youtube niche question

Hi all, I'm planning on creating a cooking channel on youtube and have two questions:

1)
How do you know when a niche is too narrow?
In other words, everybody is talking about speaking to a very specific niche but I'm worried about going too narrow.
For example, let's say you want to make a cooking channel specifically about how to cook desserts with an instant pot, because instant pots are very popular right now etc and you start making content and in 1 year the instant pot falls out of fashion, then the entire channel is basically no longer relevant. If I make a channel just about cooking desserts it might not be narrow enough. How do you know when it's too broad or too narrow?

2)
What's the best way (paid or free) to research search trends on youtube and Pinterest?
For example if I wanted to find out what the most popular recipes currently are that are being searched for on youtube and Pinterest specifically.

Thanks guys.

  • Niching down is a good thing when you have no authority in a niche. You start out small because there is less competition. As you become an authority in the sub niche, it will make it easier to compete in the niche you are in because you already have some followers and credibility.

However, you have to have a demand in the sub niche. Some niches have a huge demand in the niche but some of the sub niches have to demand or traffic. You need to do some research to find this out. Use both YouTube and Google.

To answer you second question, i really don't know a paid way to research trends (unless its software you are talking about)

I, personally, would just do some research myself. Its free and easy.

Well, let's see there is a little tool called Google Trends which shows you what is trending on Google, and if you look around several good keyword tools. The problem with those is that while they tell you the search amounts, they don't tell you if people are buyers or tire kickers. So you have to find a site that will cover that, because without that, what good is the keyword research.

Say you wanted to do research for wool sweaters. IT tells you thousands have looked but how many have actually bought? You have to find a tool that works and gives you those demographics.

Good News: If instant pots go out of style you could always choose something else to add to your biz. That's the great thing about life, you always have choice!

Do a YT search for a variety of keyword phrases and look at the view counts of the top results. I like to see at least 3-5 videos with 50,000+ views in the past couple of years. Then ask yourself if you can create similar videos quickly, easily and for free (or cheap).

    For trends:

    1 Go to Google Trends:
    https://www.google.com/trends/

    2 Enter a keyword phrase..

3 From the "Web Search" drop-down menu, select "YouTube Search".

4 Scroll down a little bit and check out both the "Rising" and "Top" to get keyword ideas.

Well cooking niche its very good and related about cooking deserts i dont think you should wory that will decrease etc as thus its an evergreen niche and people will consume deserts all time . I consider its more important before researching best keywords etc ,its better to create value content and to be passionate about your niche

Youtube is easy to get to the top of the results.

Just bot your views with good bots and you will reach to the top.

One of the most obvious signs that your niche is uncomfortably tight is that you can name your customers. This happens a lot on blogs and websites. Although sites often have a small group of readers who leave more comments than others, when you see the same names turning up time after time in response to your articles - and almost no other names - that's a pretty good sign that your site has become a clique rather than an open club.

Ideally, a website will have a broad base of users and a few leading followers who shape the post-article debate. When your readers are few but dedicated, you'll struggle to expand and to make sales.

The same is true of businesses. Plenty of slightly nerdy entrepreneurs have paid their bills by opening comic stores; few have managed to do it though by opening comic stores dedicated solely to Spiderman.
