Edit: Why won't anyone answer my question about? How would I create an affiliate program link?

According to the moderators my post is too demanding. Heaven forbid I ruffle any feathers! I would like to delete my post to save everyone from any ruffling but I can't figure out how. Thank you very much to all those that took the time to respond!

If i understood you correctly. Maybe add in a tracking number with call recording. That way you can track leads from the magazine. Or just charge ad space.

Okay, after skimming through the info on this, I see that it is a solution BUT my concern would be the workload it would produce. If my inclinations are correct (and please correct me if I am wrong) I would have to listen to every call and find out if a sale was made and then bill the business. I was hoping to have something in place that tracked sales automatically so that I can make money while I fish.

If I understand what you are saying, you want to earn commissions for referrals to businesses that do not have referral (affiliate) programs set up yet. If so, you can't do anything until they set up an affiliate program of their own so that you can join it and have your affiliate linked tracked.

If they don't want to bother with that, you might be able to convince them to give you a special discount code that your customers can use and they pay you a commission whenever that discount code is used (and then you just have to hope that they are honest and actually do it).

Thank you much for taking the time! You understood me correctly. I want to learn how to build/setup/write??? an affiliate program for the business that I am wanting to sell for. I can find loads of information on how to become an affiliate but I am struggling with finding info and how to's about building the program and creating the links. The businesses that I want to sell for would be willing to work with me and allow me access to their websites and identities so that I could build the program on their behalf.

Affiliate networks would pretty much solve all. Not all costs money. Some do take a few percentages off. Other than that - not much of freedom here. UNless setting up bitly and praying the partnership will work on faith and agreement.

Yeah, after researching bitly, and correct me if I am wrong but what i am seeing is that it would require the business and I to find out if my link lead to a sale. That sounds like a lot of work especially if i am advertising for a dozen businesses. My comment to dave from up thread explains what i am trying to learn.

You can track clicks sent, leads generated, or sales made. Sales made is a little more tricky (but more accurate and appealing) as they need to be selling something where the transaction happens online.

Of course it's more appealing to them where they only pay for actual sales made.

I want to learn how to build/setup/write??? an affiliate program for the business that I am wanting to sell for.
Building/Setting up an affiliate program for them is another matter. What they're selling has to be something that can be sold online, even if fulfilment takes place offline. So you are not limited to digital products, but there are some considerations.

Ensure notifications (for people and/or systems) are being sent so fulfilment takes place. The last thing you want is people paying for something and not getting what they paid for. You also need to have protections in place so people can't just say they paid online to scam product they didn't actually pay for.

I'd have an agreement that includes a percentage of the revenue generated (including on sales driven by other affiliates), in addition to a setup fee. This is a whole new revenue stream you'd be opening for them.

Good stuff to think about here rCaliente! I hadn't thought of the fact that the transaction must happen online in order for it to be tracked online (duhhh). I am coming to the conclusion that I am going to have to do some leg work in order get paid for transactions that happen offline (which i think would be a big percentage). Nonetheless I still need a way to see if the business/referral they received came from my site so that we have something that can be crosschecked with their sales. Where would I go to learn how to generate and affiliate link on their behalf so that the traffic can be tracked? Or is a discount code a better way to go as suggested up thread?

You would have to set up an affiliate program for them or they would need one in place to generate an affiliate link.

A discount code is one way to track sales for a campaign. The problem is when it's tallied manually or in a system you don't have access to. You have no accountablity from them other than their honesty.

Either you'd have to get the fulfillment provider to sign up to an affiliate network and create the offer, which you'd sign up as an affiliate for...

...or you'd create the offer and have them sign up as your affiliate. This second way is how I'd do it:

Find an existing affiliate network (WarriorPlus, JVZoo, etc.; that's what you can google) and use that to create your own offers. You'd accept full payment from the end customer and pay out the fulfillment providers as if they were the affiliate. The fulfillment provider would have to sign up as your affiliate on that offer.

So the money flows this way:

Ultimate customer --> Pays You through the affiliate link --> You Pay the Fulfillment Provider.

Eg. Customer pays $100 for kayak rental --> You receive $100 --> Affiliate network sends $80 to the Fulfillment Provider (as if they were the affiliate) --> You keep $20 (as your finder's fee, less whatever charge the affiliate network takes for the privilege of using it.)

Make sense? It's kind of the reverse of how you'd normally think about an affiliate payment process. You get to keep full control over the payment processing, control of chargebacks, whether to even have the offer exist or not (say you find out they suck, or you don't like them anymore at some point), and see all the back end data. Those are all reasons I'd choose to do it this way.

I keep thinking of things...you should also be using this process to build a segmented buyers list.

I had officially given up on this forum.
This completely makes sense. I am very grateful that you took the time to answer my question. I was stuck in the mud and now I'm off and running again. Thank you Jason Kanigan!

Seeing you have written so many posts in this thread and you seem to have the expectation that somebody owes you a method for doing things where you can make money without any effort, I would recommend that you actually break the fishing rod, pay attention to Jason and the other ideas suggested here and work your butt off until you have money rolling in on a regular basis.

Nobody owes you anything and you need to consider what you ask and how you phrase it if you're to get anybody replying to you.

    Just my 2 cents worth.
