Need advice to to identify a domain registrar

(Please move thread if wrong place to post - I couldn't find a relevant sub domain.)
I'm trying to help a client.
They registered a domain 10+ years ago.
They can't remember where they registered the domain.

A whois search says the domain is registered with register.com.
Trying to access the domain through register.com tells us there is no account for the domain.

I'm guessing an agent/affiliate of the domain was used to register.

Can anyone suggest where I can to get help?
register.com are of no help.

I don't want to give the domain name itself in public.

As it stands, ten years is the maximum period you can register a domain for, so assuming your client hasn't renewed since the original registration, it would now be expired anyway. If they still want the name, you can try asking whether it's available for purchase.

There is a ( Whois dot com) database that allows you to identify the domain name owner, and all information. but I'm not sure if this is your question.
