Emails getting high open rate but no clicks. Please help

Good day everyone

I tried using email marketing to promote an affiliate offer. I have an 8 day sequence and i always provide value in my emails.

The problem is, I have a high open rate but whenever i send a link to my offer i get zero clicks.

Please i need to understand what I'm doing wrong

    If your email open rate is good, that shows your subject line is great. But if people are not clicking your affiliate links, please check the way your email is drafted or the quality of your product. I will recommend you start re-phrasing our emails..

      The product is a really nice product. being in the health niche on clickbank, I've seen tons of trash products but this one is really really valuable. I will start rephrasing my emails.

    Apart from the body of the email and quality of the products, It depends on the quality of the list, from where did you get the people on the list? If they know you they will probably click the links, If no, then they require some warm up.

    Make sure you use a third party tracking software, so you know how many times your links are being clicked on.

    I use Aweber for my auto-responder. If I send an email in text format, rather than HTML, it doesn't show how many people clicked on the links in my email.

    So, make sure you are using HTML format emails and a link tracking software.

    That should give you a more realistic idea as to how many clicks you are getting.

    The subject links rock KS - which is awesome - but ask yourself these questions:

    - why did people join your list? Did you provide them with immense value through your blog or email? If not, your clicks will be low because folks don't trust that you know your stuff and recommend quality products.

    - what is the product? Is it 100% aligned or related to your niche?

    - are your emails valuable, helpful, filled with rich content? or do your emails point to blog links or videos filled with helpful content?

    A few questions to ask buddy, to boost clicks.

      I try my best to provide value through my blog and email.
      Please how else do you suggest i get them to trust me ? i think that's where my main problem is

      the product is 100% aligned with my niche
      I try to keep my emails valuable. some emails are just content while some others point to blog posts.

    Well, it's been said, seems like the subject line must be great if you are having a "high open rate" -which is very relative by the way.

    Now, the ONLY problem you have from that point is YOUR MESSAGE!

    Not the "quality of the product" (how can one know the 'quality' if one does not even click at first?), not that much the "quality of the list" since you STILL have a "high open rate" anyway, no, it's your MESSAGE.

    It's the message that will create the 'perception' (mind set) you want your target market to have to persue the 'journey' you propose to them. Moreover, much of the power resides in the PRE-message (pre-selling) you serve them to entice them to eventually go to see (click) what you are proposing them to see. It's an ART!

    A campaign, a serious one, must be well thought and crafted with a clear path, which is not done overnight!

    So, it's not a matter of what you are doing wrong, it's a matter of what you ARE NOT doing, or not doing adequately.

      Whenever i send emails i always do my best to optimize them based on the data I'm getting.
      I agree with your idea of the message being off
      It seems i need to learn more about crafting email messages and i will get right on that.
      I've ran 2 campaigns. the first one, I linked people to a blog post and got 40% ctr even though I've not gotten prior clicks in previous emails.

      When i used the exact email with the exact headline in my second campaign, i got zero clicks and a low open rate.
      I'm still trying to figure out why

  • This means your subject line is attracting people but the body of your email is losing interest.

    If you are not getting any clicks, than rewrite the body of your email. It is not relating to the reader and getting them to want more information. Think about the audience you are writing to and figure out what drives them and what type of information or story may relate to them and get them to keep clicking.

      Hi, I wonder how Bot could "interfere" in the "high-open-rate to zero clicks" situation?
      Care to elaborate?

      On the other end I don't think it's a good idea to post one's SMTP IP in a public forum. I would not, for sure. Unless you explain how useful would that be?

  • Check you message. The high open rate is a good sign. Sometimes the problem could be as simple as they don't know where to click. You need to include direction in your emails. Tell them what to do.

      Well, ahem, if you carefully read the OP there's NO CONVERSION, so asking for a CONVERSION RATE is kind of asking how much rain we get on a sunny day.

      Precisely, he states he gets a high open rate but gets NO CLICKS, hence asking how many clicks is ... well... kind of make me wonder how do people read questions... or if they read only part of it because in a too hurry and too much messages...

