Sudden Bounce Rate Increase

Hi all,
Over the month my bounce rate has increased significantly. At the start of the month, we were in between 25-40% average, then we jumped to 50-60% 2 weeks ago and then last week it jumped again to 70%+

I know you can't judge bounce rate too closely, but our website is a services/blog site and thus the bounce rate gives a good insight into how our traffic is interacting with the content.

1. Should I be concerned or do I need to wait a couple more weeks to see if this is a sustained issue?
2. Any reasons as to why the bounce rate has increased so exponentially?

    Well, first things first. Where did the traffic come when the bounce rate was low, where did it come when it was high?


    Robots hitting your site a few hundred times a day may be the reason.

    Make sure speed optimization is done properly, as usually when we update new elements such as content, images, videos, or add new landing pages, things need to get rechecked to ensure everything is responsive. Moreover, check your search console too if it detects any error.

    Is bounce rate increasing across the same traffic sources or just overall?

    Unusually low bounce rate for new sites is often caused by the website owner / team members / family / friends showing up in Google Analytics, who don't reflect the browsing patterns of normal website visitors.

    You can filter these out in Google Analytics.

    Bounce rate depends on visitors - are they actually really interested in your content in the first place?


    If your site is messy then that will put people off. My bounce rate went up 10% because I had too many ads on there.


    Fine tune your top menu links as this can help and focus on providing deep value for visitors (e.g. don't make a boring blog, make a tool for them to use).

    High bounce rate usually means that the traffic that you are getting these leads from is not good at all and you should not buy anymore.

    You can do another test and use another autoresponder company and see if the same thing is happening with that same traffic too.

    If it does, completely stop buying traffic from that particular source.

    Check your website on Google Search Console, Core web vitals can be the issue that increases Bounce rate.
