Should I just keep my day job?

Hi I've been trying this affiliate marketing because I need extra income.. I sell filters now over the phone. It barely pays the bills with twin girls and one computer I don't have a lot of spare time or money.

My question, can a new person still make money say writing reviews and make affiliate sales? It sounds easy from everything I've read so far and it's actually helping people make good decisions which is a nice plus.

Also, I'm trying to find a hosting platform that I can afford. Everyone wants all of it up front. I'm a divorced mom with two kids, it has to be cheap to start.

Or am I wasting my time and money trying to do this? It seems so competitive like everyone's doing it.

Anyway sorry don't mean to sound negative, just want to get going on this or something that I can work hard on and grow into something more than my current low paying job. Thanks!

These are tough questions. Of course everyone will encourage you to stick with it. The general consensus around here is you don't encourage people to do that, you are committing a mortal sin. Forget the potential for tragic consequences. It's not their life. What does it matter??? :-(

Your situation places you in a real conundrum.

That said, you are a single mom with 2 kids. The more you can invest in something, theoretically, the easier and faster it should be to achieve even a modicum of success. Unfortunately, it doesn't always turn out that way and you don't seem to be in a position to do that, regardless.

If it were me, I'd keep working while I looked for a better job. Once I had done that I would try to put something away so that when I do strike out on my next venture, I could at least afford the bare essentials to play the game.

I'd also think long and hard about the type of project I'd want to devote my time and money to. Personally, I'd never choose what you are doing, but some people say there's nothing better.

I can't do much to help you, but - if you are operating on the WordPress platform, I'd be happy to give you one year of free, managed WordPress hosting.

I have absolutely no experience or knowledge in your area, so that's the most I can offer you. You should NOT infer from my offer that I am telling you that you should soldier on. I'm not. But I learned long ago that you can't tell anyone, anything and that in the end, they are just going to do what they want, regardless of what the most prudent course of action, might be. People be crazy!

Please think long and hard. You may think that your situation can't get any worse than it is. Trust me. You couldn't be more wrong.

PM me, if you need me to hook you up with hosting.

    Cheers.

P.S. Just realized you need 5 posts to PM. I can be reached at: optedin[at]fastmail[dot]com.

I totally understand where your coming from. I posted something similar in another forum. People will say that it's easy, and I'm sure it is for people that have "disposable income" but for folks such as you and myself, it's damn hard.
I'm in the process of doing all I can with what I have and try and make it work.

Keep your day job but look to find one that pays money. Joined linkedin make sure your profile has your skills in it. Also take Optin's offer you can not beat that. He can be very helpful.. Just remember your family comes first. There will always be a time for affiliate marketing. Wish I could be more helpful than this.

Hey, I will say you to keep your day job.
It's really hard to earn money as a newbie.
So at first properly learn about online marketing/income.
    Step by step go ahead.
After a while you can take your decision yourself.
When you Will be getting your income from online then compare with your day income if you feel that you should give emphasis on your online business then only then stop your day job.

    Otherwise you should continue both...
    Thanks

I would recommend keeping your job until you start making more money through Internet Marketing. You should also look into Selling on Ebay and Amazon.

Hey, do you think eBay/ Amazon is better than affiliate marketing?

I really like this advice! What do you mean domain name related to reviews?

Great advice, investing in yourself is the best investment we can make... by far!!

So Affiliate marketing is selling other people's stuff

      Is e-commerce eBay and Amazon?

      What is copy writing?

Are there more online business methods?

Sorry if these questions are dumb

Hey so what is an SBI site?

If I use the $2.95 a month offer with bluehost would I also need separate hosting? I presumed this was included cos of the name but with the prices you say above this sounds very cheap??

      Thanks for you comment

That's amazing Ryan!! Such a great reply, I wonder how many people go into business "trying" because they "need" something.

But if a lightbulb moment there for me...

It's really hard though isn't it to narrow down your focus and decide what "it" is that we should do.

I'm going to look your ebook up now.

Can I just ask what it is you do?

      Thanks

I went straight for the book Ryan, just slim read it and thanks for providing the info!

I definitely haven't niched down enough and I've always been aware of this.

I really enjoy self development (similar to what you suggested above and in the book) and my motto has always been changing health, success and happiness for the better.

Which I guess is another way of saying "I'm covering a bit of everything!!" Which as you point out nobody wants... you lose followers by deviating, and I have been deliberalty deviating for my whole blogging life!!

Thanks again for the book. I know what I need to focus on finding out (my niche niche niche). I'm sure next time you hear from me I will have it (but don't expect this any time soon!!!)

Interesting question. For me, keep your job if it gives regular income for your daily needs. If you have already established your side job, that's the time you can leave your regular job.

You see, it's more of the stability versus toxicity. Patience is a talent.

Definitely keep your day job, it's too tough online now and the easy money has been made.

I still build sites and stuff but it's more of a hobby now rather than a "job".

Actually doing this as a hobby could be the key to actually making money. I started a forum this year just for fun and it's growing really rapidly. Because it's something I'm actively involved in doing, it's so easy to keep it topped up with interesting content.

