Affiliate reference cookies - can these generally be used anywhere?

Hi guys,

My question is this:

Say I have an affiliate partnership with some merchant, example.com, and that they have provided me with an affiliate URL along the lines of the following:

example.com/signup.php?aff=123

My question is, can I now instead point the visitors to the merchant site in the following way instead?

example.com/homepage.php?aff=123

In other words, I want to direct visitors from my site to the target's home page instead of directly to a sign-up page which feels a bit too pushy, using exactly the same tracking code.

I'm new to the whole affiliate thing, and I suspect this question is about one of convention (i.e. how do merchants generally configure their site to behave?) since, from a web development point of view, this is simply about asking the developer to keep a track of the tracking code using cookies - which is fairly trivial.

But I suspect that most merchants would not accommodate this? Can anyone comment?

Thanks,