      As for the "bounce rate" in Email Marketing it is just common bounce rate when done properly. Black hat email marketing and SPAM get high "email bounce rate" -not to be confused with "page bounce rate" term found in SEO.

    so here are 2 things I can think of off the top of my head:

    1. Your CTA isn't clear so people don't know to click or they are not driven to click
    2. Your Email isn't properly tracking the link clicks. Have you checked the on page analytics to see if traffic is flowing?
    3. Your button isn't programmed to work in majority of the email providers.

    Nothing new there, l spent a year or so with Aweber trying everything l could to get some decent sales, after giving my list a truckload of video's and other freebies.

    It rarely worked.

    Or what l found out is, you need a long sales funnel, since the only sale you will likely ever get is the initial one.

    I gave that up after a few years, but l have met others with responsive lists, so l guess that it is possible.

    Its not professional at all. it puts advertising in your mail so people open it and put it into the junk.

    Anyway, how much is your % open rate, how is the size of your list, and % clicks?

    What are you promoting and how is your ad and giveaway?

    i mean ad and giveaway must match with your product.

      Hello john. Thanks for the response. my open rate was about 40%.. ctr is around 6%.

      i have a little list .. basically just 15 subscribers.

      I acquire subscribers at about $1.5 per lead and the commission is about $20.. so i need to see a sale in at least 1 in every 10 subs to be profitable.

      I'm promoting a weight loss offer and my ads and giveaway are all related to the offer.

      Please how does mailchimp put my mail in the junk?

    You said you have an 8 email sequence. Sorry if someone asked and I missed the answer, but in which email do you first include an offer with a link to click?

    You should include and "train" your list to click thru on your links from day one (even if it's first ti go to your free blog oosts, YT videos, etc).

      As for training my audience to click, I honestly didn't do that but I've started doing that.

        That is an excellent insight here from Jen, often overlooked, yes training your list is part of a well planned "customer journey" path... (hint: search the the words in quotes)

        And, reading kingspark's response it seems you might have put the finger on a very precise way of thinking and doing things from now on... That does not mean to neglect all other details, of course.

        So, we can conclude in part that an important piece of THE MESSAGE -that many have mentioned in different ways until here in this thread- must always be included some CALLS-TO-ACTION to CLICK on something (even though if it's not for something to sell, which is well done to not sending "affiliate links" or trying to "hard-selling" from the start).

        Now, finding interesting things to tell and share / send to your list is part of the art of "list nurturing", as in keeping them excited and salivating and "ready to buy" even though you are NOT SELLING them. Whatever, that is that you send to your list, I recommend links back to YOUR website for the most of it.*And if you want to share something on another website, like YT for example, always have a meaning to control the link. Even if it's for affiliate sales, because if you want to be successful in Affiliate Marketing you must master the art of "pre-selling"...

          I am constantly improving my email marketing game. I try to avoid being salesy

          I've updated my sequence so that at least 80% of my emails have calls to action of which the majority is helpful content on my blog

          As for properly preselling, I'll keep at it until I'm better at it.

          kingspark- Just an idea, but maybe go back to your email funnel and on the very first email, edit it so it says something like, "Just so you know more about me and who I am, I made a video (or blog post, FB post, etc) for you" - & add a link? That will let the reader know more about who you are (they just subscribed, they're probably at least a little curious), and allows you to include an unobtrusive link for them to click through on from day one. Just a thought, for what it's worth.

    I think the Problem with your campaign is that you don't have the right list of Customers. If your Click rate is good that mean you template is good but people are not intended to buy your products may be because they are demanding more or your offer don't give them value for money.

    You say you are getting a good open rate but no clicks, and that you provide valuable content in your email. Are you providing too much value? If you are promoting a product or service are you giving away too much information in the email, without encouraging the receiver to click through and see more information themselves? You are clearly good at grabbing their attention and enciting interest enough to get a good open rate, so try and play around with your email body and the texts you are using instead

    Great discussion over here. I would agree that you should think step by step and understand where does your user fail to convert. Get some UI tests going, use a friend. However, the content most likely is the main selling point.