    FOLLOW THIS:

Keep your day job. It helps you pay the bills till you make it in affiliate marketing. There is still a lot of potential in affiliate marketing. You don't have to spend much for earning some money. Take up OptedIn's hosting offer. Or else, there is Hostgator and Dreamhost. Both offers shared hosting on monthly plans that are very cheap. Get a domain name related to reviews

First, start a review style blog and promote your affiliate offers/products by writing reviews of those products. Place your affiliate link in the review

Second, create a Youtube channel. Do the same reviews here but with videos. Put your affiliate link in the description and add a link your review post on your website. Promote video with SEO. Learn how to do video SEO

Do both these things for every product you promote. You will see the cash starts rolling in

The OP needs realistic information that can benefit her in some way. Presenting your option as a guarantee for success, doesn't meet that goal.

The last thing she needs at the moment is, "rah-rah, shish-koom-bah."

    Hi Filterqueen,

I'm going to agree the other replies to your question and say, keep your day job. You have responsibilities to take of. You don't want to put yourself and more importantly your children in a bad financial situation. Take your time and build your business on the side.
Now is the time to do research and figure out where you want to start your online business journey. Pick an area like affiliate marketing, e-commerce, copywriting, etc... and see if they're a fit for you. Eventually you will need a combination of skills to be successful but pick one to start and build up slowly.
I also advise you to start a personal development program too. Many times people start a business after being an employee for many years and don't realize what made them a good employee doesn't necessarily transfer over to being a good business owner. You don't get a paycheck every two weeks just for showing up when you have a business. This reality can be very traumatizing for some people when they have put in a lot of effort starting their business and they don't get a paycheck.
Read and listen to motivational, educational, entrepreneurial material that gives you a true picture of what being an entrepreneur is like. One of the people I personally like to read and listen to is Robert Kiyosaki, he will tell you straight up that you better expect to fail at this more than once but that you can also comeback from the failures, learn and do better. There many other great people to read and listen to that can help you prepare for what you will encounter.
Continue to engage in the Warrior Forum and learn.

    You can do it!!!

    Enjoy your outcome.

Yes, l agree with everyone else, keep the day job for as long as is possible, as being a newbie online is difficult initially, or nothing much happens for months or even years.

I am not trying to put you off, Mothers creating a Blog on something to do with babys seems to be a hit, but like anything online we only hear about the easy successes not the failures.

If you want some extra money with little risk then Fiverr is the way to go, well that and selling anything valuable on Ebay.

Tried both, and yeah, Fiverr is more pocket money with quite a lot of effort, but the money is there, (l can give you some more info, if interested, free of course).

An SBI site is great if you want to be lead by the hand and do an entire site by yourself, but if you want a much cheaper option, without the private online forum and tons of learning material then Hostgator or possibly Bluehost is the way to go.

And an SBI site has about a 13% chance of succeeding, (their figures) or making $300 or more per month.

And their $30 a month if it doesn't is a fair slog per month, but Hostgator is $10 for up to 10 sites, (month) although the domain name reg, also needs to be considered, although a lot cheaper.

Creating an off the shelf site is relatively easy, (SBI is very easy) and creating a custom site, much harder, but it looks more professional.

Hi I've been trying this affiliate marketing because I [B]need[/Bextra income.

FQ, the answer is in your first sentence

This is so tough to swallow for us mere mortals at first - I fought it like mad - but owning your fear-driver, your desperation and your frustration, and understanding that your heavy fear energy driving all you do affiliate wise will result in permanent failure until you feel and release this heavy fear vibe, well, this makes the difference.

Trying is giving it s shot. Like trying food for the first time, or trying food again here and there. Not a 100% intelligent, abundant, generous decision and vibe, just an attempt filled with fear. Which mindset wise has gotta go. Feel the fear and release to clean your slate.

Need is heavy attachment to outcomes, addiction to outcomes, desperation and dripping with fear. I sat in the same shoes for long, for like, forever it seems. Sucks. I know. But until you feel fears of losing all money and needing more money you will do the exact things with the specific, fear-energy ensuring your failure, affiliate wise, guaranteeing you need da 9-5.

Find a quiet room. Grab a pillow. Cry into it, punch it, whatever ya gotta do. If you see the smiling guy living in the tropics or in NYC now in my avatar, he operates from a loving energy and dives into fears and serves folks with little expectation because of these fear-clearing sessions in quiet rooms. 100% success rate for those who feel fear and it gets easy after a while. Then you see clearly, follow sound advice patiently, and you eventually leave your job, doing simple things from detached, abundant, generous, persistent energies.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, I didn't expect that, how awesome!

This is a general reply to the reply posts..

I make $8 an hour with commission I sometimes clear $300 in a week. I used to average $1000 a week at another sales job but I had to move here where I am and there's nothing here really. Everything is so saturated.

This is why I'm looking online for a good foot hold. I'll be honest I cried my butt off last night after reading all the comments. But I need to hear the truth and for that I'm grateful, so thank you again, everyone.

I've looked into all the usual places, Fiverr, eBay, Amazon, clickbank, Etsy, etc. I chose the affiliate option since I don't have a product, yet anyway.

The person that called me out on the fesr energy.. he's right. Generally I can take just about anything that comes my way.. I've had to take care of myself most of my life.. anxiety is a part of me and my life.. but it does keep me motivated to keep trying! Otherwise I'm a passionate loving kinda person that's in love with life itself!

If there's a way I can do it, I'll figure it out.

      Hello Filterqueen,

Thank you for sharing your story with everybody here. I think your thread should serve as a good example of a journey one has to go through on the road to success.

I am sure that a lot of people coming to sites like a warrior forum imagine that success is often achieved overnight. Some may acknowledge the fact that a person has to work hard in order to succeed.

