SEO rankings with URL's

Hi, I have a question regarding SEO rankings with URL's. My understanding is URL's have minimal influence on rankings on Google, correct? I have sites with hundreds of articles and while they're organized in-site for viewer navigation, they aren't in their URL's. Which means, all my URL's are like this:

www.domain.com/article-name

However, if I were to implement categories for all my articles, would it help my rankings? Or hurt them (shorter URL's generally do better than longer ones)? For example, I can do this:

www.domain.com/category/article-name

Which of the two URL's will be better for SEO rankings purely from Google's POV? Or there will be no difference? Thanks!

    article name vs category article name...

    This is dependent on a few things but one in particular... is the "Category" a keyword.. AND is the same keyword repeated in the article name?

    Its ok to do this once in a while, but you don't want to do it with each and every article. meaning:

    books/coloring-books-for-kids - not overly advised

    books/Tom-Sawyer - All day long - this is actually what you want.

    The issue you are going to run into at this point in the game is you already have an established site with many URL's and you cant just go and make the switch. You would have search results trying to find "coloring-books-for-kids" and the new URL would be "books/coloring-books-for kids" What this means, is you would have to 301 redirect ( you can look that up ) all of the current content to match the new URL.
