New Youtube Channel: From 0 to 1000 Subscribers

I've been reading many threads about growing an email list, a blog or a chat community, and usually, these discussions turned off after a while.
I think anyway it's good to keep yourself accountable, putting your project in front of a big audience, and I have all the best intentions to keep going with it!

I'm a digital marketer, I help my clients with their marketing strategy and I have experience with email lists and podcast. What I've never worked with is YouTube.

That's why I decided to start a new discussion that will follow my journey with Youtube.

I've just created my first YouTube channel, and at this point, I have just 4 videos on it. Here the newest I posted.
From 24% to 42% Conversion on a Landing Page (WITHOUT An Email Form)
(Obviously, if you like the video, subscribe to the channel! )

Since I started with 0 videos and 0 subscribers, I think it's gonna be useful for both me you to follow the entire path.

A few fundamental points:
  1. I won't use any scammy technique like commenting "SUB for SUB" on other popular videos or buying followers. I want my subscribers to follow me cause they're genuinely interested in my videos
  2. I won't use any promotion. My aim is to grow my channel organically even if it will take more time and effort
  3. I'll follow a schedule of filming and uploading a video each other week. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do more than this for the moment.

TARGETS
  • Grow views and subscribers without using ads or scammy techniques
  • Grow an email list through my videos
  • Post 1 video each other week
  • Reach 1000 subscribers on YouTube

TIME FRAME
I guess I'm too optimistic, but I'd like to reach 1000 followers on YouTube by September 2019.
This means getting around 80 subscribers per month, and I'm well aware you need to have viral videos to do that.

Anyway, I keep reading that the more videos you have, the easier is to grow subscribers. Mine is a hope that it will get easier through the time.

YOUTUBE SUBSCRIBERS PLAN
The YouTube channel is brand new. I won't tell any friend or family about my channel. I want my subscribers to be authentic people who want to watch my videos and listen to what I have to say.

On each video, I'll suggest my viewers to subscribe if they like my stuff.
Plus I have a list of Facebook groups where I'm an active user, that I can use to give more exposure to my channel.

EMAIL LIST PLAN
Almost every video I upload has a content upgrade that can be download if the viewer wants to get deeper into the topic. I'm not sure if this technique is a good one for YouTube (since a video gets less promotion by the platform if it makes viewers leave the website), but I'm sure just a little part of my viewers will take action.

TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS THREAD
Since I'm taking my first steps with YouTube, I'm not sure the plan I'm following is the right one. For this reason, I'll show all the background things I'm doing that have to do almost nothing with YouTube.

That will make this discussion more than just about YouTube, but mostly about how to grow a following using any other platform.

As I wrote above, this is a totally new adventure for me, so if you find it interesting, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Equally, if you have some recommendations/advice, please do share!

I watched your videos, and they are AMAZING!
    No kidding.
You are going to be successful, maybe soon, maybe it will take time, but I am sure that you will if you keep going.
You provide quality information and content, you also work on branding (which is awesome in longterm) and it is just a matter of time before you reach your goal of 1000 subs

I wish you good luck in your journey!

    P.S. nice website

Regarding advice and recommendations, I see you are a digital marketer so no point in telling you the basics you already know.
Forum marketing (that you are doing right now) is a very good way to start.
If you have proper funds for paid advertising, you can grow faster: think about Facebook and Instagram advertising (if you are already not doing that), and also paid ads on YouTube.
To increase conversions in your ads, try offering a "bribe", like a PLR product (eBooks).
Buy a guest post on a relevant high-traffic blog that sends the link to your YT channel.
There, few recommendations from the top of my mind.
Sure hope you will find at least some of them helpful.
      Cheers, Matt.

  • Thank you very much Matt! Glad you like the videos!

I'm starting right now, so I'm aware that there's a lot to improve there. For now, I'm focusing on producing content every 2 weeks, included content upgrades for almost all videos and promoting my YouTube Channel.

At the moment I'm not looking for paid ads... I'd like to grow my channel organically, using forums like this one and groups on Facebook and Linkedin.
Do you think I should do it instead, even if my channel is really young?

Alessandro, what exactly do you mean by "content upgrades"?

I understand you want "organic traffic", but if you pay for advertising, it won't mean that those subscribers will be fake. You will simply reach the audience more easily than you would in this "free" way.
Sure this quality post will direct traffic to your YT channel over time, but if you play your ads smart, it can act as a highway for getting traffic with amazing ROI.