But rarely does anybody fully comprehend how tough it often is. Your thread gives us a glimpse of what tough really means but I am sure how we imagine it is nowhere near how you experience it.

I want to share my story that took me from having absolutely no knowledge in digital marketing to successfully starting and growing a digital marketing company. I hope that you can have a glimpse into what it took for me to get where I wanted to get.

I think I started with similar ambitions, I wanted to learn digital marketing in order to create a secondary income to my primary career. At that time I was starting last semester of nursing school.

My wife (girlfriend at the time) sat me down one day and told me that she is pregnant. You can imagine how quickly my world turned upside down.

After a few days of watching how my life is reshuffling in front of my eyes, I decided that nursing job won't pay for a life that I wanted to provide for my family. It was then that I decided to find a better way to make money. After some research, I settled on SEO.

I spent the next year, or until the birth of my daughter, sometimes sleeping 3-4 hours per night, working full time as a nurse and trying to learn as much as I can about SEO.

About a month after my daughter was born I officially opened my SEO agency.

The next 3 years, however, were a blur of failures and disappointments.

You see, I was continuing to grow my understanding of SEO throughout this time, but because I felt like I wasn't succeeding as fast as I imagined I would, I pursued other online ventures. I ended up disappointing myself even more.

What made that sense of failure and disappointment worse is me constantly thinking that I cannot provide my daughter with the life I wanted her to have. Don't get me wrong, we were not starving or anything, but we definitely lived from paycheck to paycheck.

Things slowly started to change about a year ago when I finally got my first client. One turned into two, and two into three. Fast forward today I can proudly say that I can give my family anything they need and then some.

I thought SEO will allow me to start making some side income within a few months but it took me 3 years to see any profit. The amount of money I spent experimenting with SEO, buying online courses and software, etc. would probably shock me if I saw the total number.

Recently I read a quote that I should have read all those years ago. It said: "Don't compare your chapter 2 to somebody else's chapter 20".

Avoid reading comments on this forum or anywhere else for this matter and think that you can do the same thing if you apply what they tell you. They went through much more, made more mistakes and gained more understanding on the topic.

What I want you, Filterqueen, to take away from this is persistence. If you feel passionate about affiliate sales then stick to it and continue doing so as long as it takes.

The more learn, the more you earn, as Warren Buffet used to say. Continue pushing through and learning more about what you are passionate about.

Don't think about how hard it is to do it while being a mom of two and job that hardly pays the bills. That will only make things harder. Think about where you want to be a year or 5 years from now and let that motivate you.

Afterall, you are not doing it for yourself.

You are taking this pain right now so that your children don't have to.

      I hope this helps.

The others have solid advice. You should keep the day job. But keep working on your online career. It's tough work, especially since you also have kids to take care of and you're still starting out. Reminds me of someone from the Philippines I'd often hire for VA work. Hard working lady After a few jobs and some small talk, I found out she was a widow with 2 kids and not much support from her family. Must be a rough life.

Time, patience, hard work. You can get through this.

    1) You are not wasting time.
    2) Yes, like any other thing this also is very competitive.
    3) Don't even think of giving up your day job till you start making good money online.
    4) Writing review etc. can make you money if it is backed up by sound strategy which again may cost some money. Just writing reviews will not take you anywhere.

My first thought after reading this post is why not try to sell "filters" online? If you are doing it on the phone you must know quite a it about that product. Are these type of filters available on Amazon? build a simple website and write up an awesome product review on filters. Is it water filters? Then go anywhere and everywhere online wher people may mention or be interested in your product. Just a thought.

I would definitely keep your day job until you are making at least twice your day job income with affiliate marketing AND you have six months worth of living expenses saved up.

I've tried many online business models. Some I failed with. Others I made great money with. Of all the things I've tried, selling on eBay was the one with the quickest and largest profits. Of course, that's just my experience.

If you're looking for more immediate income while you learn and master affiliate marketing, you could do work on sites such as Upwork, sell on eBay, write articles, or many other things that pay you immediate money.

Affiliate marketing is a great business model, but it does take time to master the skills you need to succeed. Keep your big goal in front of you at all times, but keep the bills paid while you do that. Just my two cents.

    One last thing.

I don't tell a lot of people this, but of all the things I've sold online, the best margins I've ever had was with used clothing.

My wife and I can buy garbage bags full of used clothes for $3 to $5 at many different thrift stores, and sell these items for 20 to 50x markups.

I specialized in electronics and belt buckles and antiques for many years, but nothing has been as good as selling used clothing online.

Keep the faith. Keep learning. And, good luck on your journey.

My sister is selling used clothing (mainly coats and mens' shirts) and shoes on eBay and is crushing it. Shoes, by far are her highest profit margin items. She goes out two days per week to the Salvation Army and Goodwill thrift shops and the occasional church or community yard sale. You have to develop some knowledge about what you are looking it. Last week she picked-up a pair of women's Italian leather boots that retailed for $395, for $10. All they needed was a good polishing. She got $165 for them. This was not the only great find that she has made a ton on.

She's happy as a clam and I'm thinking about getting her to teach me the ropes. lol

She knows the ins and outs of successfully selling on eBay so well, (doing it successfully on a large scale IS a science) that I keep trying to get her to write an eBook. She tells me she's too busy making money from other people's crap. How do you argue with that?

She's had her failures, though. Vintage jewelry was "a bust," as she tells it.

