Which Focus keyword to choose?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding my focus keyword on the frontpage of my website. I understand that it can be a good idea to try ranking first for a long-tail keyword, as over time you're also likely to rank high for the shorter keyword.

In my case I'm a Life and Career Coach, and my first thought was to use 'life & career coach' as focus keyword. But I'm worried that there are very few searches for this four letter word specifically.

If many people search for Life Coach, and many people search for Career coach, but very few people search for Life & Career Coach, is Life & Career Coach then a bad focus keyword?

What is your opinion on this?

I'd really appreciate your input,

Christine

Choose any one focus keyword and use other keyword in content. It doesn't matter what focus keyword you have for a page (Google prefer focus keyword but also rank your page on other keywords that you have proper used in content.

As per my experience use your both Keyword "life coach" and "Career Coach" in Title and meta description and in your content for homepage or blog. So Google give preference your both keyword.

Let see what other Experts say.

If you're going to concentrate on Life, Career, Coach alone you will stuck in dead zone.

Each of these words used in variety of applications, like for example life used with
safer will give you 1 extra point in cases when someone searches for 'life safer' or
Career used as 'Career Cruising' will widen your SERP chances and Coach used in
combination with sport activities may bring traffic to your site 3 word combination
above alone may never give you.

Limited samples of KW will give you limited results compare to what you will get
if you'll open bag of KW kaleidoscope.

Search engines rank individual pages, not entire websites. Each page of your site is an opportunity to go after a completely different search phrase. It may be possible to go after all three, with three different pages, provided the copy on each page is different enough and uniquely helpful.

A life coach and a career coach are not exactly the same thing, so it makes sense that they might have separate pages. Then, perhaps, the home page could be used to explain the basic differences between the two.

    Hello Christine,

Being a digital marketing expert i can suggest you to add both keywords your meta tags (Title & Description).

But the main thing is to build backlinks because by the help of them you can rank well on Google. You need to build links on each keyword by naturally target.

For example create some quality DA, PA links for "Life Coach" and for "Career Coach"

It will help you to get them rank... Hopefully it will help you to get it done.

    Thanks

      Hi Jorgemelisa,

      Thank you for your answer.

In terms of the backlinks - can I check that what you mean is for me to ensure other, strong pages and domains are linking to me?

Any great articles you can recommend?

      Best, Christine

There are lots of websites from where you can get backlinks. Make sure their DA (Domain Authority) & PA (Page Authority ) should be high.

You may submit your article on Sooperarticles, Ezine articles etc website.

        Thanks

    Hello Christine,
Choose your long tail keyword and include that keyword in your title and meta description. Only choosing right keyword won't help you until and unless you don't create keyword-centric content for your site. As content is the king you have to create good content to rank in google and side by side work on the link building and guest posts.

    Thanks

The focus keyword is the search term that you most want your page to rank for, so when people search for that keyword or phrase, they should find you. Yoast SEO it has its own input field for this. The plugin evaluates the page's content and provides feedback on how to improve the content for that focus keyword.

Well, the focus keyword should be the most relevant to the services you provide or about your business. Long tail keyword would be a good choice. Always try to focus on the keywords which have low competition and large search volume. It will help you in google ranking too that's why you need to focus on such keywords.

Life and Career Coach is a perfectly good focus keyword to have in your main site. Keep it broad, it will allow you to play off longer tail keywords as your website grows.

Thanks guys, however I'd still love some clarity on the following:

I understand that the focus keyword I enter is the keyword that I'd most prefer to be found for. But in my case, I consider myself a 'life and career coach'. The problem is that very few people google 'life career coach' together, and 'life coach' and 'career coach' by themselves are very competitive keywords.

So what am I better off doing? Choosing 'life and career' coach, although hardly anyone ever googles it, or 'life coach' or 'career coach', although they're VERY competitive.

The final option would be to think of another keyword like 'life coach london', given I'm based in london. This keyword would be much more searched for that 'life career coach', but unfortunately leaves out the word 'life', which I also consider myself doing.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks again :-)

Now you're on the right track. Because career coach and life coach are two entirely different things, they should have two entirely different pages, no matter which modifiers you choose to use (i.e. London) that make them more realistically rankable.

You can still make your home page life and career coach and describe how you do both, linking to those two other pages that are dedicated to the two separate things.

I also think having different pages for these keyword will help you rank for them separately. Also if you have a well structured content with rightly placed keywords including header tags of your focus kw's in the article body (H1, H2, H3 etc) you can bet to rank for your focus keywords and other keywords you did not initially thought of.

Why not try to rank different pages of your site for those variations?

      Thanks for your answer Chris.

To answer your question - the reason why I would prefer not to create one page and rank for 'life coach' and another one to rank for 'career coach', is because I can't think of what content for each site that would be original and make sense.

The fact is that I do 'Life & Career coaching', which is really about combining the two, life and career, something which most other coaches don't do. They do either or.

      Do you see my dilemma?

My content has the potential to be much more unique and powerful when I talk about 'life & career coaching', BUT the truth is hardly anyone ever googles that word combination.

Any further thoughts on what to do?

      Thanks a lot,

      Christine
