Moving to different states with a dba

Hi everyone. I registered a dba(doing business as) name in Buffalo back in like 2006 and also got a number for collecting sales tax, a TF and then 7 digits. This was all back in Buffalo over 10 years ago. Since then I lived in North Carolina for 7 years, and now am currently living in Maine. Would that same dba name and sales tax # still apply after all this time and switching states, or would I need to get new ones? If anyone knows about these things I would greatly appreciate letting me know. Thank you.

Let me ask you this....if I and a bunch of other members here say 'no problem - you don't need to get anything'....do you assume that is correct?
Would it matter that everyone answering would be in a different or a different country?...or that most would be guessing?

Sales tax is usually state related...there is federal tax id and most states also have tax ID's.....so of course you need new ones when you change states.

As for d/b/a - what you need depends on how your business is set up (corp, LLC, sole proprietorship, etc).

Basically, any time you move to a different city or state - you need to check the laws so you are in compliance. If you open a business acct in your new location, chances are the bank you use can advise you on d/b/a requirements. At any rate, use google to find local and state sites that provide small business legal info in your new location.

It sounds like if I'm going to start doing business again I will need to get a new tax ID, since I'm in a different state. And I'm not sure if I can just keep using the same dba name I was before. I guess can ask them when I see about the tax ID. Thank you.

You can use the same dba name you just have to register it in the state you now reside. You should talk to an accountant on this but you should make sure you have closed your business officially in NY, it is usually done when you file your final taxes in that state. But again, this is not advice on what to do it is advice for your to talk to a tax professional