    After you have 150 or 1500 you might have a better understanding of their behavior.

    If you're getting good open rates but no sales the first thing I would look at is if the offer was congruent with the value I'm giving.

    There's no point trying to give advice about working out for example when you're trying to sell a car, bad example I know but just to emphasise the point. The value you give will not impact people if the product you are then selling has no connection to it.

    If the offer is congruent then it could be the quality of the product but also the price.

    Split test different things and you'll know when you're getting closer.

    There is probably some sort of disconnect between your email subject line and the message....Eg if the subject was "How to use video to make money online". Then you start talking about blogging no one will click on the link



    The 2nd thing could be that the links aren't being tracked properly. Some email autoresponders don't track brilliantly so try an external tracking software and see how that goes.

Keep your email concentrated on the action you need readers to take. Hold note down to just the essential.     First of all, if you are getting a good open rate, so this means you have a good subject line and your emails are not landing in spam. Well, congratulations here!

    Secondly, if you are not getting clicks this can have 3 reasons:
    i)Your audience is not interested in your product or is confused/lacks trusts - A/B test your audience.
    ii)The email body content does not entice your audience to know more about your product/service- Work on a better pitch and try making your audience curious about your product/service
    iii)As @chuckholmes said, your links are not getting tracked. - Find a better email service provider

    Diagnosing & fixing problems with your email:

    Low open rate = Subject line problem
    A subject line that builds curiosity and is congruent with your content works best. Curiosity compels them to open to find out what you're talking about. Keeping it in line with your content ensures they don't feel misled when they do open.

    Low Clicks = Multiple possible causes, any one or a combination:
    1. Copywriting:
    Your copy should be tightly focused on getting them to click. Build curiosity while telling them what they're going to see. Talk about the pain they want to avoid and the benefits they want to gain.

    2. Copy is too long
    Get to the point. Time is valuable and if they start to see you as wasting their time you will lose attention and see your opens and clicks drop to nothing. The purpose of the subject line is to get them to click. The copy is to get them interested enough to click your CTA. Your salespage should do the selling. The only thing your emails should "sell" is the click. The purpose of your CTA is to make sure they know what to do.

    3. Copy is not congruent
    That means with both your subject line and your audience. The term "bait & switch" applies here where you imply one thing and then show another. Nobody likes that. Make sure your subject is in line with your copy/offer or the relevant connection is clearly explained in your message.

    4. Call To Action (CTA)
    Your CTA must be clear and concise leaving no room for confusion. While you don't need a button, they do help. Make your link (or button) text a statement of what to do. Ex: "Click to Go See It Here" "Click To See X Now" "Click To Get [benefit]" for text links and for buttons just remove the "Click To" so the button isn't huge. Above the button, you do want to have "Click the button below to..."

    No Clicks = Usually techincal
    This can be avoided by following best practices. Test your link, test your button, send yourself a test message before going live. The last thing you want is to have a promotion where your opens are through the roof with no clicks!

    The only thing you can get from 15 subscribers is a guess. You need more subs before you have meaningful data you can make good decisions with.

    Let me ask you 2 questions.

    1. Do your subscribers know and trust you?

    2. And do you keep sending promo emails or having a balance of intro, content and promo emails?


    From my experience, it takes an average person at least 7-8 times to look at the offer before making a decision to buy or not.

    Which also brings me to the third and final question.

    That's why you have zero sales.

    You have built a targeted list of prospects who you have given TOO MUCH VALUABLE INFORMATION to.

    Your list has been trained from day one NOT to buy from you or click your links.

    They have been trained to get everything from you for free.

    Your emails shouldn't contain the answers to their problems.

    Rather, your emails should ONLY describe their problems, and let the link you give them be the solution.

    You also put your list through an indoctrination process with ZERO SELLING.

    If you don't give them a link to buy from on DAY ONE, then you have tainted the list.

    Your list is now dirt. It's worthless. It will take a LOOOONG time now for you to turn your list around.

