Brand new to SEO? Start here...
It is MUCH easier to rank in just about any other platform than it is in Google. It's easier to rank in Amazon's search than on Google. It's easier to rank in Youtube's search than it is on Google and it's easier to rank in Etsy search than it is on Google.
This does NOT mean it's easy to rank on these other sites, only that it's EASIER. Big difference. There's less competition, the competition isn't quite as skilled and there are generally no off-page/linking factors to worry about.
Here's basically how these other sites' search results work and they're actually fairly similar. At first, keyword relevancy is very important and picking good keywords and on-page SEO is essential. Then they'll test their search results based on engagement. Not the easy to fake things such as "likes", but with Youtube things like view time...and on Amazon and Etsy things like clicks and sales.
For sites like Amazon and Etsy, the more a listing sells the more money THEY make. They'd be dumb not to rank the best selling products the highest. And it's a pretty good indicator of relevancy too.
It's a multi-step thought process. You have to rank first with keyword relevancy and then you have to sell. There's other factors like how fast you ship a product, customer service, your account history with the site, etc., that can make it tougher for newbies.
There's another benefit of having listings on these other sites, and that's ranking your product listings in Google. Google tends to love sites like Youtube, Etsy, Amazon and others. In other words, it will probably be much easier to rank your product page on Amazon in Google than your pages on your own site.
But like most things in life, there's a trade off. First you're building links to a site you don't own like Amazon, who could close your account at any time without notice. Also, you're trying to rank a page with other competitors showing on your own product pages. You can't really collect email addresses, etc. And you have to pay to be on some platforms.
On the other hand, you have a double dose of SEO. You can rank a product in Amazon's own search results and you can rank the same product page in Google's search, both are probably a lot easier (not easy) than ranking pages on your own site in Google.
Another plus is people on sites like Amazon, Etsy, eBay and others are BUYERS. They are actively shopping and spending, not sharing memes of sleeping cats. A little bit of traffic can go a lot farther...and there's a built-in trust factor with customers when selling on these sites.
There are a number of products you can sell to create listings for SEO. A site like Printful offers 200+ "print on demand" products like mugs, towels, curtains, etc. They will hook up to sites like Etsy and Amazon and automate printing and shipping your orders for you automatically. You just need to create designs and upload and list them.
The point is, if you can't rank in these other sites' search engines you probably can't rank on Google. Consider picking another platform for your first SEO success and focus on it, researching everything you can about it. There's a lot of money being made from SEO that has nothing to do with Google.
