This is not a technical article, just my point of view about PHP.
Presently, PHP and .net framework is two most technologies using to build dynamic websites. The power of .net framework and Visual Studio .net is not deniable. However, the longer I work with .net, the more I love PHP .
Too many things with .net are costly. First, most of professional will use Visual Studio standard or professional version, instead of the free Visual Studio Express. Most of solutions proposals run with Ms. SQL server standard version, so developers suppose to work with that Ms. SQL version too. When coming to deployment, .net application will need a window environment (the most common is Windows Server 2003), with Ms. SQL installed. Everything costs, that make a windows hosting package usually slightly more expensive for the same resources. Website traffic increases should consider good news, if you don’t have to upgrade your hosting package to a VPS or a full server, because it comes together with the cost of Windows Server environment and Ms. SQL installation. Overall, using .net technology will increase your application operating cost by one way or another. That maybe why not so many good .net open source applications exists.
Joining the PHP community is somewhat like enters a freedom world. MySQL is free, Apache is free, phpMyAdmin is free, and Linux is free. Of course there are other tools and versions that have price, but those free versions still are enough to build and run good applications. That certainly encourages developers to contribute open source applications to the community. On open source CMS, while the best .net open source CMS is Dotnetnuke, with PHP we have Joomla, WordPress, Drupal, Xoops, and possible others which all work well. On open source CRM, seem that there is only a single application of Splendid CRM, with PHP we have SugarCRM, VTigerCRM, CiviCRM and many more. For other application type such as forum, ERP, the same thing happens.
There will be an argument that those who work with .net with support of Microsoft tools can work faster and more efficient. However, customers are the decision makers that our applications should be cheap and run well. Whether an application performs well or not is not depend on what language it used, but how it is programmed, which is the responsibility of developers. From that point of view, PHP is look better than its .net colleague.
You certainly can trust PHP in building any type of website. The matter is to choose the right developers. If you ever need some of them, please take sometime to visit us as http://www.citigo.net. We have more than one PHP developer team here available for your any request.