But don't get me wrong, I am not saying that paying for ads is the only good way of reaching traffic and that you MUST do it.
I am just trying to tell you my experience: SOMETIMES it's better to invest money in ads than your precious time!

Honestly, I personally never tried building my YT channel (not yet ) because I am too busy at the moment and I'm not sure how I would do it all... However, I have a membership on a PLR site (indigitalworks) and it has a lot of materials on YouTube stuff. Never really browsed YT section, but I know there are a lot of good books in other areas that are useful (I learned a lot from those books).

Anyway, you can go check it out and if you find something you like, just hit me back with a title and I'll send it to you (free of course).

Your videos are amazing just watched two of them. You could try to rank for related videos, which will bring in more views.

You could make two playlist using your current 4 videos, 3 in each of the list and name the list with your target keyword / phrase. But see that the videos are slightly related to each other.

Playlists with targeted keywords can rank the whole list in the mobile app.

Hope this helps a little to gain views and subs.

Wish you good luck with your YouTube journey and reach your goals.

    • Really interesting! I thought about creating lists in the future talking about a single argument with more than one video (it looks like YouTube gives value to videos that lead to other videos).
I was thinking about tutorials for a specific software, but I haven't thought about lists based on video topics.
      Thanks for the advice!

You can do it Alessandro by following the basics; create helpful content, build strong bonds with other YT users, and use SEO to target viewers. Keep it simple, persistently, be generous, and everything will grow steadily.

Good luck with this, your videos DO look really good. Whilst you should never rely solely on it, I do know people who are doing 6 figures a month after 1-2 years purely from their YouTube channel.

    So keep it up :-)

Thanks a lot, mate! For the moment I'm focusing on creating content for my channel, and I hope this will pay in the future. In your opinion, in what other channels should I put my effort?

  • How can I grow my email list with YouTube?

Simple, I use content upgrades. But what are content upgrades?

Usually, every blogger uses this technique to turn readers into subscribers. It's about creating extra content that viewers can access, in exchange for their email address.

I do the same with my videos. In almost each of them, I suggest downloading a content upgrade, usually in PDF format.
But you can use any content you want: a video series, an audio, a free course...

    It's important that the content:
    • Is in line with the content in the article/video
    • Gets deeper into the content
    • It needs the viewers to write his email address to be accessed

If you can't find anything to add to your article's content, you can even create a recap document where you write what you wrote or talked about in the video.
It works pretty well cause in the case of a video, the viewer doesn't have to go through it again to get the content.

As affmarketer101 said before, I'm using Thrive leads to add popup link in my articles, but at the same time, I create landing pages linked in my video description.

If you want to have an example, click on the last link I've uploaded and check it till the end to see me promoting the content upgrade.

    Hi Alessandro!

I don't think 1000 subscribers by September 2019 too optimistic a feat for you. I think you'll get there so much faster! Maybe in 3 months or something. Your channel and website are awesome! I just subscribed to your channel. Your videos are good quality, you explain nicely and the information is good. I'm planning to put content upgrades for every blog post on my beauty blog too.

But seriously the color coordination on your site is so nice and the little drawing on the front page too. It's so cool. Did you design it yourself? :O

    Good luck!

      Thanks for the motivation mate!

Yes, I've done everything by myself and continuing to take care of the website and YouTube channel by myself. It's the same thing I do for my clients!

      Thanks for the subscription anyway!

Yes, I decided to grow my subscribers organically, without using ads or fake views.
I know it will take way more time, and my viewers will be stuck around a couple hundred for some time, but I want to keep subscribers who are honestly interested.

Furthermore, I want to learn how to grow an audience on YouTube and make mistakes along the way. That's why I'm here

    Hey Alessandro,

Great journey you are embarking on. I wish you all the best!

Your videos are looking good though.

I recently started a Youtube channel myself and know how hard it is to grow in the early phase.

But as long as we do not give up, we will reach our goals.

    Again, good job and success!

Thanks for the nice words Giorgio and I'm glad you like my videos!

I've just subscribed to your channel, your video looks great as well!

      Hi Giorgio!

I checked your channel and I subscribed too. Don't ever give up. It's like what Gary Vaynerchuk said: don't ever, ever care about the numbers. As long as you're helping people, keep posting and the audience will come. But keep promoting too. Share it on Facebook, social media platforms, use hashtags, socialize with other influencers, etc.

Your videos are long form content and very informative. Keep it up!