    Now what you need to do is STOP SENDING FREE SOLUTIONS and start describing their problems.

    Pick one aspect in the product you are promoting and talk about that ONE problem until they feel it and can't stand it.

    Scratch the itch. Poke the sore. Then offer the HOPE (i.e. your link). Do this DAILY since you are in the health niche.

    That niche you need to send at LEAST five emails a week to be competitive and stay in front of your audience. and every email you send should poke at a pain and make them feel it.

    It should NEVER solve their problem.

    From here on out, I recommend sending an email every day. Then work up to twice a day.

    Constantly poking at their pain.

    Then offering hope with a link.

    Let the product give them the solution.

    ALSO, fix your initial email sequence.

    On the very first email, in the P.S. preferrably, let them know that there is hope (an offer for your product).

    If you don't let them know you are there to sell from day one they will never know they are supposed to buy.

    One more thing...

    Your freebie is probably horrible. It is probably all the solution they need (or feel they need) and probably makes too much of a promise. And if you give them what they want in the freebie they will never have a reason to buy the product.

    So make the freebie about their mistakes or their pain as well.

    If that doesn't work, then here's an idea...

    Offer a new affiliate product. Even better idea would be to ask your list what they need help with most so you can create better content for them. Then find an affiliate offer that fits those needs or see if there is a part of the origial offer that solves that need. and then send an email focusing on that pain and then link to the product letting them know there is hope for them to solve that pain in a particular section (or page or video etc. specifically).

    You can trust this advice because as you can see I don't spend my time in here very often. I do this stuff for real. And with my free time (which I have a lot of) I live life doing what I like to do. But I was bored and I thought about this forum recently and decided to pay a visit since it's been so long. So use what I just shared with you. Hope you follow my info above and don't listen to anyone else's post. They're regurgitators who don't do squat and don't know squat like most people spending their time here (unless they are sellers making most of their money selling squat...things haven't really changed).

    Give more value in your emails and try to build your list with direct mail.

    Send out postcards and drive them to a Free Report and then make sure that the report educates them.

    If you do that, they will start buying from your link.

    The answer is stop selling. Start giving advise. My emails are opened because I send them to pages that give advice to solve the problem that that people have. After I have given the advise I put the link and say. click here for more advise. Or send people to a bridge page with a bonus. I find that giving advise sells more then selling itself. remember it is internet marketing not internet selling Hope It Helps

    Your high open rate implies that you have a good subject line to your email draft.
    I guess you can get a better click rate if you pay attention to what follows below,

    1. Body of the Email.
    Make sure to cut the content of your email to the minimum and keep only the essentials so that the reader can take the information in bare minimum time. Also motivate readers to take actions. For which, you can add click button, deadlines, exciting language and so forth.

    2. Target Audience
    Every niche in business has its own target audience and it's of the utmost importance that you specifically target the audience related to your niche so as to increase you click rate. Say you are a firm that supplies health care appliances so your target audience would contain hospitals, medical instittutes, home health care firms etc.

    3. Goal of the Campaign.
    Before even starting the campaign, you need to set your goals right. It's important to know what you are aiming for, be it a sales campaign or introducing a new feature lauch to the people; your email ought to reflect your goals and peole should be able to understand it easily.

    4. Follow Ups
    One way of inspiring people to take action on your email campaign is following up, make sure you have your email funnel ready with follow ups. There are several email marketing tools that can aid you in this.

    So kudos to the High open rates means you've got some good headlines but Open rates don't really account for much when you come to think of it IMO.

    The click is more or so the sell.

    You want to target your audience with different angles ..
    1.You want to hit their pain point then go for the click.
    2.You want to point out the benefits of your product(Bullets would be good) then go for the click.
    3.Maybe a scarcity approach as well as removing any doubts the customer might have(money back guarantees etc) then the click.

