Is social media marketing absolutely essential for a blog's success?

Can a blog be successful purely on the merit of its content and on-page SEO efforts without the social media? They say having a definite social media strategy or not having it can make or break a blog. Are there highly successful blogs without any social media marketing strategy from their owners? Of course, we need to do everything that we could if we want to achieve success but there are people like me too who's allergic to the social media platforms. I use Facebook more as a socialising tool for my close circle of friends, colleagues and relatives, and to keep myself updated by following certain pages of my choice. I hardly use Twitter, Pinterest of Tumbler even though I have these accounts. Am I a gone-case and heading for a failure because I have not learned to be active on the social media? Just how important is social media marketing for driving traffic?

    Hey sukumarthingom,
Trust me, I know how you feel.
Actually, I use Facebook as a substitute tool of MSN today.
(Do you remember the alert tone Din Din Don?)

But I see it this way,
If you are going to travel from A -> B,
you will have more options as you grow.
Like taken by parents, by bicycle, by bus, or by plane.

Its another way to reach your goal.
When you meet a new world(learn a new social platform), slow down and take your time.
    Remember to enjoy the moment.

A thousand miles begins with a single step.
And yes, social media power to a blog is like the mental power to professor X, it connects to the whole world.
Otherwise, your blog would be like an oasis in a desert.

    Cheer up.

While not essential, per se, having a social media presence does help in driving traffic to a blog. And it's another way to engage and reach your audiences. But at the end of the day, I'd say content quality and SEO are still the biggest factors in a blog's success.

Personally I don't use my personal Facebook much anymore. I seldom check on my business page for that matter. Instead I hired this VA for cheap from the Philippines to handle most of the managing and marketing. Filipinos are awfully fond of social media, it seems. But as long as I get sales, I'm all good.

  • Social media is just another avenue to get traffic. Most people jump into it because everyone also want more traffic.

Given how fast Google is evolving, you're better off WORKING all your traffic sources.

    Seriously.

Repurpose your content into videos and peel traffic off Youtube and Vimeo.

Strip your content into questions and get traffic off Twitter.

The more traffic streams you have, the better.

Social media in general doesn't matter.

What matters is where your traffic is hanging out online.

Listen, it is not absolutely necessary but it works as a manure for faster growth. It helps you when people talk about it. Tumblr works for me...

  • As you can tell from the above comments the answer is yes, aaaaand no. If you are just starting out maintaining a blog and a social media account can be too much.

Start with a blog, get consistent at that and when you are managing the blog efficiently, than add a social media account.

You should also do your research. You may find there is not enough traffic on social media within your niche. Just something to keep in mind.

I don't know why anyone would skip social media these days. Almost everyone is doing it, chances are your competition will be doing it, so why skip out on it?