If I were starting over, it give it a shot.

We have many different good incomes streams, but eBay has been the most consistent for almost 15 years. More importantly, there is a short learning curve. And there is one thing eBay has that most of us do NOT have: millions of hungry buyers.

Trying to build your own audience is time consuming and expensive. If you can't do that, take your products or services to a place like eBay that already has the buyers.

That makes a lot of sense.. a platform with buyers seeking out various items. It makes more sense then building a site and developing targeted traffic to it. At least to start off with.

Thank you for sharing this! I have a lot of used and new never worn items like jackets and shoes. I'll post them on my day off. I realize there's more to it then just posting items but this gives me hope and right now that's everything.

I agree with what most people have already said, you absolutely need to keep your current JOB as you have a family to support.

The affiliate route is competitive and it is saturated. So the key is to choose a good affiliate program or product and put your own twist on it.

For physical products, you could shoot videos of how they work, unboxing them etc and then link to them via your Amazon affiliate link. If you don't have the products, you could shoot a video with photos or screen captures of them.

For digital products, don't try and promote dozens of things. Focus on one or two evergreen products/companies. Again, it always helps if you actually have the products. It will show in how you market them. You can speak with authority and know what you are talking about.

Main thing is to be real and connect with your audience. People buy from people, not necessarily because they desperately need the product but because someone they trust is recommending they get it.

My advice would be an affiliate product + Youtube videos. All that costs is your time, so try and fit it in where possible.

You should always keep a job on your plate, even if I started making $100k month, I would still keep my $100k/yr job. You always need to keep some type of security in your back pocket, and if that means keeping a job, then so be it, and you are right, running any type of business online is a risk, and to boot competitive also, so unless you have come up with some invention that will make you a millionaire overnight, then expect that it will take alot of time to get your affiliate business off the ground, and it will take money also. Dont think you are going to setup a site, throw a couple dollars at it, and you are off and running, it simply does not work that way anymore. You need a quality site, regular content, high-quality backlinks which can be costly, and a whole lot of time.

no sugar coating, getting a business/site off the ground these days will be tough, and that is why most people that try will fail, and only a fraction of them will ever make it or ever see a return/profit.

and whoever said it would be easy plain out lied to you.
it may be easy to those that have the right skill sets....

Nothing worth accomplishing is fast, free or easy. I've done online stuff for about 10 years and done very well, and the more I do it, the more I love offline stuff, like direct mail. I'm actually thinking about selling off my websites at some point and just selling stuff through direct mail. It's pretty much a competition free zone compared to direct mail.

Thrift-to-ebay makes a lot of sense for someone in your situation. I'm not an expert on ebay - but I am well versed in thrift shops.

Look for thrift shops near high income areas - worth driving to nearby towns to do that. People who spend a lot of money on clothes and shoes often donate them as a write-off. You will find a LOT of stuff with original price tags on them.

If you google 'how to sell thrift on ebay' you'll find a lot of good - free - info. It's a booming business. Great idea for you - and your kids can be included. That's a big plus for a single mom with limited free time.

Even ebay helps out with this sort of business:

We do the best with non chain type thrift stores. I prefer the off the trail church ones. You can talk to their manager and work out a deal with them. We get first dibs at many thrift stores, before things hit the racks, because we have prearranged relationships with them. It's a win-win for them and us, because we buy volume. Just food for thought.

Salvation Army and Goodwill are WAY too expensive, generally speaking. Yes, they still have some deals, but you need to shop around and educate yourself about which thrift stores have the best deals on each type of item.

I would also tell people to specialize if you can. That will shorten your learning curve and you can dominate in a quicker amount of time.

    An ebay trick:

So you are in a thrift store or where ever.. you find an item.. you THINK may be worth something on ebay... bust out your phone and do a search for the item on ebay. THE TRICK is to then click on "Advanced Search" and then tick " Sold Listings" this then gives you an idea of what the item is ACTUALLY selling for and HOW OFTEN. It kinda takes the guess work out of wondering if an item will sell.

My wife does 6 figures a year on Ebay... she gets payed to shop.. it really does not get much better. For the most part she DOES NOT frequent thrift shops. She goes to the Clearance section of Walmart, and other stores like Home Depot, advanced auto.... It is silly what they close out and for what price.

I think the best one that I can recall was xbox wireless headsets a few weeks before Christmas a few years back... she bought like 30 of them for $5.00 each and they were sold within 12 hours for I believe $30 or $40 each

Whats interesting about this is a proper title and good description content wins the day. We used to sell RF Modulators ( I would buy a pallet at a time ), and accounted for 33% of the sales each day ( on average 12 would sell a day, so we were selling 4 a day literally every day for over 2 years ) by running 2 ads.. one was with FREE shipping and the other ended up being the exact same price but shipping was extra

When you start doing this keep in mind the expense associated with doing this.. Packing tape costs money... if you have to buy boxes.. they cost money.

We try as much as possible to use the flat rate boxes from the Post office ( https://store.usps.com/store/results...uestid=2416461 )

There is no need for tape ( to close the box ) and you obviously do not have to buy a box. You can actually order them online and they deliver them to your door. A tip here, if you look at the link above look for the Regional Rate boxes. They are considerably less than say the medium boxes.

        Best of Luck!

