How can I know who my target audience is and what it needs?

Part of a marketing strategy is to do a targeted audience search. I'm very good at producing and managing products and reasonable with online promotion however doing research is something I just do not know how to do.

What data do I need to collect? And how do I know I have a sufficient sample?
How do I find out what products my target audience is willing to pay?

You can do surveys to create your customer profile and market research. You can also do interviews. After you get all those data, reassess your product or brand and do some valuable modification that fits their needs.

    • Thanks for your comment, but I feel he could be more specific.
Of course, I can not expect a full dissertation here on this forum. Could you suggest links or even a course that supports your point of view? Something that shows me what specific questions I should ask to know who my target audience is.

If you're talking about finding your target audience for your eCommerce (or already effectively targeted audience), you can find that and create a potential customer profile from Google Analytics under
Audience -> Demographics (Do your audiences have the capability to pay.)
Audience -> Geo (Can you supply your products to your target audiences) &
Audience -> Interests (what your target audience is willing to pay)
That is what I mostly use. Other than that, you can also use the online survey tools that help you create questionnaires. Hope this helps

You need to ask better questions, these are general and vague and I'll explain why.

A product you produce for high end buyers will differ greatly than one for the masses, so suficient sample is relative.

So, if I buy a 750 dollar report from a respected source on investing, it would be a different audience than a 75 dollar report on investing in Forex, see?

One place to start is with WHICH audience do you want? Separate by dollars. Those who buy 750 dollar reports (lower number but with more money to spend) OR those who can afford 75 dollars, much higher audience numbers but more competition for that little bit of money.

If you really are good at producing products, your mix might be a little bit of both, but it takes the same amount of time to produce a 750 dollar report (product) as it does a 75 dollar one.

What are YOUR strenghts and what have you already produced, and can you reuse any of those and retool for a different market (audience).

We don't get enough information from your post to offer any useful advice and you'll find many people who have been fooled by their surveys when people SAY they want something, but when it comes time to PAY, that want has faded.

Start with the AUDIENCE you want. What does it look like? Where is it?

    • Thanks for your comment.
I really understand your point of view and totally agree. But the fact that I'm really confused about it keeps me from being more specific. My current branch is Website Hosting, I believe you should know. I've done a survey with my clients, however as I have a sadly small number (only 15 clients) only 5 responded. The questions I asked are the following:

      - Currently, what is your biggest difficulty in maintaining or boosting your online business?
      - What tools do you consider essential to succeed online?
You can see this form here (you'll have to use Google Translate): https://felinto.typeform.com/to/ZIfSwf

But my focus is not to interview my current clients, although they are a valuable source of information. Imagine that I am creating a business from scratch. How do I know what the site visitors need .. what products would I buy, where is it? On Google ? Facebook ? Linkedin? What terms do you use to find my search on Google?

I understand that in general my question is very broad and I do not expect you to be able to explain everything about market research here in this online forum. But feel free to quote links, tutorials or courses that support your arguments. Thank you.

This can be challenging and everyone will do this differently.

How I do it is I look at my competitors. Do as much research on them as possible, who are they, who are there customers, who are there demographics, etc. Look at what they are doing and that will give you an idea.

  • Can you suggest to me which tools you use to do this and what are the questions you ask about the audience of your competitors?

One of my favorites and it has a free version is SimilarWeb.

You can type in your potential competitors and it will show you their traffic sources, all broken down withe numbers so you even get their volume.

On paid version it even shows you what ads they run, how long they have been running and more. Free version is limited to five results only per search but still. Thats plentt to get a good idea of who their customers are and what they desire.

    • WOW! This article is really comprehensive. I was doubtful about the following point, at one point the author of the article recommends finding what is common among my clients. Something in common that I could find would be the sites and blogs that my person frequents. So I ask you, what suggestions do you give me so that I can do this? How do I find out which sites my persona accesses without asking her or bothering her?

  • Thanks for everyone's tips.

Really are very useful tips. But I'm still confused on the subject. Could you point me to a course or book that guides me step by step about what I should do at each step? A blog on the subject would also be interesting.
I saw the hint in a video of hiring someone on upwork.com to do that job for me. Have you done that already? Is it a good strategy?

Go where your audience is... usually it is inside related online forums. Once there, see the kind of issues and questions they have.
