It is a stand-alone web-page. Its purpose depends on you.

Unlike regular web pages, a landing page has one purpose only (i.e., visitors can do only one thing there, or leave).

    Possible marketing purposes:
    collect email addresses
    book appointments
    buy a coaching program, etc.

Here's the first thing you would've seen had you simply Googled "What is a landing page?"

In online marketing, a landing page, sometimes known as a "lead capture page", "static page", or a "destination page", is a single web page that appears in response to clicking on a search engine optimized search result, marketing promotion, marketing email, or an online advertisement.

I've been promoting CPA offers for19 years.

A landing page is just a page that traffic is driven to. However, the page can be for different reasons.

If you are promoting an offer, you would typically first drive traffic to a squeeze page and collect users email addresses. Which after collecting their email would redirect them to the offer's landing page. The reason being is most people don't convert the first time they visit the offers landing page. By collecting their email address you can follow up and promote additional offers at little additional cost. This is key if you want to be successful promoting CPA offers.

In addition to a squeeze page (lead capture page) and the actual landing page of the offer you are promoting, you may (depending on the offer) send them to a presell page. Which would provide additional information that's not found on the offers landing page, as a means to do as the page name implies, presell them on the offer.

    Hope that helps.

A landing page is a static page that is designed to convert visitors into leads which means getting them to define a call to action.

    Scooby,

I have a somewhat different perspective than most as I've been a copywriter for over 20 years, interviewed by Dan Kennedy's company, and a sales trainer.

A landing page from my point of view is not about "getting an opt in."

You don't want crap prospects who are nowhere near a fit for the product or service offered.

Sure, the page has a small job: to let IN those people who * are * a match for the offer.

What bait you use to do that--success stories, an email series, a video course, pdf report or whatever--well, that's part of Conversion. And we'll get back to that in a moment.

But to start with, you've got Traffic to contend with.

Internet Marketing--all marketing, in fact--is about only two things: Traffic and Conversion.

People come to the page from SOMEWHERE. That's Traffic.

And that Traffic source has a certain quality level... a match or lack thereof to your offer.

Traffic source quality is THE most important factor here--more than anything on the page, more than your immediate opt in offer, more than the copy.

People will put up with "ugly" pages to get what they want...provided you've matched up your message with them well enough, and there were actually people who were interested in the offer in your traffic source in the first place.

So in short: get the wrong people and it won't matter how great your landing page is.

Get the right people and your page can be a bit forgiving.

Spend your effort on finding a high quality traffic source.

    Now the second part.

    Conversion.

    What the page does.

If your page copy doesn't at all match up with what the traffic source was told BEFORE it got there, then those people will bolt.

The mismatch will frighten them off.

Thus, the purpose of the landing page is not to scoop all and sundry into the hopper...but rather to SORT the wrong people OUT and the right people IN. And you hope, plan, and strive for a traffic source with a high proportion of the right people.

You can set targets for Traffic and Conversion, and work towards them. Improve on them once you've got a baseline of performance.

That right there is far beyond where most Warriors get.

What do marketers recommend for building landing pages that are not monthly/recurring billed.
    Something wordpress based preferably.

to my mind and feeling too, the "culture" of landing pages, a/k/a one-page-site, is dying: a sign of one-day company, or (often) no company at all, lack of contact data, absence of real people contacts only endless happy faces from the stock, yesterday registered domain, and a ton of fake testimonials; does it really work I wonder??

in my humble opinion better spend time on something more solid, you will burry same amount of time but for the bigger thing, that's how development work, but in the end all appears more reliable to the reader/visitor... yet the very other thing is "the page (one of many) where they do land to", the very different story.

Landing pages are often linked to social media, e-mail campaigns or search engine marketing campaigns in order to enhance the effectiveness of the advertisements. The general goal of a landing page is to convert site visitors into sale or leads

A landing page is a page on your site that is designed to convert visitors into leads. A landing page is different from other pages in that it follows both of these criteria: It has a form that allows you to capture a visitors information in exchange for a desired offer.

A Landing page is a one page website. It's function is to offer a small bribery known as a Free Gift ( an Audio, Video or a PDF Report) in exchange of the site visitors to give out their email addresses . With a purpose of building an email list. A landing page can lead the visitors straight to the Thank you page, consisting of a link that leads to the free gift or straight to an affiliate offer.
