Hey there. I've been working with lots of texts for my site recently and understand that my writing skills are far from what I would call good. Are there any good marketing writing courses/books worth spending money on? Better those you've taken/read yourself. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend looking at Coursera. They have several different courses to develop your writing skills. You can pick the areas you need to Improve. Here is the website link - https://www.coursera.org/ You can also look into edX they have similar courses about writing. - https://www.edx.org/

A person who studies the suggestions (the whys and how it all fits together) can learn tons of helpful writing tips from https://ProWritingAid.com. It covers not just grammar and spelling but style, clarity, etc.

For learning how to write in the context of marketing, check out AWAI.

I don't know if they still offer it - but in the past ezinearticles had one of the best 'writing' series I've seen anywhere.

it was a free email series you could sign up for - and totally free

If you are looking for the old way- reading books and putting into practice what the authors preach, here are a couple of books that I have read (for content writing) and was recommended-

    1. Everybody Writes: Your Go To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content by Ann Handley.

This book was truly especially good with tons of practical suggestions, how to's and tips for content writers, bloggers and marketers. It talks about building empathy for the readers, a great way to establish virtual bonds and retain their attention. You can apply Handley's teachings for all spaces, be it your Facebook page, blogs, marketing newsletters, emails or other social media platforms. The book veers away from traditional marketing to keep your writing contemporary and relevant. So, if possible, do give this a try!

    2. The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century by Steven Pinker

Again, this is an oft quoted book and a "classic" by Steven Pinker who is famous for bridging language and cognitive science together. Well the book is recommended for anybody willing to understand the fundamentals of writing and how one can write in a world bombarded with LOLs and instant messages. Though not especially made for marketers, it focuses on one essential element every writer needs: style. The book draws extensively from the latest linguistics and cognitive science research to inform us about style and how to develop one in our writing. More importantly it drives home the idea that language is fluid and bending the rules now and then can actually produce best results. To know more, you can definitely pick up this book.

    3. Write Tight: How to Keep Your Prose Sharp, Focused and Concise by William Brohaugh

Though I haven't read it yet, it is on my TBR list. From what I understand, the book is a storehouse of information about how to block redundant writing, stay away from empty modifiers and other such practical grammatical rules and tips. The book prompts the readers to critically introspect our writing and recognise flaws, which is a great way to actually improve our writing.

There are many more books that offer zillions of writing tips, but so far I have only had contact with the above three. Just in case you are interested in a bit of light reading amongst the heavy stuff, there is Ruskin Bond's How To Be a Writer. It is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek anecdotal book that will rekindle the joy of writing.

I also found someone mention Coursera and edx, which I totally agree with. They have a good catalog ranging from creative writing courses to business writing.

Hope you find the best resources soon!

I have never used writing course or something like that. I just read the books and various articles from professional writers who always share their experience of writing. Subscribe to their blogs and monitor everything they post. Remember that you should not only understand what you read, but also simultaneously analyze how the writer created this post, which methods he/she used and what style did he/she choose for this particular post.

This thing will develop your creative thinking and you will start to understand how it's significant to write in a proper style and with a proper vocabulary. It's tough, but actually, as for the question, I can't recommend the courses.
Better concentrate on various books and guides from the net. Analyze, research and fulfill.

    Hi Ann,

Henneke at Enchanting Marketing Dot Com excels as a writing teacher. Her posts are on point.

I would also add that writing 1000 words daily in a Word document just for practice is the direct way to become a skilled, confident, clear writer. Keep writing. Eventually, the words flow smoothly, clearly and cogently.