We buy all of our packing supplies on eBay. It is about 70% cheaper than buying them at Wal-mart, office stores, or online vendors. We get our tape, boxes, etc. online. When we can we use the Flat Rate shipping. With the clothes, since most of them are light, we use plastic envelopes and ship first class. We do not do free shipping with anything. We make the buyer pay and we sell a ton of stuff every single day.

So the only thing left out is learn, do and teach. You learn, you implement and then you teach to other newcomers who will be looking to solve their problem with "making money online". A tried and tested model that is guaranteed to succeed in years to come.
Selling on eBay does take some specialized knowledge, but it isn't all that difficult. If you know anyone in your local area who is really good at it, offer to take them out to lunch and pick their brain for a few hours. Or, ask if they will come over and help you for half a day, and barter with them to pay for their time. It will be time and money well spent. I wish I would have had a mentor when I first started selling online. It's much better than having to figure everything out on your own.

Plus, if you have a little extra time, you can check out the eBay forums. The eBay community is amazing. Combine that with all the tutorial videos on YouTube and you should be set.

Yes, there are lots of sellers, but there are also lots of grocery stores, and they all seem to do pretty well. If you have something in high demand, even if there are lots of sellers, you can do quite well. I personally think specializing on eBay is the best way to go, where you focus on one niche.

And I'll close with this. Not everyone on eBay price shops. Many of our items are priced higher than our competition online. We never do free shipping and most of our competition does. It doesn't matter. If you have something good, with a knock out description and great photos, combined with a Power Seller reputation, the sky is the limit. Just my two cents.

That's simply not true. I know too many people who earn money on ebay and amazon - and they have nothing all that special. They have some knowledge about a particular product/niche - or good taste - or the ability to recognize a 'deal' when they find it.

My younger son supported his family when his business closed during the recession....buying old pinball machines, repairing them and selling them for 5x (or more) what he paid for them. He bought old audio equipment ( he knows what is valuable) at yard and estate sales and resold it for great profits on ebay. He's not an ebay expert....once the economy improved and he was back at work in his field, he dropped the ebay altogether.

Nothing worthwhile is easy or guaranteed - the only guarantee is if you never try, you'll never know what you could have done.

Getting into the bandwagon because it is what everyone else is doing at the moment doesn't guarantee the same results for the rest of the group. Some may succeed in it while others may not. You may get your hands on all the materials you need in order to get started but it would take your time and a whole lot of skills learning. I don't want to sound negative here but keep your day job and learn things on the side that you can make money out of. Everything will always start out small and eventually grow big so be patient.

never quit your job. you cant trust making money online.

dont believe the hype. the majority of affiliates or internet marketers lie and deceive people and thats how they make money online. basically they have mastered the art of lying and deceiving people.

if you need more money then you need to up-skill yourself and find a better paying job.

If money is an issue to you, my advice is to keep your day job.

The only question after working, do you still have time and energy to focus on your online business besides your kids?

Can you arrange with your boss to work part-time instead of full-time so that you have more time and energy on those?

Yes, the pay may be lesser but your time and energy is just as important to enable you to stay focused and do what is necessary.

As for hosting platform, I will recommend Hostgator or Bluehost in which you can install Wordpress within your control panel.

As to how to go about doing that, you can research and find those in Youtube videos which are many.

Or you can try Google Blogger which is how I got started 10 years ago. It is free but its features are limited and you do not have total ownership of that blog even if you bought a domain name with it.

As to how to get visitors, you can do blog commenting, forum and Facebook groups posting if you have Facebook account.

The good news is that you are motivated to earn extra income. Being motivated can give you a drive so that you would keep at it. This is a formula for success. What helped me earn extra income was turning my busy time into a product. My daughter plays basketball, and I spent a lot of time traveling for her games. I started sending out content about what it's like supporting your child in sports and was able to sell some of my content for $$$. A suggestion is that if you are doing digital marketing, pick something related to what you are spending time doing already, like how to does a single mom raise twin girls products or content or videos. This way you can integrate what you are already doing with an opportunity for additional income. Take care.

If you are reviewing stuff and promoting affiliate offers, you can do that on YouTube without having to have a website.

Just do a video review and put the link under the video. That also makes it naturally searchable in YouTube Search and Google Search.

Definitely keep the day job. You should never leave your day job unless you have the finances to support yourself for a while on savings. Which it does not sound like you do. For now keep working at you online "side hustle". If you start making enough money from it you will know if you can afford to lose the day job.

Well, I can only speak from my own experiences, including past mistakes, having raised 3 kids as a single parent.

You must have a system mapped out to pursue it. Resources are short. Don't waste time and energy into spinning your wheels.

You can pay for knowledge that gets you results. This can be an investment if you know what exactly your end goal is with IM, and how you want to achieve it. If you don't yet know, it's a must.

Know that there are basic components of internet marketing, and look for the training/mentorship that teaches them. Avoid the cash-draining shiny objects that promise instant and unrealistic returns.

But no, until you are replacing your current income online, I wouldn't think about quitting a day job that puts food on the table. Work at IM like it's night school or a second job (it's sort of both, as you learn and start to apply) while you continue to take care of the.kids.

And in the midst of all that, there's no harm in looking for a better job, too. Once I was able to get into jobs that were not traditional positions where I was stuck in an office from 9-5, it really helped my internet marketing - giving me more time to pursue it, and a better confidence that I could excel without being chained to a desk for 8 hours a day.

