Nobody can answer this until you explain what the course entailed, why you took it, and what you want to do now.

The course contained over 30 modules with intensive focus on SEO and SMO. I honestly took the course because i wanted to expand my spectrum and learn it as an additional skillset. Apart from that i would love for it to be a source of side income.

If you're looking for a source of side income, a qualification in SEO or SMO might help you get a part-time job. Alternatively, the knowledge could benefit your own project. It depends what you prefer.

Setting up as a freelancer would probably take longer to pay off, but would give you more earnings freedom and flexibility.

I'm not really sure what you're asking. If you're starting out, I always recommend to do as much as possible yourself, then outsource once you've done it so you can know what to expect (in terms of time, pain points etc). If you cannot do something, then this is another opportunity to outsource.
