How To Approach Manager Question

I believe this is my very first post on the forum, so hello everyone!

About 3 months ago I landed a job as a Jr SEO Copywriter doing product description copy, while providing SEO titles, tags, and meta descriptions for the products. My manager compliments my work I have done, so I would like to use it in my portfolio.

M question is how would I ask my manager if I could use some of the product description text in my portfolio? I worry this will make me sound like I have a goal to leave the company to do freelance work, and this is not the case until years later.

I enjoy the work and would like to add some freelance client work when I'm not working.

How would I go about asking this? Or should I just write something on the side and do separate projects based in this niche?

If it were me, I would not do that. The work you are doing now belongs to your employer and three months on the job is not a long time.

Instead, I would look for a few quality freelance sites and do some work there to build a portfolio.

When your freelance work is similar to or the same as your 'real life job', I would keep them completely separate.

I agree with Kay King. and to add to that... I would NOT be doing work in the same niche. Your employer will probably see that as direct competition, and not sure that will go over well.

I wouldn't ask "my manager " or copy .I would write something original .Also Google will penalize you for duplicating product descriptions or content.

I would go along and do my work on the side because there is no need to set off any alarms or ruin the relationship that I have with my manager .

Don't. Instead, take a few minutes each evening, find a product on amazon.com or such site. Write a better description. Save it in your portfolio.

Better yet, use items you own and use. The photos you take of them are yours, no need to worry about copyright.
