Do you have any advice for beginners in digital marketing?

Hi all! I am a Sociology student and wish to know more about digital marketing. I developed my interests in digital marketing in one of me social media Sociology course and believed it a fascinating field! I am currently taking some marketing courses from Coursera and Udemy to learn some basic theories (I found it quite helpful). However, I am unsure of what to do next. Could you provide some advice for me? Are there any digital skills I need? I have known something like SEO, Google analytics. It would be appreciated if you can just comment a few words! Thank you so much!

    Welcome to the forum!
It's hard to give you an advice for your question because you seem to have no clue yourself what exactly it is that you want to do.
What do you want to sell?
Do you want to have a blog or not?
Which social media platform do you like most to promote whatever it is that you're selling?
Do you want to sell your own products or do you want to be an affiliate for something?
What is your favorite niche to be in?
    What are you passionate about?

I guess these are some questions you should figure out first to get a step further

    Welcome to the forum.

The skills you will need will depend on which way you want to go. There are many, many ways.

And on what you want to build. If you're after building a business, and in my opinion, that's the best way to go, you'd need to know how to set up a business... a book like the E-myth Revisited by Gerber is a great intro.

Even if all you want to do is have a job, you'd benefit from learning about selling, marketing and increasing conversions.

I suggest Dan Kennedy's the Ultimate Marketing book and his The Ultimate Sales Letter to start with.

You'll need to know about how to automate what you create (automation will mean slightly different things, depending on what you end up doing, but the goal is to put systems in place so you do not have to do again and again some things... one of the most obvious one being autoresponders.

To get better responses, you need to give a bit more info about what you know and what you want to accomplish.

    Welcome.

    Good advice above.

In addition, I'd add to spend some time browsing the forum. There are literally thousands of posts talking about every aspect of marketing and online business. That may help you figure out the direction you want to go.

Secondly, I'd suggest getting started. Yes, before you even know what you want to do or know what to do. Doing is the best way to learn in this case.

You can create a free blog on Wordpress.com, for example. Get familiar with it. Create some sample posts about your life or job or business or hobbies. Remember, you are just learning at this point so it really doesn't matter if they are good or bad.

Practice some SEO techniques on those posts since you know a little about that. Put your knowledge into practice.

Those two things, browsing the forum and setting up a free blog, can help you no matter what direction you go.

    Good luck.

    Mark

PS Besides just browsing, stay active on the forum. Many people fail because they come and ask a question and then they disappear. Stick around and learn from others and share what you are learning too.

Welcome - and good on you for having the initiative to join WF at this early stage of your marketing journey.

In addition to echoing the wise advice above, I'd suggest 2 things: 1) focusing more on fundamentals than tactics-of-the-moment (reading the 'greats' - Dan Kennedy, Bob Bly, Ken McCarthy are a few of my personal favorites there - is a great way to do this), 2) maintaining a strong bias toward ACTION (you'll never have complete information, and there will always be more 'analysis to do' ... far better to just start doing things (or at least the first few steps), however imperfectly, to figure out whether something is feasible and viable.)

If you post and then leave the forum 2 minutes later - helps if you come back to read the answers....just saying....

Hi there, there are some other great resources for courses.
Google has a Digital Marketing course complete with Certification.
Shaw academy offers some great courses and I think you can get a month free.
    HubSpot offers some great training.
LinkedIn offers a wide range of courses to paid members.
If you are using Thrive Themes, they have a number of courses.
LightningWP is a source for some WordPress training.
I would also suggest starting a project and setting things up and see where your gaps are.

People get distracted by shiny objects marketed to them. They end up believing these things are necessary. But in fact they are not.

There's no such thing as a 'business in a box'. Watch carefully. You only need two things to make money: traffic and conversion. Views to your offer, and a way to turn some of those views into buyers.

    That's it.

When looking at magic bullets/shiny objects/businesses in a box, try to see where this thing being offered to you fits in. Does it fit into the category of traffic? or conversion? And what is missing?

You as an individual must learn to succeed at at least ONE way of driving traffic, and at least ONE way of effecting conversion.

Where people fail is in a) not understanding any of this, despite the simplicity of the message, and b) branching out too wide, getting on the bandwagon of the week, and trying to become effective at every method of traffic & conversion that comes along. You can't. I can't.

You may have heard the phrase "pick your battles". It applies here.

Start with your own personal website or pet project, and then work to get your site ranking. You can play around with different techniques and get hands-on experience without having any real stakes while you learn.

Well I would suggest to study a marketing business model which doesn't "trade your time". Also very important to have a mentor or a coach who has done it previously. So he/she can guide you through a process. Very productive as you don't get chances to do mistakes. Its systemized and as you go on a track. There are very good platforms provide you high personal free mentorship /coaching. So you will expose and see.

The path I would take... I would bypass the SEO / Analytics route, I would go right for social. Your job for the next few months is to build your personal Instagram account to crazy levels. 3000 5000 followers... more is better. Lite up Tic Tok,

If you goto a job interview what do you think the first thing they are going to look atis? you got it your social accts. if you cant build your own, why would I hire you to build mine right?

    Welcome!
With digital marketing, you have to know the kind of product you want to sell.
This is not a one day get the rich type of business. You have to be persistent and focused.

You want a clear vision of where you want your business to go and keep at it
until you have success. It's a journey.

It is hard when you are a newbie and don't know how to start. I was like that when I started but now I know what I want to do which is affiliate marketing to start with then I can move on to anything else in the future.

You need a good mentor that will teach you the right way to do things if not, you'll hustle.

That's just my little tips and I hope it helps.

Focus on one method. If you like SEO focus on mastering that skill. Either way you need to learn the fundamentals of sales and marketing. Plenty of affordable books in amazon you can read about digital marketing and SEO.

To learn more about how digital marketing dynamics work you also refer to Hubspot courses. They are free of cost and upon successful completion of the course and exam they also award you with a certificate.
Now, where to start is totally your call whether you want to incline your skills towards performance marketing or you want to stick to organic marketing. Once you decide on that, then you can proceed with acquiring skills.

SEO is a great way to earn income online. It's slow at first, especially if you're in a competitive niche market, which is why most people give up too early, thinking that it doesn't work. Google Analytics can help you a lot in knowing what's going on inside your website, where your traffic (web users) is coming from, etc. It's definitely worth gaining some SEO skills.
