Hi! I read your question. I have tried both drop shipping as well as affiliate marketing for the last 3 months. According to me dropshipping is much more complicated process than to start an affiliate business. You want a proper website for dropshipping whereas you can promote affiliate products even without a website. You can try out some of these affiliate websites[*]Amazon affiliate[*]Clickbank[*]Jvzoo, etc
If you want some online training i can also provide you with that

    Hi,

You're in the right place to learn about online business.

Here's some information that may help you make a decision.

    Advantages of Ecom

Compared to affiliate marketing starting an eCommerce business is more complicated, but with a good plan can have its advantages over affiliate marketing.
You can start website selling your own products and courses as well as other people's products and courses.
You don't need to be a manufacture or inventor. You can drop ship products instead of packing and shipping products yourself.

One of the best advantages of starting an ecom store instead of affiliate marketing is the freedom and control you have over pricing, acquiring repeat customers, and promoting your products.
You don't have to deal with an affiliate manager, who's controlling the price structure, crazy affiliate rules and restrictions about how you can promote products.
You can still collect information like, email, name, address, phone number, from customers who buys directly from you.

Another benefit of ecommerce over affiliate marketing is that ecom can be scaled up faster compared to affiliate marketing.
The ability to control pricing, get repeat customer, and use whatever high ROI marketing techniques you want, can result in people coming to your ecom store frequently.

You have more control over several factors that can increase business quickly with an ecom store.

You can also have affiliates sell your products!!!

    You're the boss!!!

    Disadvantages of eCom

Some of the disadvantages of ecommerce compared to affiliate marketing is that you're the boss and handle all the day to day operations of running a business. You have to set up payment processing systems, provide customer service, and deal with returns/refunds.
Depending on who types of products you chose to sell you may have to buy in bulk, store the products, and pick, pack, and ship the products.
The good thing is that technology is making it easier to do these things. Many products can be sold on your store and drop shipped to the customer by the manufacture.
Still starting and running an ecommerce store is more time consuming than affiliate marketing.

    Affiliate Marketing Advantages

Starting an affiliate marketing business is much easier compared to ecom. The main advantages are that, you don't have to have your own products. You sell other peoples products for a commission, you don't have set up payment systems, worry about customer service, packing and shipping, storing the products, sales taxes.

As an affiliate marketer you don't even need a complicated multi-page website. You can put up a simple landing page or use social media with a link to OPP (Other People's Products). When people click on your link and buys the product or service you get a commission. Commissions as high as 75-90% can earned depending on what you choose to promote.

You have marketplaces like Clickbank and JVZoo that have thousands of products to choose from.
With such an easier point of entry affiliate marketing can be a great way to start making income on the internet. The start up cost is low and you don't have a lot of day to day business operations to stay on top of.

    Disadvantages of Affiliate Marketing

Not having to set up a lot of day to day systems and having the product manufacture handle all of that stuff also comes at a price. Since you're not making the rules you have less control over how things are done.
An affiliate manager can change the commission structure, have crazy restrictions and rules about how you can promote a product, drop you as an affiliate if they feel like you violated some of the rules, or go out of business.

It might be a good idea to start out in affiliate marketing first so you can understand how to sell products online on an easier learning curve. There's no reason why you couldn't start on ecom business after a year or so of affiliate marketing.

I'm not advocating one method over the other. It ultimately comes down to what really interest you the most, what you're passionate about and your willingness to put in the work and learn about what you need to know to be successful.
    I hope this information helps.

Good luck in your online endeavors.

I'd advise against Shopify. Too many monthly costs involved to get all the tools you need, especially since it may take many months before you make any money. If you want to do e-com, set up a WordPress site and use Woocommerce instead.

But unless you have lots of time on your hands (to learn and put everything properly in place), super products, great prices and lots of traffic, don't even bother. Traffic is the biggest obstacle. Believe me - as I've set up 3 e-com stores...

Affiliate marketing IMHO is a better option. However, there is a learning curve there too. It's important to do your research, and find the right sites and mentors.

    Good luck!

There is a sub-forum about e-comm where you can get more specific help for that business model.

How techie are you? My friends who have started stores were all shocked at how complicated it all was, as Barbara has already said.

Do your research in both before you decide. But my 2 cents is that affiliate marketing is an easier choice. Other opinions will differ so make your own informed decision.

  • Snoop around on this forum, and read some threads about affiliate marketing.

Promote other peoples' products online first. If you are an affiliate of a digital product, you may earn anywhere from 50% to 100% commission for each sale you make via your affiliate link.

They would have tested their sales page and have made many sales for themselves and their affiliates. All you require is a two step funnel (use the search function on this forum and read threads about sales funnels, opt in/landing pages and autoresponders services). A Facebook advertisements linking to your opt inform on your website.

