Diversifying Your Traffic Sources Beyond SEO

Initially building your brand off the shoulders of Google isn't a wrong move.

I've done it countless times. But at some point, it's wise to expand beyond SEO.

Building up other traffic sources makes the asset you're creating more valuable because it's more resilient. (And ironically enough, it helps your SEO, too.)

At some point, that popular spyware app better known as Tiktok may be banned. It has already been banned in India last month.

If this happens in the USA, massive followings of millions upon millions may be turned to dust.

There is a serious danger of over-reliance on one single source of traffic. Google has wiped out entire businesses from the face of the planet simply because organic was the only channel they focused on.

As a starting point for brainstorming, your demographic might already be telling you where to start: Look at Google Analytics referral data and ask yourself how you can boost those #s and if any of those sites are worthwhile.

You are absolutely right. Depending on one source of traffic is a recipe for disaster. Getting on multiple platforms sharing your content natively and creatively is one of the best ways to diversify traffic.

I completely agree. Over-reliance on any single source of traffic/influence is incredibly risky...the exception of course is your own domain/website and your email marketing list. You own those. No one is EVER going to take those away.

In addition, social networks (especially IG and FB) tend to do the following. Their algorithm rewards users with lots of followers in the beginning because every post (and hashtag) has lots of "reach". Every post gets shown to a lot of people. But over time, the "reach" gets throttled deliberately. The posts are not shown to as many people. So eventually, you begin to pay to "boost" your posts in order to get the same reach.

Bottom line, you are completely at the mercy of the service provider.

I'm not saying don't do it. I'm just saying we need to diversify.

Yes, you are right, and thanks for discussing this point here. We as digital marketers should take lessons from the events happening around us. Not only banning a platform may impact the traffic source, but when a platform changes its algorithm, the entire mathematical equation of traffic from that source changes (example FB and Google in the past). Diversification of traffic source will take care of both the above issues and help to balance the traffic under such changes.

That is what each and everyone tries in the beginning especially if you don't have the funds for promotion. What could be the best way to get some quality backlinks.

I suggest that to promote a site online one should be very choosy to finalize the SEO friendly and quality directories. You are right with the list you have provided and if you know any simple method to use the list to get the maximum, please let us know.

It is important never to put all your eggs in one basket. Depending on SEO as your only marketing platform is not a good idea. Google works on an ever changing and evolving algorithm, one day you are ranked number 1 for keyword the next week you are lost at sea. Important to combine SEO with PPC Advertising like YouTube Ads, Reddit Ads, Quora Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Instagram Ads, Facebook Ads. Email Marketing and Text Messaging Marketing. Also never forget about the original marketing platform Offline Marketing. If you diversify your Internet Marketing Advertising budget you will build a solid foundation for success.

It's always good to know more about different strategies to get traffic, however there is also a high risk involved here, because if you try to get traffic in multiple different ways you can start feeling overwhelmed quickly, so instead of doing one strategy very good and successfully you start doing multiple things in an average way with less results.

Especially for newbies this is very dangerous.
I know this because I've been there..

You hit the nail on the head about Google Analytics. Analyzing the performance reports over time tells a story about a company's strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.

I work in a traffic (marketing/ads) industry for few years and I can tell you, YOU HAVE TO DIVERSIFY!

Absolutely right, google keeps changing their algorithms and which is very difficult to find out, but in a way, it is good for having quality content on the net and for guys who don't have big money for promoting their sites.
