Compensation for using private photographer's media on Youtube Video

Hi. I'm focusing on creating relaxation, motivational, white noise videos for people who can't sleep or study without background audio of some kind. Focusing on a few niche topics for these videos. I've been watching YT educational videos on the topic and have a list of copyright free and public domain media sites, however, I'm concerned that Youtube may not monetize my videos if the audio or photo/video is not original or my own created content. I have recently come across some amazing footage (video and photos) of a private photographer (not professional) on Facebook and have contacted her via Messenger. She has no idea how to monetize her skills, did an article in a photography magazine, but that's about it. I want to propose to her that I use her media in my videos. What sort of compensation is normal for this type of partnership? Percentage of monetization income once the videos are YT qualified for ads? A flat rate? Or photo/video credits in the description of my videos? Her photos are so good, I wondered why they were not at least water marked. Your thoughts please? Also, do you know if it's true that Youtube may not monetize copyright free or public domain uploads to relaxation videos? Thank you.

    I'm not sure about your final question but in terms of compensation, I would go for the percentage on monetized income from the work, as this protects you; you earn nothing, and you haven't had to pay her anything. This is also a good incentive for her as its recurring income potentially, that she can get so she may be more likely to accept your offer. Thanks, Blair

      If she's like me, this is a good incentive to not do anything.


      In order for her to have recurring incentive, someone must pay the OP. Nobody's going to pay the OP if the OP is not good at marketing.


      A flat fee takes care of the incentive for her completely.


      A flat fee + recurring income from sales, if she's making nothing now and she thinks the OP has a chance of selling and is honest, she might be into this.


      A percentage of future sale (gross or net?) might be nothing more than a day dream.


      If the OP were Bill Gates, Eban Pagan, someone with a good record, it would be enticing, as long as there's a good contract thrown in the mix.

    If she's smart, she'd take a pass on that. Reminds me of posts we used to see on this forum...from newbies who offered 30% or 50% of 'future sales' to any experienced marketer who work 'work with me' or 'coach me'.


    50% of nothing is nothing...unless the OP has a history of successful launches and money making sites... pay a fee plus some sort of percentage of sales....AND give credit to the photographer.


    Fees don't have to be high - a reasonable fee for use of the photos, plus a small (quarterly?) percentage of net sales...AND also list the credits.
