well written content ranks for very too little keywords?

Hi to everyone. I am running a gambling portal and since 1 year I am doing SEO on my own. I've learnt a lot but now i am stuck into something and need a little help. I can't understand why my articles rank for few keywords although text is more than 1000 words and i've made detailed keyword research. My competitors articles are less comprehensive but according to Ahrefs they rank for far more keywords than mine. My most visited article that is ranked number 1 in almost every country has 10 times less keywords indexed in comparison to the number 2 ranked competitor's article. Can someone explain me this please? Thanks!

Google doesn't really care about how good or original the text is. Backlinks and authority are everything.

Do you have backlinks to your site? Is it possible your competition has much more backlinks?
