Is my brand name too generic?

It's a very cool name. My only problem with it, if I would think about using it, would be the fact that is not original. If I search Brix online I find:

- Brix - Degrees Brix is the sugar content of an aqueous solution.
- BRIX Wine Shop in Boston's South End and Financial District
- Brix Restaurant and Gardens in Napa
- BRIX -- Pinball Deluxe: Reloaded
- Welcome to Brix Wine Cafe

And many many many many many other random things.

If I were you, I would invent (or pay for some ideas) to get an original name. I would come up with a name, that when people look for it online finds my business in the main spot. At least, that's what I would do.

Further research - name may not be doable...multiple trademarks for for Brix and Brixx ... don't forget trademark searches when thinking up brand names.

"Brix: _________" is how I'd do it, with the blank being a subtitle specifying the niche or USP.

Obviously it should include the word "Lego" and inspire feelings of fun. Not sure I like "pre-owned"...gives me visions of a Lego piece in a kid's mouth and then me picking it up. Do you disinfect them? (Could be good for your USP, right there.)

Would it be possible to use the word "lego" in a secondary market where the brand does not profit? I somehow doubt it.

Can he use the word 'brix' whne there are many trademarks filed for that word? IANAL so don't know. I'd suggest coming up with several versions and then seeking legal advice before choosing a brand name.

I was wondering the same thing. Lego is tied in with some really heavy hitters. I'm curious to know how that would go.

Thanks all for the great input. To answer some questions, Brix came up on google as all of those random things which I thought was a good thing seeing as there was nothing really in my industry with the name Brix. As far as I know this is also how trademark law works, you just want to make sure that if you are using the same name nobody will get confused with a similar product. I.e. if someone sees us selling Brix or Brixx they won't assume that we are the same company as the wine company because that would be using their name for our gain. The way it looks to me there is nothing called Brix that we can be confused with.

On a similar note, we cannot use the word Lego in a slogan or anything like that as that would be directly using another company's name to build our brand. We can sell Lego products and get SEO for the search term Lego that way, but we can't directly build our business by exploiting Lego's name and reputation doing something that might trick customers into thinking we are a part of Lego the company. Being a company called Brix and talking about Legos but making it clear that we are Brix and not Lego is perfectly okay.

Perhaps expanding the definition to include interlocking toy products (but something less wordy) is an answer.

Hello, creating a great name is one of the hardest jobs ever.

What if you add another name to "brix" to make your name unique? e.g. ClickBrix or BensBrickBox

Personally, I prefer phonetic names, then you can register additional domains and usernames with alternate spellings.

When you find some names you like you can use Namechk to see what domains and Social Media accounts are available... then, register as many as you can.

Unless you already own brix.com, I would say "brix" is out. part of BRANDING is name association.. what sounds good, may probably be taken when it comes to web presence. A cool tool ( credit to Michael Meaney - Profit CoPilot ) to figure out if the domain as well as a ton of social properties are available https://namechk.com/

Something else to consider, is searcability. If you look at "Brix" as an example and do a search on Google you see there are 29,100,000 results for that term. he idea of BRAND is to be found.. and with that many competing pages, it could be done but probably not easily.

If you look at something like "lockbrix" does VERY nicely on namechk and the .com is available - and a quick search shows 30,000 results.. this is the type of word you are looking for..

I see. I definitely do like simple names though. Something that I noticed with namechk was that it said Brix was too short to be used as a name on most social media sites so if my company were called brix I would have to add something to it anyway. Would I be BrixOfficial on Twitter at that point or is there some creativity left there? Ie if I go with BrixToys on twitter with brix being the company name and toys being what we do would that be okay? At that point can I have my website be BrixToys.com even though the company is just Brix? Or do you recommend only ever using a name that has an available .com, facebook, twitter, snapchat, instagram, etc? At that point is would almost have to be just a made-up word rather than anything too coherent but I'm not necessarily against that.

I would suggest.. when ever you can you want your BRAND to match across as many platforms as possible... It #1 makes YOUR life easier.. and #2 it simply makes YOUR customers life easier when trying to find you.

And LockBrix at #1.. THAT is exactly what you are looking for.. far less work than having to start a whole SEO campaign with back linking to get your BRAND on page one in Google.

I ran a small monitoring campaign on my dashboard on the 3 keywords - "brix or brixx", "brickcraft" and "buildcraft". I'll share a few of the results here -

There were 2352 mentions for brix or brixx, 183 for buildcraft and 36 for brickcraft in the last year. I'll share some samples of these mentions here -
