I plan on starting a Shopify store and doing affiliate marketing at the same time (should be able to make a living off the internet that way) but of course have no idea where to start, I plan on starting with free traffic (preferably free traffic that doesn't take forever of course) then moving up to paid traffic/both if it's better (once i have enough money to even do that lol).

A good source for free traffic is social media. Start a few profiles and pages and post content relevant to your niche. Engage people who have shown interest in your niche (for example people who follow similar pages/profiles to yours)

Social media is definitely a top priority but I would also look into blogs and forums. Look at focused forums that relate to your specialty but do not spam. Spamming potential customers could be deadly.

Another source I would look at is Bing Ads. You can find $100 coupons everywhere online. While it is free for only a short period of time it will be good for you to find out what works for you. It is great learning and teaches you what keywords work and don't work.

affiliate marketing is the best way to start... you only need to find a good offer, look and add people on your fb about your market and promote that offer with a really smart way.

It seems like you already have a plan. All you will want to do now is to get started by taking massive action, and keep going until you start to make money online with affiliate marketing.

Most newbies ask many, many, many, many questions, but never take action to get started.

You might get some, but any significant amount of traffic takes either a lot of work and time or money.

FB and IG can be something worth looking into. Or you could also have a social media influencer with a large audience reach help you out.

Start with local sale groups in your area, I believe it can bring you some free traffic but it does not require you to have a great content.

As others have mentioned, social media is free and has many possibilities. Try joining niche related facebook groups, or niche related forums, then post as a genuine, helpful member with decent contributions. From time to time you may be able to direct someone to your store if they ask for it.

    Hi Newbie,

Free traffic is quality traffic and good things take time....so.....learn how to drive traffic through social and YouTube and through guest posting. Create helpful content. Connect with pros by generously helping top folks in your niche.

I suggest buying your domain and hosting now and starting a content rich wordpress dot org blog. Great source of building your expertise, establishing your authority and big time long term traffic builder too. Minimal investment as well.

Start by building a landing page with something like Leadpages. And confirm that you can get traffic there.

Once you're sure you can get traffic there, confirm you can get people to click the "Buy" button.

Once you're sure you can get traffic and get people to click the buy button, create your Shopify store.

But the biggest mistake I see entrepreneurs make, a lot, is building the castle before they build the roads to get there.

I love Shopify.. Such a great platform. Do you have a product to sell?

If you do.. Hopefully its a product you are passionate about.

Social media groups and events. A little light Paid Advertising to get the traffic flowing.. (go easy to begin with) then gain a steady following.. it will grow organically with constant passionate blog posts from you!

If you mean you are planning to start two distinct entities then I would say don't.

Choose one or the other and focus on that.

Do one thing, do it until you understand how it works and make it work for you.

Paid traffic is always going to be better than free traffic. In regards to choosing one or the other, I would start out with affiliate marketing. Once you understand how to receive traffic with affiliate marketing, getting traffic to your Shopify store should be a breeze.

Free traffic is almost always going to take a significant amount of time to see a steady flow.

But instead of trying to do two things at once, I would just focus on one until you find success.

    300,
I applaude your decission to start a Shopify store. The hardest part by far is getting that first sale. Ive tried and failed too many times to count. Ive now seen videos that say 98% of shopify stores never profit a dime. I would still be in that group if it was not for the marketing system I found. I went from zero to hero almost overnight.
Reach out and I will send some helpful links. Tom

Of course, the real question is what you are going to sell. Do you have a unique product? Is there a market for your product(s)? Do you sell something of value to potential customers?

If this is not just a learning exercise, do not create yet another Oberlo drop-shipping shop and hope that you can make money from clever marketing and content, because most likely you won't!

In terms of where to start, Shopify itself has plenty of excellent newbie resources on how to create and market your store at its 'eCommerce University'