You need to build rappor with the people. In order to build rappor you must demonstrate that you can deliver value consistently by solving their issues. I wouldn't focus solely on the money but focus more on customer service i.e customer needs. You can only get the money afrer you provide a solution. So become an expert in your area, learn as much as you can be genuine

  • Affiliate marketing just takes time, and I believe it is still currently a profitable way to make money. It is possible to start having sales early, but that is not the norm. If you are trying to keep costs down you can use YouTube to promote your products. This way you don't need hosting. It will always be more profitable to have a website, but it's not necessary starting out. Just keep posting reviews, and mix in some other helpful videos as well.

It is definitely possible to make money with affiliate marketing. Many are doing this, including me. But I disagree about posting - IMO you should always get your own hosting and website.

    Hi Filterqueen,
"can a new person still make money say writing reviews and make affiliate sales?"

Sure you can. There are a few good affiliate marketing platform specifically focuses on training you to create a "niche" site for product reviews as a way to "helping people make good decisions which is a nice plus" and at the same time earn the income paid to you for your effort. Look for "best affiliate programs with residual income". I'm sure you will find a platform that can help you succeed with writing product reviews for a living. I hope that helps

I won't read through all of the feedback which I'm sure has some good points.

To keep it very simple though..

How much do you trust yourself and is your back against the wall enough for you to just say F it, I'm going to take action no matter what that means and I will not let failing stop me until I make it a success for myself?

If you can clearly answer this question, than you will have your answer.

Nothing comes easy and anything that is ultimately worth it will never come without failure and persistence of hard work.

So if you're absolutely sick and tired of the low paying job and know that you have kids to feed and you're barely making it - don't let that stop you from taking a chance if this is what you really want to do (become an entrepreneur).

Use that emotion to light a fire in you that you've never seen before.

You need to 10X your efforts in ways you didn't think you could or had in you.

If that means selling some shit from home to purchase an affiliate marketing seminar ticket and flight to learn something that'll benefit your business, you damn well do it.

Every little bit you can manage to dump in to self investment is a win situation as long as you take action and set out to do what you plan to do.

    Don't let fear stop you.

You need to look yourself in the mirror, ask the question I stated above, and realize that as mama bear, you would never do anything that would put those cubs in harms way.

As a mom, you will always find a way to feed and take care of your family. That is in your DNA.

For the past 8 years I've been wanting to set out on my own path and always let fear stop me or never had the answer to the BIG question "What should I pursue, what kind of business?"

I'm here now, stuck in the same position after working my current career for the last 11 years and finally have been setting forth towards my dream.

I'm sick and tired of being sick an tired. I work paycheck to paycheck and tough to stay above water, but investing in myself- I cannot lose.

Only you can make the decision.

It's not about the competition or any other fear you have.

It's about are you willing to stand out on the ledge of the tallest building and know that if you fall you will catch yourself and get better.

Focus on the VALUE that YOU can give to others and competition won't matter.

    Good luck in your decision.

She can do it partime, so telling her not to do it flat out is poor advice.

I work full time and am working on my business partime.

That's how majority of people start out.

It's very rare a person will just up and leave their only income to start a venture full time without any experience or something to fall back on.

      To the OP-

Trying and failing a bunch of times holds more value than not doing anything at all.

Not trying is where regret is born and the longer time goes on, the more you'll ask yourself what if...

Devote even as little as 1-2 hours per day to a business partime and you'll see it grow if you put focused attention to it.

Each day I wake up 3 hours before needing to be at work. I work on my craft for an hour after getting ready for the day.

When I get home at 8:30 pm, I eat dinner and work on my craft another 1-2 hours before going to bed.

5 days a week that's 15 hours dedicated to my business.

Weekend time can be unlimited. Easily make it what you want and can do.

Anyone telling you don't do it imo is wrong.

There are multi millionaires that started from far less than what you have, didn't have a clue or the knowledge they have today.

      Not even close.

They tapped in to something within themselves and kept fighting no matter how many times they failed.

If you're not failing, you're not succeeding because you're simply not doing anything period.

Yes, it taps a nerve when people tell others not to do something.

That's how dreams are robbed from those who are fearful, doubtful, or just feel lost on how to get started.

Btw OP - if you do get in to affiliate marketing, you can also be on for big stores such as Walmart or amazon etc...

So if that maybe helps you out or makes it less intimidating, use the big brand names to your advantage.

There's so many products and services that offer affiliate opportunities now days it's endless with what you can get in to.

      Marketing is simple concept.

Know your market, know what you have to offer, reveal your typical customer, expose their needs, present offer.

Think.. not all TV commercials apply to everyone, but they are presented in a way knowing that those who they are for will see them.

The internet is that very space.

Write something valuable, tell a personal story, make connections and throw a link.

      Don't over complicate it.

A way to spend hardly anything..

      Use clickbank market place.

Sign up, pick a niche, see the products and filter them by "gravity". You will see products with the highest payout and what the avg price ppl are spending.

      Grab a link and promote.

They even give tutorials getting started.

Research to get started but don't get stuck in to doing just that.

      Take action.

Such a good thread with so many useful comments. In particular two comments summed up a couple of very important points, once about fear and approaching this from position os scarcity and the other by tomopalinski, which is so spot on about the reality of making money online.

As for what I can add: I also needed an extra income to keep things moving forward with a pregnant wife. I had already left my job and stated an online business but wan't making me enough money yet and saving was diminishing.