The product vendor will have created an email auto-responder sequence, that you can plugin to your auto responder, and send to your prospects that you get from your Facebook ads. You make money quicker that way while you learn the industry.

I'm going to assume, that you don't how to do what I explained above. Please first do a course on affiliate marketing, before you invest your money into advertising and autogoodies and all that fun stuff mentioned above. Check out the WSO section on this forum.

  • Depend on your passion, both have their pros and cons. The most important thing is you know how to drive targeted traffic to your great offer for sales conversion.

Both are great. Shopify is really popular these days.

Personally I still prefer affiliate marketing, but you could also consider doing both.

I recommend going with a Shopify store or just buying wholesale and selling on Amazon or Facebook as well. You could even venture into FBA.

    Hi War life!

I recommend Affiliate marketing. I started off with it years ago and made tons of money with it and never had to worry about many of the things that come with opening a store.

Also you only need to focus on two core things:

    1) Finding a product or service that you like, pays residual monthly income and that will last for a long time

    2) Marketing. Learning how to find, market and promote that product or service to your core audience.

Of course there are little mini things in both of those that you will pick up along the way, which will also help you learn how to build your own store or products.

But you'll get those along the way.

    I highly recommend affiliate marketing.

Good luck in whichever path you choose!

If you are just starting out I would definitely go with affiliate marketing, if you pick the right products you can get commissions paid out quite quickly. I would recommend going for products that pay at least 50% commissions and are medium to high ticket. If you want to make a good income faster. Of course you can also do other stuff like Amazon. But with their low commissions I think the effort outweighs the advantages unless you are selling as a seller on Amazon. Best of luck with your new business.

I've been promoting affiliate / CPA offers for over 17 years. So I'm a bit bias and obviously going to choose affiliate marketing.

One thing to consider is that there is a big world outside of MMO and straight sales offers.

I heavily promote PPL (pay per lead...lead generation) offers. This is because there is no credit card / purchase required to complete an offer. All a user has to do is fill out a form, so conversion rates are typically much higher compared to offers that require a sale to be made.

I favor offers that have a make, get or save money benefit to them, as they have overall worked the best. They also tend to have the greatest mass appeal (will be of interest to a large general audience), so the potential exists to produce high volume and they are fairly easy to cross promote on the back-end.

Some of the verticals (niches) I have done extremely well with are: education, insurance, loans, debt, credit, mortgage, assistance, discount offers, homeowner offers, etc...

The bulk of the PPL offers that I promote pay $20-$40 per lead, but I also promote offers that pay more and less. You don't want to get too caught up on what an offer pays because how well it converts is just as important. For example, if you have an offer that pays $9, but if it converts at 2X or more of a $20 offer, then it will perform about the same or possibly better. At the same time, if you have an offer that pays $90 and it converts poorly, it may not even be worth promoting.

I have also done just as good with dating website sign-ups and pretty good with free trial + S/H offers. I also promote a very limited number of offers that are straight sales offers. However, mass appeal needs to exist and I also look for one of the following...

    1) The product is new and/or novel-unique and you can't purchase it locally or even something similar. I don't waste my time with it once it or something similar shows up in Walmart.

    2) The buyer can truly get what is being offered at a decent discount.

    3) Solves a house is on fire type problem.

However, most of the above I will promote on the back-end. Which is why the first thing I look for is mass appeal.

Bottom line, it's far easier to get someone fill out a short form than to get them to pull out their credit card and make a purchase. So why struggle with trying to sell this or that, when you can provide free information that users want/need and get paid well doing it.

    Something to think about

i recommend afflaite marketing as well. but you have to do it right and build a list and market to that list. do not waste your time with anything else.
example: if you run fb ads or bing ads: run them to you landing page first so you can collect their email and then to product page.

  • I would personally start with affiliate marketing. I think it requires less money to invest and there are many great products to promote with a decent return. If you can learn how to market affiliate products than you can promote anything.

  • If you have some start-up capital then I'd say go straight for drop shipping if not use affiliate marketing to get that then transition.

Unfortunately it looks to me like you think it has to be either affiliate marketing or shopify.

There are as many ways to make money online as there are pebbles on the beach.

I'm sure the world hasn't changed that much in the time I've been making my living online and I have never sold an affiliate product or used shopify. You really should do some more research so that you understand some more ways to get started.

Also understand, your thinking is the same as every other newcomer. You become the feeding ground for every how to make money info product on here. Do more research before you dive in.

    For example:

    Create your own info products

Create a go to membership site for a subject you know a lot about

Provide a service that you're good at

Help others how to do this kind of reserach

    The list is almost endless

    Keep researching
