12 months to launch - what would you do?

Hi Gang,

Little background; longtime member, but have never really committed to building business online. I've got a great day job and have done online stuff as a hobby. I've built a handful of websites since 1999 and have had some of them above the fold on page 1, but after a glitch on my last site I archived the posts and took it down. I also run an industry specific facebook group that is the largest of its type in its space, with over 11k members. But I've never really monetized any of it.

I live in the US on a work visa that doesn't allow me to earn any money except for my current employer. I'm working on a green card though so would like to spend this time putting things in place so that I can launch a side business when that comes through. I'd like to be in a position to make my first sale on the same day I get the GC.

So; what would you focus on if you had 12 months to prepare?

    Done! Thank you.

I'm also going through Expert Secrets by Russel Brunson, which I had ordered earlier based on a review in the offline marketing section.

I took some years off from internet marketing; at that time I was doing a lot of content but didn't have a plan for the back end so ended up burning out. I'm going to put a lot more focus in this time round.

Consider yourself corrected! Some visas yes, some no, and the one I'm on definitely not.

I'm about halfway through Launch and it makes a lot of sense. I like it so far and the process is well laid out. The trouble now is... what product to sell?

I've got a few ideas that I'd love some feedback on:

      1. Develop a website and go out as an independent business consultant. I would make a program / coaching product related to streamlining your business processes. This is kind of what I do now but for somebody else.

      2. I run a Facebook group with over 11k members, related to the marine industry. I could set something up to monetize this but am not sure what kind of problem I could help them solve, except that the market sucks and nobody is hiring.

      3. Set something up to resell someone elses products.

I'm open to other suggestions. What's everyone doing these days?

It doesn't matter what "everyone is doing", it matters what YOU are doing. And I'm not saying that to be a dick... you will understand more - just keep reading.

Ask yourself one question... WHY? Why would you do this? Me being a person that sells services and stuff could very clearly answer this question. Why do I build websites? #1 I love doing it, #2 I love the process of developing a "thing" that in the end is of benefit to the person or business I have built it for. #3 I love the artistic aspect of creating web pages... they are art to me.

Why do I sell stuff on eBay? #1 first and formost I love selling - love it - love it - love it. Love the whole process of it. #2 I find great amounts of satisfaction in finding things at thrift stores that people literally gave away and I sell it to people that absolutely want it. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

So if you can answer: WHY? then you might be onto something. Notice no where in my reasons is money one of the things listed. I build websites for free - granted not every one, but I do my share of pro bono work ( and for those of you reading this - I find you, you don't find me, when it comes to free work - so don't ask )

You don't trip onto 11,000 members on a facebook group just because. YOU are either being way overly humble ( which I suspect ) or you dont see the value in what it is you have given ( I suspect this as well )

There is probably an obvious reason why you would start a Marine facebook group. - So yes, I am assuming you can answer the WHY here - AND you have done so without financial return - its starting to come together, are you feeling it?

Look at your #2 "not sure what kind of problem I could help them solve, except that the market sucks and nobody is hiring." And your #1 is? Business sucks, and streamlining business process do what? I would suggest increased efficiency would increase profits no? I would start dropping bits of efficiency knowledge in your facebook group

Again with #1 you have a year before you can get paid by anyone else...i suspect that after that time, you have to stay with your current employer for an amount of time... so much of this needs to be a side hustle.

In that years time because you cant be paid, I would create a site that is about you... explain like you have here your particular circumstances. And offer your services for free during your off hours for say a 1 month period. Be very transparent and clear in your situation it can only work in your favor.

In this time you are going to do a few things #1 you will get hands on experience in the processes you will need to follow to provide value to a business. #2 by taking on a business a month, you could in a years time have 12 case studies showing how your process in creating efficiency have increased profits.

THIS becomes the PROOF - on the other side of the green card that shows your knowledge and experience in helping companies streamline to a leaner meaner profitable business.

Enter the 11K Facebook followers that you have been dripping tips and tricks in efficiency for their Marine business - and then point them to your updated website that now includes the 12 business case studies - and that you are for hire to do the same for their business.

        Hope that helps!

That does help, thanks. It's a similar idea to what I was thinking, but I hadn't considered doing some pro bono work to build a list of references and to figure out that workflow.

Why do I want to do this? To move from being an employee to an owner. I get paid well to work for other people but I'd like to work for myself.
