Public relations for link-building?

I come from a PR background and am aware that press releases are a good way to generate short term traffic and possibly even a backlink from a big publication. Is PR still effective for SEO and link building in general?

Sidenote: I know that SEO seems like a sinking ship. What are some of your pivots away from SEO? Social, email, etc.?

  • yes PR and guest-blogging are goldmines from SEO standpoint.
  • How do you know SEO is a sinking ship?

I am asking because I get a lot of clients for my clients through SEO.

  • After it sinks how will one find things online? Telepathy?

  • SEO will never die as long as Search Engines exist. That's usually what people say to promote their paid training. LOL.

SEO is alive and well. I feel that PR is more important than ever. Press Releases are only used these days for the backlink because with the internet everything is real time essentially. Why would I wait for a Press Release when it's normally on FB within minutes. Think of PR as it's original intention. Public Relations. Use it to build a social relationship with your audience through social media. That's how PR can really come into play with an SEO campaign. The social interactions don't provide "THE" SEO but they play a key role in Google ranking your site. Does that make sense?

    • @socialbacklink your website is literally trying to sell a course. LOL
  • That's so far from the truth. Some of the highest quality traffic is organic (from the search engines). When people are actively searching for a solution to a problem, they are more likely to purchase. On social media sites, the majority of people are there to socialize or for entertainment purposes. So, they are more of a difficult sell. You have to grab their attention, pinpoint their problem, and show them how your product/service can solve it.

As long as there are websites, SEO will never be a sinking ship. It's too valuable.

  • Google is starting to monopolize SERPs with their own syndicated content. If you guys don't see the significance of that, there is no need to discuss. Google was even sued for copying and reusing content from a song lyrics site as their own. (they used a font tag of sorts to prove it was their content)

Google's aim is to monopolize search. SEO as a practice is sinking. Sinking. Meaning it is currently on the downward trajectory. You will still get results, clients, and make money using it but you can not deny it is sinking.
  • When you use search engine optimization the correct way, it will generate alot of high quality FREE traffic.

SEO can't be sinking, it helps you build authority in your niche
