Huge Amount on Spam on Newer website with Aged Domain

Hello Kyle here, new to this forum.

I get all kinds of opt ins on my website that has a auction domain, I would consider ditching it but it had a 37 UR/DR on Ahrefs which I think is good....I got anti spam protection I had thought, the Wordpress plugin that comes standard. I want to rank this website and lease out leads, but spam is the top concern I have right now.

Any thoughts?

Askimet is the plugin I have and its not stopping much of this at all.

As someone who uses automation, I get theres gonna be some "spam" but I dont understand where its all coming from. I dont think I can rent out this nice looking site because the spam on the opt in form would piss even patient business owners off.

Should I start with a fresh domain? This domain that I have currently though has a high UR/DR and Authority score.

    What should I do?

Is the spam coming through a contact form? If so, what are you using?

    Is it coming from comments?

I am using Contact Form 7, I this plugin has been around a while.

Might I add the site I have has around 10K backlinks according to SEMRush.

My content/keywords are barely pulling in traffic, yet I see my contact form opt ins piling up in gmail all day with a new email for every 100. See for me to be able to rent this site I think I would have to tell the business owner to search a certain area code to find the leads and thats not gonna fly with most people.

This is my first official R&R site, though Ive done work on a family site and some other projects. I chose to fix this site on this domain because I thought the AHREFS UR/DR of 37 was high (SEMRush Authority score of 20). Perhaps I overlooked something on the backlinks, but the high authority this site gives off would rank content quicker if Im correct.

The backlinks may be bringing some traffic but that's not really related to the spam problem in my opinion. I've had sites with basically no traffic and domain names that had never been used that kept getting hammered.
Here are some things to try:

    1. I've never used Askimet but the premium version may help. Or maybe you can check the settings.
    2. You need a firewall or security solution other than just Askimet. There are a lot of options so you'll need to spend some time doing a little research as to what you need and then installing it, etc. Or you may opt for hiring someone to set up the protection for you. If you aren't careful, a "consultant" can do more harm than good so you'll need to do some homework before hiring.
    3. Putting ReCAPTCHA on the form may help keep out bots.
    4. Check with your host and see what help they can provide. You may need a host upgrade depending on how secure your host is.

If it was me, I would put ReCAPTCHA on it today and see what happens. And then, you need to still secure your site but that alone may solve your spam problem.

    Good luck.
