my private life.
And all pictures and stories I share is basically sharing my entire life...somehow I am a little nervous about that.

Do you have any thoughts on that?

I agree with Diablo, vlogging would be such a massive opportunity for you if your life consists of constant travel.

No reason to be nervous, on the contrary, on of the best ways to establish an audience is to let them into your life and be genuine and transparent with them. Be yourself, and your audience will come to you.

You've got a good opportunity to build a lifestyle vlog/business around what you do, and showing your life can build a seriously strong audience that identifies and relates to you. Talk about your journey & how you ended up doing what you're doing.

      Hope this helps!

No, you don't need to worry about that as long as your content is friendly and helpful to audiences.

    IsaSantos -

Use the forum search to look up threads by RyanBiddulph . He's a member here who has been traveling the world - and blogging about it - for a few years. I think his threads and posts would help you.

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.

    Hello,

Your pictures might be shared with out you saying, it is ok, but people do this all the time, it is not right but they do, they steal mine sometimes, so like others say here, you should be fine, just think social media is all about sharing, so start, just don't post anything you don't want shared, because it just might get shared with you knowing about it.

Also I make videos all the time, and I let others share them all over the world, I don't care

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Rob

  • Yes, you will be sharing stories about your life. But you do still have some control on what you want to share. This is where you need to decide what falls within the realm of your public life and your private life.

Hi, @IsaSantos. Pursue your plan! We all know that vlogging is pretty much trending and you being on a cruise ship is an advantage. Since traveling is your passion, it is definitely easier for you than choosing other niches.

Congratulations on deciding to move in the direction of your dreams.

It may not be easy however it'll be rewarding.

It'll beat looking back on your life at some point in the future and regretting that you didn't have the courage to do what you really wanted to do.

    My thoughts...

It's because you're pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone.

When we start to do that we feel uncomfortable because it's not something we do naturally (for the most part).

People spend so much time trying to be somebody they aren't, being fake, that when you want to be authentic, be the real you it can feel "odd" for a bunch of reasons.

I won't espouse theories here I'll just encourage you to follow your heart and know that I'm rooting for you to succeed.

I spent years doing jobs I basically hated and never really had one "job" for more than a year. It was only when I met a mentor, a man named "John Blackham" on a temporary contract assignment and he told me to do what gives me the most satisfaction, only when I took that advice did I feel I was happy to wake up and work.

Scary? Yes just like you've mentioned.

    Worth it? You bet.

    You've got this...seriously you have.

I guess this is a choice that you need to make. If you are planning this strategy you will need to accept the lack of privacy.

You are better off. Privacy on the internet does not exist. There is very little you can do even if you use pseudonyms and DBA's and all that crap. If people want to find out who you are, where you live, all that BS, any child can pick up Google and do that or any background checker SaaS software. Besides, transparency is what works these days anyway, nothing less will do. You may as well (in my opinion) be 100% committed to your project, knowing that's going to be a thing, or not do anything at all. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth.

I would also say vlogging, it's the new trend and i think it's great that you want to do that and share your experience. As for the privacy, since you choose to share your life...not really private.

Well, you can't be very private when you are trying to build a traveling blog.

Privacy and a traveling blog don't go well together.

You will have to make a decsion here because if you want your blog to take off then you will need thousands of people to visit your blog and see your content - throw privacy out the window!

Now, there are levels of privacy. For instance, you could only share bits and pieces of your travels and adventures. You could never be in the photos for example. And you could even make up a pen name. So, there could be some sort of privacy but not fully. You get what I mean?

    Hope this helps!

Document instead. Since you love to travel that would be cool for people to watch on a dedicated youtube channel. Documenting is kind of vlogging but only better. Don't be nervous. Just provide value, deliver your message on a consistent basis and crush it dude.
