If you play Wizard 101, there are a few things you can do to make combat work a little better in your favor.

First, choose your deck wisely. Rather than having to rearrange your deck every time you face a different opponent, just keep a variety of decks in your backpack. At the very least have a secondary deck so that if you are fighting someone from your school you can use some alternative spells. Then, depending on what school you are fighting, switch to the deck required.

Second, always check to see if you can discard any cards before you play your card. If you have 3 pixies in your hand, and may only need one during combat, discard the other two as soon as you can to make room for better damage-dealing cards.

Third, focus damage on a single target. If an enemy has only 1 hit point, it still gets to cast and do full damage to you. If you are in a group and everyone spreads their damage around, it's keeping all 4 enemies up, dealing damage to you. Have them burn down the lowest-health enemy first, then move to the next one, etc. (The exception to this is Damage-Over-Time spells...don't waste those on low-health enemies who will be dead before the DOT can be used up.)
