Looking for a creative way to make money online

Hi all!

Forgive me if this is the wrong section to post this, but I just recently joined the forum and have been racking my brain trying to figure out the most profitable way to use my technical skills to make good money online. I work a full-time job building/coding (Python, Bash, etc) systems and processes, but I can't seem to be able to come up with good ideas to build a profitable business model using those skills. I would love to replace my full-time job, at some point.

Also, clearly, writing isn't my strong suit haha.

I appreciate any advice I get, thanks!

You are the perfect affiliate marketer.
    Setup some websites, place some
affiliate links and you should be raking
it in, in no time. Let me know how it
    goes.

Aside from your technical/programming skills, are you well versed at creating websites? Writing content? Making video content perhaps (if you don't like or enjoy writing)? Are you familiar and/or have some experience with SEO? ..or running paid advertising campaigns?

Affiliate marketing is a good way to go, but be prepare to dedicate a lot of time to all those different activities mentioned above. This can potentially be a full-time gig... *but* only after a lot of hard work, perhaps years!

Good luck. I'm new here but I can see there's a lot of helpful/useful info in this or other forums.

The affiliate marketing niche as an example is mostly done in a very simple and non technical way which means that I don't think that you can use your skills as a real advantage over everyone else.
However you can build great websites/ landing pages.
Apart from this maybe you can also be helpful for internet marketers who launch products if they need help with technical questions.

Another option is that you just go to Fiverr and start a freelancing business. Just take a look what others are offering within your field and get started. (but thats a long term business)

This is great information! My biggest worry with affiliate marketing is that others could easily outpace me, because their sales skills would override my technical skills (at least for now), which is why I didn't really consider it like you said.

Building websites and pages comes very easy to me, so like you said, maybe I should try to approach people who struggle in that area? Do you have any tips on where people would look for that kind of help?

I don't mind hustling for the long term, though I would like to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later.

        Thanks for the advice!

Have you thought of teaching the technical skills you have ? Putting out youtube videos showing people how to code, or else put together a program on teachable. You would have to learn how to market yourself to make sales on those platforms.

I have actually thought about this. I know technical people usually end up making Udemy or YouTube videos regarding these things. I think my biggest worry was that, if it's already done, why would they buy/view my tutorials?

You're right though, I need to improve on my selling ability to market how my stuff could be better.

      Thanks for the input!

It shows that you're already ahead of the pack by asking this question. Most never do.. even people who have been involved in business or even marketing for that matter for years.

Since you've considered selling courses already, your unique feature could be to teach in more detail about an aspect of coding that other courses haven't explored, or it could be your teaching style, forms of media used, follow up support etc or many more things.

The key is to match your unique feature with what your customers want or need. I would suggest looking through the reviews on other courses, particularly the three star reviews and below and research if there's a trend in the reviewer's complaints.

When I was selling kindle books on Amazon I started with recipe books because I love cooking. By reading through some current listings I discovered that the biggest complaints of self-published books in this niche were that the books were printed in black and white, didn't use photos, and had difficult recipes.. so I called my books Simple Color Cookbooks to stand out in a crowded niche of self-published authors.

You can do the same with your courses.. or anything else.

Damn that's some solid advice, I didn't think to do that.

Now that you mentioned all of this, it got me thinking about how I was unable to find technical info on a project I was working on last week. I had to stitch together pieces of info and mold it to fit my needs. So, if I was searching for that kind of info, maybe there is someone else searching for that kind of info too? And I could get in front of that.

I also really like the reviews research, I'm going to get going on that.

Thanks again, this is really amazing info!

I would suggest learning more skills such as marketing and sales. I'd use them together with your technical expertise to create a unique offer, depends on what sort you'd like to do and are capable of doing.

This advice imo will yield great long-term results. You have a unique building block that, combined with other parts of the internet marketing "stack", would make for a very compelling (and well compensated) combination of skills.

