Best SEO Tactic For Building a New Website While Old Page Still Exists

I have a client who has a strong SEO presence, but needs to build a new homepage currently separate from the original page. Eventually, the entire site will be migrated to this new page, but for now, it will mostly redirect to the old page.

How should I best go about doing this? Right now my devs are planning on an approach of making the new site the current.client.com, and the current site something like old.client.com. That seems to not be the best practice- what would you do in this

    I'd say create a new website on new.client.com and leave the main site the same. You don't want to run with different links and then change it again to confuse everyone, including search engines.

    When the work is done at new.client.com, make the transition and you're done.

    Your approach sounds like your client want to run with the new website development for a year. This way they can have the initiative to speed it up and launch it faster.
