Blogging or affiliate marketing

Hey all.

Question as to what I should start with first.

I know the 2 two favorite business models are blogging and affiliate marketing (often done together)to get started with a lower budget however, I wanted to know your thoughts on just blogging in a niche (father, parenting) first and then starting affiliate marketing in the mmo niche separately. It is doesn't look like those can be done together

You say you are starting with a lower budget. When you start your affiliate marketing how do you plan on getting traffic to your affiliate offers? Do you plan on starting an mmo blog after the parenting blog?

A blog is just a delivery channel, be it content or ads. Unless you can get a lot of traffic and monetize it with something like Adsense.

there would be plenty of affiliate products related to parenting etc, why can you not add those products to your parenting blog ?

You blog and each blog you will want to add an affiliate link. If you don't do this then you can't make any money.

There are plenty of PARENTING affiliate programs on a place like Clickbank.

Blogging and affiliate marketing are kind of apples and oranges.

A blog is just a delivery channel, be it content or ads. Which you would still need something to market to make money. Unless you can get a lot of traffic and monetize it with something like Adsense.

Where affiliate marketing is really just products/services that you can market on a commission basis. But you still need a way to advertise products/services.

    Hi jfrombk

I know the exact feeling you're having, not sure what niche to choose.

    So ask yourself these questions

What niche am I most passionate about?
What niche can I see myself writing about daily for the next couple of years?

Whichever niche you choose you want to build your online business into a long term sustainable business. And If you're very passionate about the topic you're far more likely to succeed because you'll be having fun while writing/blogging/marketing the topic. Just remember to do your research on what problems each niche audience is having and which products are available out there to promote as an affiliate that solves those problems. This also opens the gate to potentially creating your own products to help your audience.

Focus on building and growing one business at a time. Make one successful and then focus on the next.

This helps you avoid getting side-tracked.

    Good-luck

    Mozie

    Hello all.

Thank you all for your responses. I guess the parenting niche is something I am very passionate about and it doesn't seem like there are products that would fit me selling right away. Like in my head it kinda seems silly tho I know that probably sounds silly

Blogging is a part of Affiliate Marketing, it is a source of directing traffic to your money site or affiliate program. The 2 works hand in hand.

You can connect blogging and affiliate marketing, but don't rely just on your blog to be successful in AM. It's a source of traffic for your product/service, but when you're starting out, there will be very little traffic unless you are a skilled writer with a great product that is directly related to your blog.

You can draw a parallel for MMO and parenting. In my opinion, they do go hand in hand. Your target audience would be parents who want to spend more time with their children at home. They need another source of income that doesn't require them to be outside of the house, working for someone else. They need to learn how to make money online...and that's where your blog connects the product/service you're offering to do that.

The Parenting Blog should be your first choice since you have a passion for the niche. Affiliate marketing in the MMO niche can help monetize the blog once you establish the blog. It's an excellent synergy since more and more people are looking to make money at home and generate a second or passive income source. Good luck.

You can do them both. Affiliate marketing is an ideal lifestyle - if:

    1) You know how to generate large amounts of low commission sales for free

    2) You're promoting a $100-$1000+ commission product

    3) You get paid every month for the lifetime of the customer you helped generate

If you want to get into the parenting niche, first make sure that there's a desire for information of it in the marketplace - and if there is, and there's multiple ways to reach these prospects... go for it.

Consider also using pseudonyms for either the parenting blog or mmo affiliate programs. For example, I market in many widely disparate and unrelated niches simultaneously using more than 30 different personas and aliases.

You can do these simultaneously. If your niche is parenting, look for a high quality parenting affiliate program on Clickbank or some other platform.

Then start writing unique articles on your blog about parenting and use your affiliate link in the articles to refer people to the affiliate program.

Also, be sure to choose a domain name that includes your keyword.

You can do that together. In fact, the parenting market is a good place to start with your MMO niche. Families with full-time parents are always looking for ways to make extra money. You can blog about both because parents are often concerned how having an affiliate or online business can affect their family life. Like,
    • Will I have enough time for my kids?
    • How to I make time for my affiliate marketing business?
    • Do I need a home office to do this?
    • Where can I find affiliates that suits my lifestyle?