Lesson 1: like tomopalinski said, it always takes longer then you think and results only come if you really commit for the longer term and stick with it. There is no easy money online and the programs or courses that say that is best to stay away from them as they are not genuine.

I also tried dropshipping for a few months and burnt a couple of thousands on ads and courses to figure it out. I started selling some products on dropshipping but then luckily came across a mentor and a program that changed it all for me.

I no longer need to worry about all those upfront investments as now I have equipped myself with a high income skill that three months on has starting to earn me money and I know will get me to my income goal and the lifestyle I desire in the next year. The best about this is also I get to talk to people and help them in their transformation journey which is more full-filling.

Filterqueen, you sound like a hard working and determined lady and I am sure you fill figure it out.

The answer is simple: DON'T GET MESS !

Newbies try to get mess with a lot of things online, pay services, coaching, hostings etc.. it's a matter of trial and error and then finally succeed or give up.

You don't need this. At least, you have 2 kids, so not much money to waste.

You don't need an hosting in the first instance.

You need an autoresponder. Better one with an opt in page pre-build to choose.

Choose getresponse or sendlane for starting. it has a trial period.

Choose a niche, products to sell as an affiliate, and deliver traffic to the opt in page using some free method like forum commenting, posting to social etc.

Re-invest the compoundings of the earning (at least the thank u page offer) to solo ads traffic in your niche.

    Hi Filterqueen:

I would definitely say keep your day job. I had to go through the transition period of changing from a steady paying job to doing business with un-predictable income, so I can identify with the decision you are trying to make. It would have definitely been easier financially if I kept my job full time and worked the business part time. I would recommend that you keep your day job, and give the online/affiliate work 2 hours per day if possible so you can grow online, and when you get to the point that the online income meets or surpasses your day job income, then I would say do the transition. Hope this helps.

There are many hundreds of posts to be found on this topic by learning to utilize the 'search' function. Read, learn and then return (by starting your own thread) to ask specific questions.

No one wants to tutor someone who hasn't applied themselves to at least do their own basic research - unless you would like to pay them.

    I can certainly relate...

Its never easy in the beginning. the problem is most "gurus" out their make it sound so easy just so you can buy one thing or the other..what most fail to share is the frustrations and time/money lost.

The fact remains that there is a ton of money to be made online, however it requires a lot of time and work to get to where you can quit your job...anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a dream

That being said, I would not advice you to quit your job, those kids depend on you and you need a "sure thing" to be able to continue providing for them, however keep saving up as much as you can, its not easy but I promise you if you can find a way to free yourself from the shackles of 9-5 your kids will love you for it. this might mean sacrificing movie nights or any non crucial expenses so you can afford to invest in your business.

Namecheap has some super cheap hosting options. their share hosting packages start at $2.88 per month and they have an amazing customer service. check them out.

I truly hope this helped you in some way, keep at it...this might not be the right time but don't give up.

You might want to keep the day job and look first for a better paying less demanding job in your situation. Then when you have a job that gives you time to pursue Internet Marketing you can do it part-time; at least until it is making more than a regular job.

It won't be easy, Internet Marketing is not for the faint of heart and can require twice the work of a regular job making less than a regular job unless you capture lightning in a bottle, which is all of our aims. Don't want to sound negative, it's just that your situation as you know makes it difficult to jump straight into the deep side of the pool. Good luck!

Don't quit your job. It provides a stable baseline for you and your family.

Don't think affiliate marketing is easy, or any other type of online business.
People tell you it's easy so you buy their courses or signup for their newsletter or something else.

Don't quit your job or another better job you may get before you are getting regular high payouts and understand that even if you have many websites and a large mailing list you still can go broke fast if something changes like in google algorithm or you you get hacked.

Build several sources of income online. One by one. Invest in getting and learning good courses an information online.

But never believe online business is easy like they tell you.

Sure you can make a lot of money passively, but it's hard to learn, start and keep.

I feel for you in your situation, but be sure to stick with the consistent paycheck.
Any venture that you start will take money at first. I recommend you read "The Richest Man In Babylon", but I will give you a breakdown. Basically take 10% of your earned income and set it aside in a savings. Figure out a way for that money to work for you i.e. web hosting a blog, reselling, etc. You need money to reinvest in your ship or it will sink. Therefore you need that job for now.

Figure out why you want to do this and try to fix that. For most people it is an ego thing. A lot of people are genuinely lazy and feed their ego on forums like these and subreddits all day long. It is so easy to read the headlines of all these marketers spamming their courses, and believe not only it is attainable, but easy. Do not fall in that pit. Fix the internal by setting goals, appreciating what you have, and being the best worker you can be. Save some money and re-invest in you, your family, and your goals.

If you were my daughter I would tell you to download the eBay app., go to garage sales and thrift stores, and check Completed Listings on everything that jumps out at you. Stay away from heavy items, electronics, and glassware at first. If you don't already have an eBay account I would start one and make 10-20 small purchases (chargers, common sports cards, etc.) to get some decent feedback, so you look better as a Seller. Buy the stuff and flip it. Re-invest at least 50%. Rinse / repeat. Not super easy, but scalable, and doable.

I would also tell my daughter to download the FBA Seller Central app. and sign up. Scan books while you are in the thrift stores. Learn what Sales Ranks are good or bad. Books are like 4/ $1, and I have found and sold many books for $50+.

This is what I do Full-Time. I started while working as an Engineer Assistant. Eventually I made enough on my side hustle to jump ship. Now I am working from home and I don't really like it. It has been nearly 3 years and it doesn't fit my personality. Also, when your side-hustle becomes your income it becomes work.

