Social Media in Business and Betty White

A few weeks ago I was doing some research into using Social Media in business and I happened upon an interesting reference to the popular actress, Betty White.

I write about this in more detail in my Home Business blog post, How Social Media Marketing Gave Betty White A Boost. I’ll give Warrior Forum readers a quick overview here in this WF blog post.

This might be old news to some of you, but for some reason either I had never heard about it, or maybe I just wasn’t interested in it at the time. Anyway, back in 2010, fans of Betty White launched a Facebook campaign to try to get Betty on Saturday Night Live as the host for an evening. After going viral, the campaign was successful and Betty got to be the host of SNL on May 8 of that same year.

I shared this story on my blog as an example of the power of Social Media marketing and how it can influence real-time events.

I also quoted some references from the Wikipedia site, including the statement, “Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites.”

With reference to Social Media in business, Wikipedia notes that “A corporate message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself.”

The Wikipedia entry also says, “Social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns.”

The two key points to this that you can take and apply to your home-based Internet Marketing business are one, Social Media is an inexpensive way for you to create brand awareness for your business or products; and two, if you develop your social marketing skills effectively, you will inspire your customers and prospects to help you spread your message to countless people in their personal circles of influence. Your message could potentially go viral.

Of course, the challenge is coming up with a style of presentation that captures the interest of your readers and motivates them to want to share it with others. This will mean providing a mix of high quality, niche-related information that has real value to them, combined with a stimulating, exciting and entertaining presentation style.

Easier said than done. It will take some commitment and effort on your part. But if you work at it you will develop a following, and once your base of followers reaches a certain level, you may see the beginnings of a potential viral machine.

Betty White had a fan following to begin with, so it is no surprise that her SNL Facebook campaign went viral. If you work at making some outstanding contributions in your market niche, you can tap into the power of Social Media in business, too.