Start blogging and do not add any affiliate products until you have developed a following. Once your getting between 500 and 1000 views per day and the traffic is good then go ahead and add a opt in form and or some banners for affiliate offers.

    Jeff..

What's your END goal with either one?

Do you want to create a parenting blog that becomes an outlet for your writing?

Do you want to mostly earn money?

Do you want to earn money WITH your parenting blog?

You seem to want to tie in 2 different niches... but it's absolutely possible
you can do both (earn money, write passionately) in either niche.

Trust me, there's some VERY obsolete niches out there... making people
a killing, and you'd never guess others would buy stuff in that niche.

I know someone who just runs a Facebook group on Hashimoto's disease...
she started it out of a passion. Heck, I couldn't even spell it at first, let alone know
    what it was.

And yet, she does multiple millions a year, simply writing about it and helping
    others.

I can almost certainly guarantee you'd find some aff programs in the parenting/fathering
    niche.

But again, you'd want to figure out what your end goal is... your point B.

Then, just work backwards and put the steps in place to go from A to B.

Anything CAN be done... it's just a matter of starting, finding what's working,
    and tweaking from there.

The only way to monetize and make money from ANY site or blog is to get
eyeballs first... then monetize it later.

So, start writing and see where it leads :-)

It will be a better idea if you focus on one niche until you're successful enough, then introduce another. My advise will be to invest in yourself and blog, build traffic and build your list as well, then introduce affiliate marketing, among other blog monetisation methods.

Yes buddy, definitely separate the 2 niches. Far better approach so each following is targeted.

Begin blogging in the father-parenting niche.

Being affiliate marketing in the MMO niche.

    Do not cross the streams.

One question: do you have the time and energy to give to both ventures, to make each one succeed? People who give 100% energy to parental blogging will outshine you. People who give 100% energy to MMO affiliate marketing will outshine you. Something to think about.

      Do not cross the streams.
      Hey Ryan,

I know you're a blogging expert, so I'd like a little elaboration here if you don't mind. I made a recommendation to connect the two. Use blogging to drive traffic to a relevant MMO affiliate product. See my rationale in my earlier comment.

One question: do you have the time and energy to give to both ventures, to make each one succeed? People who give 100% energy to parental blogging will outshine you. People who give 100% energy to MMO affiliate marketing will outshine you. Something to think about.
I do agree with you on spreading oneself too thin on two major projects like this, and the OP will be competing against those who are all in on one venture. Not easy. But again, wondering why you're against crossing streams as I see they can be directly related and feed each other.

  • Hi Jfrombk,

There are several options for getting involved with affiliate marketing.

You can set up a Blog or set up a Website to promote the merchants products and services by writing product reviews or publishing their offers etc and adding your affiliate tracking link.

Also, you can monetise your social media presence in the same way as above and adding your tracking link.

The other alternative is to run PPC campaigns in Google or Bing and promoting the merchants promotions and offers and directing the traffic directly to them (No need to set up a website)

    Good Luck!

For me, if I'm doing this as a business and a legit revenue generator, I would focus on exactly how you are going to make money -- your specific revenue generators and then how you will position the sales.

I LOVE the father parenting idea and just as a hobby, that's a no brainer especially if you have a passion for it.

The question I would ask is if this is a business, how will that generate revenue.

In 2010 I read all these 'authorities' saying start blogging and you'll figure out a revenue stream... the focus was on writing and they burned out because they didn't see any traffic or revenue.

I would put the focus on your offer and what someone will be willing to pay you for.

Regarding affiliate... check out what Pat Flynn does. He is basically all affiliate. It's all about networking, and increasing overall numbers to play the ratios. It can be lucrative, but it can also be really difficult to stick with because the affiliate market is over saturated.

Again, if you're just thinking a hobby, man, just have fun and don't worry about any of it. If you're thinking a business, begin with the end in mind.
