Hi experts,

Can anyone explain me the reason why it is said that we should always emphasise on using the long tail keywords? What is the reason behind this? Im a newbie in SEO.

  • Longtail keywords are more specific, generally less competition, good traffic if you did your research right.

This means instead of having 1M search results on a broad category with lots of competition, you will have a smaller group of people, who are looking specifically for what you have and you will have less competition.

Here is the list of reasons why:
    - Lower competition
    - Higher target customers
    - Easier/Less time consuming than others

Main reason is it usually shows user intent.

If you rank for the keyword "car", there's a billion user intent possibilities.

If you rank for the keyword "car insurance for teens" it means the person doing the searching is interested in auto insurance for a teenager, not "car payments", not "car wash", not "car tires", etc...

Longtails can sometimes have less SERP competition, example, "car insurance for teenager in milwaukee" will have less competition than "car insurance for teenager".

Longtails will usually have less traffic per keyword phrase but more focused on a subject which helps segregate traffic based on the users wants/needs/intention.

The more descriptive the keyword, the more targeted the traffic is.

It would help you to get to your target audience. Note that people search using long-tail keywords. The more you research on the possible searches they do, the higher the chances you get new deals.