Another option is that you just go to Fiverr and start a freelancing business
You could start to cultivate the "IM skill stack" through this method as well ... taking gigs on Fiverr and Upwork that allow you to do some developing whilst, for example gaining some (low risk) experience in copywriting

    • Profile picture of the author gigapothem
That's how I was trying to angle it, as a unique skill that I feel isn't common in the IM arena. From what it sounds like, I still need to fill in those main building blocks, thank you!

I've recently created my profile on Upwork and will do Fiverr next. I'm going to hit these markets up.

      Thank you!

Cool! There's some great (and free) info out there on WF and elsewhere on how to strategically position yourself to get gigs on platforms like Upwork (Danny Marguiles (sp?) comes to mind among others) ... may be worth checking some of that out as well if you've not already...

        Thank you!
The most valuable experience you'll learn from these platforms I think is this:

If you don't provide a unique feature to your service, it becomes a race to the bottom and all about price, competing against people in the third world who will work for 3-5 dollars an hour. That's what most people experience on these platforms.

In saying that, there are also many very well-paid freelancers who get paid 10-20x more than the $5 an hour crowd.. even if their service is not that much better. They did need to work their way up with cheap jobs to get started, but once their reputation was established, they pivoted their services to towards clients who pay more, and learned how to sell to that market.

I have one friend who writes for 2c per word, and another who writes for a dollar per word. Both are competent writers, and the person who gets paid 96 cents more per word isn't fifty times better at what they do. The person earning more is just singing a different song to a different type of client.

        I hope that helps someone.

You are working as a full time coder for a company, right? That company is certainly making money by using your skills Can you think any idea they are missing which you can take advantage of and build your business around that? In this way you wont have to struggle much to find the customers as you will already be familiar with the market.

One of my friends had a job as hotel boy. Hotel guests often needed a laundry service. Few guests were in a so hurry that they needed clean clothes with 3-4 hrs. Hotel had a contract with a laundry company but it used to take min 8-10 hrs before clothes are ready. He got that idea and started a small laundry shop nearby hotel and promised to provide the urgent service. He got customers at the very first day of starting his business.

The best approach to start anything is to find the TARGET first. To whom you wanna reach, what are their basic problems and how you can solve them. Be different, start small, learn on the way and expand later....

Haha, they definitely are, I can tell you that!

So far, in thinking about it, I can find about 3 or 4 things that we outsource/use a vendor for that I could build myself and probably even charge a decent amount for. I'm sure if I keep looking I'll find voids that I can fill.

I have to get into that frame of mind, similar to what Matthew North was saying, where I have to put myself where the needs of the customer/target are. What would be the point of building a product that nobody wanted, even if it's the best?

As noted in the prior post...

While you're building your online business, you can bring in some extra cash by offering your services on Fiverr.com. There is an enormous market for specialized coding and web dev skills.

And don't be misled by the $5 price - most providers offer premium services that can range from $50 USD to $1,000 USD or more.

I think I've hired over 50 different web developers and coders from there over the last ten years. I'm pretty good at web dev, myself, but some things, I just can't figure out.

You should start off doing $5 and $10 gigs, just to get some reviews. But as soon as you have like 20 top reviews, you can then start charging reasonable, premium, prices.

Freelancer.com is another great platform for this.

Looking for a creative way to make money online
Are yiu sure you are looking for a creative way to make money online or are you just looking for ways to make money online? There is a difference!

The title you created is about creativity, yet no where in your post do you mention anything about creativity.

You are in the online coding industry, you say you work as an online coder, yet you do not know how to find an online job?

I am a fisherman and know when someone is fishing, haha.

    Begin a technical blog.

Here is how you can make money through traffic on your blog-
The best way to get traffic while logging is to use the right focus keywords
The second is to arrange these keywords in your content in the most natural manner so that they don't look forced
The next step is to make your content speak to your audience. most importantly it should be well-rounded in comparison to other content in your niche.
Fourth is to involve a call to action (if you wish like a subscribe button, redirection)
Fifth step is to indulge your audience
final step is to mindfully market your blog.