Flipping / reselling has become cliche because of Gary V., but it works. It is not nearly as easy as it was when I began, but it is still viable if you know when to pivot.

My advice is keep working your job, keep working on you, learn how to flip for profit, and eventually get your money to a point to do Retail Arbitrage on Amazon FBA (there is nothing like RA flips during the 4th Quarter on Amazon).

Good luck to you. As TLC says, "Don't go chasing Waterfalls".

Decide on a business model. There are two primary business models that prospective affiliate marketers choose between.
    Create a website.
    Select a niche.
    Choose products and services.

Hi Filterqueen, I just read this and I empathise with you as I remember feeling this way when I was trying to figure an alternative to my day job.

What kept me going was literally not going back to my day job lol! I remember having to pick myself up all the time, not having a life and never seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

I honestly feel that this is a mental game so maybe working on your mindset right now is crucial more than finding what it takes to make a living online.

Also, you say you are writing reviews, maybe this is not your thing and you need to find an alternative to drive traffic to your affiliate links.

As Gary Vee likes to say ''If you hate losing than you already lost!'' and this is so true. I failed even after finding success, but now I embrace it instead of crying over my losses. I even lost thousands of dollars but I literally learned how not to blink an eye and learn my biggest lesson!

I believe we all have a purpose on this planet and a day job is definitely not what we are here for

Or am I wasting my time and money trying to do this? It seems so competitive like everyone's doing it.

Anyway sorry don't mean to sound negative, just want to get going on this or something that I can work hard on and grow into something more than my current low paying job. Thanks!
Hello regards, it seems impossible too very difficult, but the reality is that many people have achieved it. so you have to try. I ask you, do you work with the micro tasks? it can be an extra $ 100 per month

Yes you can definitely continue to do the same if it is profitable and if not then focus on your current job which is giving you an amount constantly

I would never quit your job till the income you make online equals or is greater than that you earn from a job

After all most internet businesses you can start to see some results even small from 2-3 hours per day work. Plus if you have any extra money from your job you can use it to pay for online traffic.

I understand where you coming from but like the others here, I will advise you to have a stable job, especially since you have kids, but you can work on that affiliate marketing as well if you have your spare time, since that will help you to earn extra money, many people earn from this so I won't say that is totally waste of time, if you work and pay attention to what you are doing, for sure the result will be good. Try to watch some videos on how to be successful in doing this affiliate marketing, that will surely work.

I say you need to approach this like any new business venture. Don't leave your job just yet. Since you are entering an already established market with competitors, you will need to focus on providing a different value proposition that would make you stand out from the rest.

I'm still a huge advocate of teaching new marketers to keep their jobs because you can take the perspective of watching how business owners set-up their own processes and manage systems. Or even how they acquire and retain customers (like getting paid to learn).

But more importantly, there's no shame in stacking more than one income stream. Most marketers want leveraged and residual income, but forget about "active" income for services performed and compensated right now!

I once used my job + internet side hustle to pay off more than $30,000 in debt in less than 9 months, I know some other people could have done it way faster, but even as someone who is still learning -- that was one of my first big wins.

on the flip side, sometimes you need to hit a bottom and get stressed out of your mind to realize how well you can actually perform in your internet business.

Unless your day job is not eating all your daily waking time and energy, keep your day job for now. Making money online is not easy and is not hopeless either. If you are focused on your niche, you will progress. If money is not an issue for you or depending where you live and as single mom you can temporarily survive with state benefits or child support then leave the damn job. You can also start with a cheap domain/hosting, you can find lots of them, some of them even offer hosting for free.

Keep your job.You can learn and take action every single day even if its only an hour a day.Don't be in a rush ,it is tough as a newbie to make money off the bat but do the reviews and stay consistent ,then also add youtube reviews as well and combine them both .The thing is you don't want to take any money out of your business when starting out so you will reinvest the money to learn more and grow your business.

Ok First of all look for people that have a problem. Then find the product that solves that problem and put it to the people. Make more sales. How to do this is simple. get a facebook page name it after the product you have found then contact. 25 people a day with the problem. Then in 30 days you will be noticed. Hope it helps

Yes, as everyone is saying, keep the day job. Affiliate marketing is very deceiving as there is so much mention of success and $$ signs to follow. Well to be honest, affiliate marketing is very hard to begin, is it impossible no; just takes a lot of time, commitment and effort. Can you make money, absolutely!!! and it is a very good goal to have. However, Its not free to get going with affiliate marketing. So you will definitely need money to save to get things going. I use a very affordable platform that has been getting me income, by not only building a marketing business for people offline, but also an online marketing company. At the same time, I am doing affiliate marketing to build passive income that is residual.

Do I have a full time job, yep! I work and travel quite extensively and have a family with 3 children. Some might ask, where I find the time. If you want it, you will make it happen. It doesn't feel like much when passion is driving you to the end goal Happy to help any way I can, stay focused and always remember the end goal!

For you to really see/be at a point where you see great consistent money coming in you'll have to be consistent in the one thing you are trying to do day in and day out for about 6 months, theres no way around this. What ever you try to do really tell yourself that you believe in what you are set out to do and will stick with it for at least six months or longer.

I'd rather advice you to keep your day job where you get a fix income and if you have more time, get all throughout the internet for a online homebased job.
