A very well known Social Media expert, Tom Raftery, posted a blog not too long on 15 Twitter tips for beginners.

He did an excellent job with providing some useful tips on how to get the most out of using Twitter for building relationships and brand awareness. As I was skimming through his blog, I felt that I needed to elaborate on some of these tips and add a few more of my own.

Tip #1: Start Posting
Post some mundane status updates on Twitter. This is a great way to get started. If you don’t start getting of the habit of posting on Twitter, it will never happen. Start with like four posts per day and work your way up from there. Baby steps are better than nothing and believe me people are watching in Twittersphere even if you think they are not. Also, make sure to write Tweets that pertain to your bio. For example, when I write a Tweet, I might include one about what I am doing and then another one about Internet Marketing, etc. Make sure to Tweet other people’s articles and blog posts and not just your own. Sprinkle yours in from time to time but don’t just do ones that drive traffic back to your site, because you will definitely look like a spammer and lose followers fast!

Tip #2: Start Following
Tom recommends that you start building up your network by following your friends and acquaintances first. Another great idea is to start following some experts in your field as well. You can do this by going to Twellow and searching for leaders on Twitter in your industry. Start following them and the people that are following them. By doing so, you will gain followers!

Tip #3: Start Engaging
In Tom’s post, he recommends that you start communicating with others that aren’t following you by using the @UserName function. I totally agree with him on this one. If you don’t start engaging with others that aren’t following you, then you are missing out on the opportunity to connect with them. Twitter is all about engaging in conversation and stepping out to reach people.

Tip #4: Twitter Influence and Grade
In Tom’s post he mentions TwitterGrader, which will tell you how you rank in your local area as a Twitter user. There is another tool that you can use to measure your influence on Twitter called TWInfluence. Both of these tools are not only fun to see how you rank in Twitter but are also valuable with providing you insight on other Twitter users as well as your own.

Tip #5: Making Your Twitter Profile Stand Out
In Tom’s blog post, I believe it is his Tip 11, he mentions adding a photo on your profile. I wanted to expand on this a little for those of you wanting to build your brand awareness online. If you plan on using Twitter as an online marketing tool, definitely consider creating a customized Twitter background design which makes your Twitter profile stand out from the crowd. Here are a couple different designs that I like to give you an idea:

Tip #6: In Tom’s bonus tip, he talks about using your Twitter username elsewhere such as business cards, emails, and blog comments. I would add to this to use your Twitter Username in all of your other Social Media profiles as well such as LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.

These are just a few of hundreds of tips that we could elaborate on with using Twitter as an emarketing tool. I encourage you to read his blog post if you are a newbie Twitter user.

What other tips would you recommend when using Twitter as part of an online marketing campaign for our fellow Twitter newbies?
