Hello! My blog is basically tragic stories from my life told humorously or with a positive spin, full of lessons and morals, revolving around social and gender inequality. There are a lot of layers of these social problems I discuss such as sexuality, double standards, mental illness, and addictions.

My end goal is to compile these stories into an ebook, and gain followers who will like to read other books I'm writing.

That being said, I'm having trouble reaching my audience, and maybe it's because I'm not sure who I should be reaching and how to reach them! I'm just now learning about SEO, keywords, niches, and I'm totally overwhelmed.

How do I know what my niche is? Are there other bloggers doing similar things as me? I'm a pretty decent writer but I have very little marketing/tech experience, but I'm a quick learner! Hopefully someone here can help me!

  • So social and gender inequalities is a niche with and your subniches are sexuality, mental illness and addiction.

    I'm not sure if your books are fiction or non-fiction. However, you may want to focus on just one of those sub niches and then expand into the other two.

    You can use social media to market your products. You could start by getting involved in communities in those niches, giving your story, helping people and possibly getting them to move over to the platform you are using to promote your books.

      Thank you so much!

      I guess I'm having trouble finding "my community." Many of the blogs I'm finding about inequality are essays, where mine is more narrative. Does that matter? Is there a way to search and find blogs and social media accounts that are more like mine?

  • I feel that reading a blog that is told in first person, like yours, would attract more followers than a blog that just posts essays.

    People can connect with you, they can not connect with an essay some professor wrote 10 years ago.

    I think you need to focus on how to drive/get traffic. Maybe your current blog posts need some SEO work to rank in google.

    You are able to connect with your followers so try and figure out ways to do this.

      I have been reading about SEO, and am still a little confused about how I increase it. Do you know of any good articles I could check out that I will better understand it?

      Thanks!!

  • To get some free info about it, you can check out YouTube and even look for some free ebooks on Amazon about this topic.

    I also mentioned in my first post about becoming active and I trracting in the communities of your niche. They can be on Facebook and maybe some websites or forums.

    By you simply talking to people in there you can draw attention to yourself and when the time is right you can let people know what you do and that they can check out your blog.

    For SEO tips, look into Youtube. Niel Patel has videos that can teach you how to SEO and how to increase traffic. For this, the MOZ toolbar should be able to help, the free version should be enough.

    Hi there. For such blogs I would recommend joining blog facebook groups, where you can firstly promote yourself, and secondly, find people to collaborate with.

    You can continue to write about your above mentioned topics, but search engine optimise your posts to rank for

    * sexuality

    * double standards

    * mental illness

    * addictions

    They may be competitive keywords, so try to rank for long tail keywords which will be easier to rank on the first page of search engine search results.

    You can put links to your ebooks' sales page in your your blog posts, if you tastefully presell your books in your niche related blog post.

    Search engine optimization is a long term approach to traffic generation. Learn about pay per click (PPC) advertising. You can send targeted search engine traffic and social media traffic to your blog posts.

    Your scope is too broad.

    What does feminism have to do with addiction or mental illness? Three totally different niches.

    Focus on something, not everything.

      I was afraid of this as well...but it is the story of how I climbed the social ladder, as a poor, mentally ill, woman, and the obstacles I faced. I am also an adult entertainer and talk about my sexuality a lot. So I feel all of these things are necessary to my story as a whole.

    i would say that you need to keep writing and providing motivation + value to others. Dont over think.
    For niches just divide your blog into different sections and put them on TABS like sexuality , illness , self confidence etc . In this way you can get multiple niches on your blog as well as you can interlink them for a combines story.

    Got it?

      Thank you! I definitely have been putting a lot of effort and thought into my writing, but do not have many readers.

      I actually have categories already but they are kind of artistically said, for example instead of income inequality I say "White Trash Report" and for personal growth I say, "Wise Hoe Column" and have other tabs for mental illness, sexuality, etc. I was trying to be creative since it's about labels, humor, and a memoir.

      Is this not a good idea? Should I just say mental illness, etc..I just want to be different from what everyone else is already doing..but am I being too different as to hurt myself? Thanks again.

    I think you are in the inspirational niche. I feel you can reach readers by posting genuine comments on sites like Positively Positive and Tiny Buddha. Link into those blogs too on your blog sometimes, and tag them. Following these steps, I landed a contributor gig on Pos Pos, with its world famous contributor base.
