What is the best Web Hosting to use?

Depends on your skill level and needs at this point. I personally like digital ocean because the price is so cheap, but they lack instant 24/7 online type support. Companies like hostwinds offer really cheap shared hosting and have 24/7 support. Might even be able to spin up a server with a 1 click wordpress type installer.

If you use the forum search you will find numerous threads with this same question and you will also find that my above statement is true.

If forced to recommend I would say Hostgator, for a newbie.

Agreed.

I used Bluehost for 6 years despite people complaining that EIG companies had bad service. I got good service and they had backups for me and solved hacker problems every time. The SSL issue became the dealbreaker, though, after Google mandated the change...and that's Komodo's fault, really.

I moved to Siteground and have been happy there so far. Much lower rates, customer service about the same level. SSL certificates have been easy to deal with, except for a limit on 20 per week which caused a hiccup at domain transfer time but shouldn't be a problem going forward. And again, that's not the host's fault, really, but their partner.

I have business level hosting and that's an important consideration, ie. not entry level.

As of right now I am planning to have at least 2 or 3 websites which all can be directed back to my main website.

I am just starting out so my traffic will be low in the beginning. In the beginning I am thinking 50 visitors first month, 100 visitors 2nd month, 300 on the 3rd month, 500 on 4th month, 5th month 1000 about hopefully 3000 visitors monthly 6 months from now.

I suggest you to go with bluehost, digital ocean and hostgator. If you've more traffic, they will be suspend the hosting plans. I had some experience with bluehost. But they warned and transferred my hosting to Emailpapa. This is best and good support. I'm using their servers for past 3 years without any issues.

It depends on your budget and how much time you really want to spend fixing things.

I used Hostgator (shared) for years and lately I have been dealing with nothing but problems. My sites and my client's sites have been under brute attacks and one of my client's sites got hacked three times! I fixed it, but what a pain!

I just switched to a fully managed hosting company. It's not much more than I was paying, but worth a bazillion dollars to me, not having to deal with the headaches.

Do a little research on the different kinds of hosting you require (think future plans), and then decide how much a headache is worth.

Fully managed is great, especially if you're going to go with Wordpress, too. The company I use does the WP install (not 'quick install') and they will debug any problems, like say a plugin makes your site go all wonky. Their turn around time is awesome!

I built all my first websites with Host Gator... but I wasn't impressed with the speed. So I tried out Site Ground and the speed was much better. Personally, I think you should go with Site Ground. They're one of the best.

Hey Mary,

Google cloud platform offers $300 credit for hosting. It's a bit of learning curve but you learn a great deal about servers. You can deploy your site with bitnami wordpress once you sign up. All you need is a gmail account. And there are tutorials that help you get a free SSL cert. Also, google app engine and firebase is free if you ever want to launch a static site that is not Wordpress. Google has global servers so it's super fast.

Start with Bluehost shared hosting as it is cheapest and reliable, however make sure that the servers are located near your primary target audience country. Once you are able to generate enough traffic for your website, switch to VPS.

I've used GoDaddy for years. I've stayed with them because they have a hosting package that fits any business and their support is absolutely fantastic. In the years I've been with them I've never been disappointed or had any problem getting fast, accurate service when needed.

I personally find Go Daddy the most user unfriendly platform around. Hostgator is great for newbies as you can get up and running quickly and cheaply.

One thing not mentioned here is a lot of companies are now starting to charge for a year up front with no monthly payment option.

As mentioned for almost any company mentioned there will be good and bad reviews, if you not technical make your host has cpanel.

Another thing to consider is the type of sites, if you are auto blogging with 1000's of pages some hosts cant handle that and all your other non autoblog sites will crumble, I found out the hard way.

Hi Mary,

I would not think of a company per se, but getting a VPS or some premium form of hosting.

If you are a newbie you likely have little blog traffic but the process usually goes like this:

1 - Buy cheap hosting; since you have no traffic, no probs as it appears to be good.

2 - Your traffic increases and you start seeing down time, slow load times, rarely.

3 - Hosting company overloads server and your traffic increases, causing all types of issues.

4 - You choose a relatively unknown but reliable hosting company, pay $10 to $15 a month versus $3, and get awesome hosting.

It's more about going with a smaller but reliable company as a newbie, again though.....going with a VPS as your traffic increases seems to be the way to go, to avoid host hopping.

Even with little traffic, avoid $3 a month deals. Always, and I mean always, leads to problems as you grow your blog.

The OPs question has been asked and answered already and he made his choice.

Good to see a positive results from questions asked. Often, even if resolved, the OPs don't give feedback on their results or decisions so you never know what actually happened good or bad.

So well done OP for some great thread etiquette.

Also just wanted to add my 2c worth.

I appreciate that everyone has different experiences and generally if you are happy with your hosting you would say that is a good choice. So any answer is subjective. As is this one I guess

However from a purely newbie or new starters point of view I would recommend Hostgator.

Is it the best hosting? not really. Is it the worst? not at all. But it has a couple of things going for it that makes it great to get started with

Monthly fee. Unlike Bluehost that has annual fee. So if you decide you don't like it your stuck for 12 months.
It's simple and it works out of the box. Most set-ups are already in place and things just work. Godaddy and others can sometimes need more setting up and configuring. New starters don't need the extra hassle.

Depends what you want to do.... I exclusively use 1&1 UK now, works well for the majority of things (HTML pages, wordpress, etc), but some people seem to find certain scripts can be a bit funny to set-up on if you have to do it manually 'cos it's not in the auto-installer or requires actions a bit more complicated than setting paths and using the install.php files to set it off.
Already been using them since 2002, so recently they gave me an upgrade to their top-spec package with a 17% permanent discount.

Recently drop-kicked Arvixe after using them as a back-up host for things that were until a couple of years ago not do-able on 1&1... Arvixe were absolutely doing me head in with easily over-loaded servers, nagging e-mails + bugging me to pay for renewing the last of the domains with them I'd cancelled anyway.

Depending on your budget I'd recommend to educate yourself first..read some review sites about different hosting plans and providers. I personally use A2hosting, it's not the cheapest but it's reliable and has plenty of features..I'd never recommend to choose the cheapest one..choosing a quality hosting provider as it's gonna save a lot of head aches later..

Best will vary from everyones individual experience like one host which is best for you might not be the case with other one due to so or other reason. Like for my personal issues I have faced lots of issue with hostgator, poor support uptime issue. After lots of reasearch presently I have been with 2 host both are pretty good in terms of support and uptime.

You can easily go with any best-shared hosting provider but one of the biggest problems with this is that when you start getting some traffic, you will face a lot of issues like downtime, server problems etc. So that's why I always recommend going with cheap Cloud hosting like digital ocean or Linode. As they will provide you cheap unmanaged hosting, so if you don't have any knowledge about managing server then I recommend you to go with cloudways or any other source that help you to manage your account with them. One of the biggest advantages of this is that you can easily upgrade your hosting package anytime with a just single click, in case your start receiving more traffic.

You have plenty of options to choose from. If you have any specific requirements you may narrow the list of the hosts that will be good for your project. For instance, think whether you want the plan that you'll use to include SSD storage, CDN, 24/7 support, etc. Some people also have specific preferences on the location of the servers.

I recommend sites.unet.com if you're looking for a hosting for landing pages. They allow to add any number of sites and domain names but do not support php, so can be used as LP hosting only.
