How to stop someone from ruining my link-building and SEO efforts?

Hello,

I'm the owner of a website. I want to create a good search engine presence using 100% white-hat SEO. I'm strictly following all Google guidelines about SEO. I created the best possible website and link-building profile. I follow the skyscraper strategy. I had links only from the highest authority websites in my niche. The process was long and tiring. More than a year of work. The results were not long in coming. I started receiving orders for the services I provide. After a few months of rapid business growth, the number of new orders begins to gradually decrease. At first, I thought it was normal due to the summer season. Summer has passed. Autumn comes, but the customers don't come back.

Today I saw in Google Search Console that I have more than new 250 linking websites. All of these websites are the complete opposite of the websites from which I want links.
  • Low-quality websites with low domain and pages authority;
  • Web Pages from 100% irrelevant niches;
  • Badly automatically generated content;

This seems like some kind of Black Hat technique for ruining my work and SEO presence. My questions are:
  1. What is the name of this technique? I want to get more information about it.
  2. How can I protect myself from such attacks on my website?
  3. Is there an easy way to remove these bad links to my webpage? I can report all these links to Google as unwanted links. Google recommends removing them from web pages too otherwise their power will still have a big impact on my website. For example, currently, I have 20 good links and 250 bad ones.....

I'll appreciate the assistance of everyone who knows more than me about such issues!

  • This is called "negative SEO" or "spam backlinks" and is a process that used to work until Google changed its algorithm a couple of years ago to make the process ineffective. Google says these links now will be ignored.

    If you're worried, you can always disavow them in Google Search Console.

    The question I have is, did you see your rankings drop?

    • I'm monitoring my ranking with Serpfox and Google Search Console (GSC).

      The data from GSC doesn't show a dramatic ranking drop on average base. The average ranking has a normal level of fluctuation +-2-3 position.

      Worrying things are that in GSC I'm seeing:

      - a drop in ranking for money-making keywords with 10-15 positions;
      - I'm starting to qualify for ranking for nonsense keywords for my business. These words are not even mentioned anywhere on my page; These are anchor texts of the links located on spammy websites.

      An additional worrying fact according to SerpFox:

      - The geographical location of the ranking is shifting. For example if before spammy links I was ranked for Keyword-X at position 3 in the USA, at position 5 in the UK, and position 1 in Australia. Now I've lost rank in the USA, UK, and Australia, but I started ranking on positions 2,4, 6 in Cambodia, Nigeria, and India.

      These facts explain why the new orders drop - I don't deliver to such places. The business in Cambodia is totally different than the USA.

      My thoughts on the subject are that the attack has still not achieved the maximum possible damage. As we know Google's algorithm is complicated. Serious attention is paid to the user experience. That's why if Google detects that I have let's say 100 visitors from Nigeria and only 10 visitors from the USA (most likely existing old clients). I'm afraid that the algorithm will decide that the website is targeting clients in Nigeria and, as a result, it is possible to continue receiving a better ranking in Nigeria and a worse ranking in the USA. This new ranking will be based on the user experience and visitors' demography.

  • What I'm doing in this case;

    Regularly check my backlinks. I use Google Search Console or Ahrefs to keep an eye on my rankings, find links that aren't very good, and disavow them.

    Getting good rankings is something I think is important. The best way to protect myself from bad SEO is to get high-quality links from websites related to my site.

  • It seems like some algo update is in progress, all of my ranked pages are removed form google result. But it comes back again if you do some modification on your pages and reindex your pages with google indexing api. Keep few more websites as a backup option as I have seen organic search can vanish any time within an hour and you keep scratching your head what just happened. Best way to get continuous traffic is to create a YouTube blog as well, send traffic from your YouTube blog.

      - I already wrote to all the lousy website owners. I didn't receive any responses from most of them. I received a few responses that they don't want to remove the links.

  • As I said before, just disavow the links via Google Search Console if you are worried about them. Stop wasting your time contacting websites about links that should not matter to Google anyway, but on the extreme off-chance that they do, use the tool Google has given you.

    Incidentally, back in the day, Google originally introduced the disavow links section within Search Console as a direct response to the exact negative SEO tactic you are talking about. Since then, they have changed their algorithm (many times) and said the links shouldn't matter.