    You should remember when writing the email you are aiming for the clicks so do exactly that

    Use the skirt method of marketing that is the skirt is long enough to hide the nice bits but short enough to keep you interested.I had the same problem but I found the headline got the email opened. But the quality of the email never worked. No matter how professional the email was. Now I use the method of Pain then Solution. Example. How To Get Your emails Opened and make them purchase your product. Now the story If you are getting your emails opened and making no sales. I feel your pain. elaborate the story. Now the solution After 6 months of only making 1 sale now and again I found this fantastic tool that will force people to not only purchase your product but also he will tell his friends and build your list on autopilot making you more sales and you do nothing then. your link

    Hi because you are getting the emails open it is not the heading. so it is two things. 1 the email. 2 the website. So lets start with the email As you go into the email remember it is like a women's skirt keep it Long enough to hide the good bits but short enough to keep men interested. Now the biggest mistake is giving so much information away you have no need to purchase the product. So keep your emails to the facts and to the pain factor example.     The chances are that you measure the success by the number of people who open the mail (email open rate) and the number of people who click on a link (click-through rate).

    That's how I used to measure it.

    And while there's nothing wrong with that, what gets overlooked is that the click-through rate is entirely dependent on the open rate, because unless people open your email, there's no chance they can click on it!

    Usually this means that your bait is good, and people are interested in what you have to say and offer. However when they get to your email it is either formatted wrong, or not clear enough and doesnt pertain to them specifically.

    Always want to hit your target audience and adress their pain points.

    "i always provide value in my emails" - Not sure what you mean with that. If it is value to your prospect, your email must me huge, value differs per prospect. In my opinion, you need to profile your target prospects first, categorize these in groups based on their "need", background, profile and other relevant factors to your product and then send different mails per profiled category.

    Because you are receiving high open rates tells me it is not the subject line. Only two options left 1 the content in your email. use the pain method. Tell a story why you have used this product. the other answer is the website it is a poor out of use information .

    But the reason most people do not make a sale is because of giving away the farm. So the email should be like a young girls mini skirt Long enough to cove the good bits. but short enough to keep people interested. Your emails short be interesting and to the point not to give away the farm. example learn 6 ways to generate traffic. but not giving the six ways to do it. hope it helps

    Perhaps it is time to ASK your subscribers what they want or need to learn from you and then email you their answers through your personal email address.

    That is if you don't mind giving them your email address.

    Another alternative is to do a Monkey Survey - a survey through free web-based application of that name and then send your subscribers the link to check and submit their answers to any questions you may have for them.

    Doing so will provide you a better understanding of what they actually need and want to learn from you as your subscribers.

    There are a lot of points for your affiliate products not being sold:

    1. You have a list that is not hot and not ready to buy.

    2. People still do not have money.

    3. Products that you sell are not of high quality

    4. Your writing style must be changed because it does not convert

    5. People don't need your product

    6. You must have a large traffic volume

    Hey, I would like to share my experience with Email Marketing. Last year I was working on an affiliate campaign where I had to pitch a lot of websites to join the affiliate program.
    Firstly, I researched and sorted out websites according to my query and made a list of those websites.
    Secondly, I used the Hunter.io app to extract emails from websites. It gives you the email with a percentage showing the probability that the emails being shown are legit.
    Thirdly, I made a very basic pitch offering the recipients to join as an affiliate partner with me. I never shared any link or any promotional stuff in the email.
    I had a good email open rate as well as the response rate. I managed my email open rate with mail tracker on my Gmail account.
    I would like to say it really worked for me.
    I had to change my pitch with some variations in the initial stages and did the test.
    Also, keep your subject to the point and enticing for the recipient.
    Once a responded replied showing interest in the affiliate partnership, then I sent him the details and a promotional link to entice them further to join the program.

    Everything that everyone has replied here has been great advice. The only thing I can think of to add is that if all else fails increase the size of your list. ( Never stop building your list)
    The more eyes you can put on your offer the better your chances of making a sale.

    If you are not getting link clicks, make sure to presell a little bit more what you are offering.

    This way readers know what they can expect and are likely to click on the link.

    Also, make sure to hyperlink and not use the full affiliate link. Most of the times these affiliate links doesn't look clean.
