I am wanting to learn more about making a profit with PPC and get some general information on where I should research SEO more. I feel like Adwords is really expensive for a really good campaign. Is that the normal or is there a better option?

It depends what you're selling. If you know your average life time customer value and you can pay less than that for each customer you get, then you're in profit.
SEO is a long term plan, but using PPC can let you know the kind of search volume you can expect when you rank for those keywords.

PPC can deliver instant results and you can split test the conversion rate of your sales funnel better that way.

There are cheaper options like bing, yahoo and possibly even solo ads.
