How to put a value on a domain name?

Hi,
A few months ago I bought a domain name of a very popular brand. I was surprised to see it available, so I bought it in a second. The tld, however, is .me.

A few questions I have.
1. Is it illegal to sell a domain name because of it's brand value and that it's a trademark of a company?
2. If it's not illegal, how can I find out its approximate value?

I have looked at Flippa, and to sell a domain, it asks for the reserve price. I am not sure if I am entering an absurd number, which may be too high or too low.

thanks for your help.

  • The reserve price is your bottom dollar.

If there is traffic to the domain, and you can prove it, then the domain is valuable.

Also, the domain may not have any traffic, but is still valuable because it can rank well.

You can own the rights to a domain if the domain was a domain prior to the trademark.

    Example:
The Sports Authority (no longer around) had physical buildings. Around the beginning of the .com era someone asked The Sports Authority if they could start a website with their name. Since nobody shopped online, they said yes (not sure if there was a financial transaction or not).

Around 2005ish The Sports Authority wanted to buy the rights to the website and the website owner gave them some really high price and TSA decided not to purchase it.

TSA tried this over and over again, and it wasn't until 2011 when they finally purchased the domain.

    Not sure if this helps.
