I'm using Yahoo Groups to drive traffic to my sites as well as to my clients' sites. Works every time.

You must've heard that there are a lot of SPAMS in Yahoo Groups. Yes it's true. But the good news is, moderated Groups have less spam. Moderators filtered them out before emails are posted to Group members.

I've joined 25 moderated groups with members totaling around 500k. That's not many, considering the hundreds of thousands of Yahoo Groups with millions of active members. My membership to Yahoo Groups changes, so are the numbers of my audience. I dropped out from some Groups when moderators went missing and joined other Groups.

So you have to pick and choose well. Be every selective. Then really interact with members until they trust and respect you. Yeah... its hard work and requires patience.

Yahoo Groups Is Viral

Yahoo Groups are microcosms of digital communities around the world - just like any other social media. Every group has it's own soul, energy, uniqueness, atmosphere and culture.

The best thing about Yahoo Groups is that, it is very viral. Each email post to any Yahoo Groups will reach all members in their email boxes. Members would then forward interesting posts to other Groups, Forums, Social Media, friends and even to Online Newspapers.

I mentioned Online Newspapers because I've seen my articles copied and pasted there - unedited. Usually in the OPINION sections. That means more eyeballs.

When I want traffic, I'll login to my Yahoo Groups and write a nice article or two. Most of the time, I just chimed in to current email discussions. It works every time to get crowds to click my anchor texts or hyperlinked signatures.

The Crowds In Yahoo Groups

Crowds anywhere are made of all sorts of people - fanatics, loons, intellectuals, blurs, liberals, right-wing, left-wing, conservatives, diablos, angels, snake-oil salesmen, provocateurs, super-friendly, ultra-sensitive, dominant snobs, split personalities, whiners, cry-babies and silent observers.

The same goes for Yahoo Groups. The difference is in Yahoo Groups they express themselves, unlike when they're in the streets.

Still, the silent ones are the majority. Most will not respond directly in public. They dislike exposure. Some would send their reactions directly to me - positive or negative. Some even want me to explain things to the public on their behalf. Love them.

So out of the thousands of users, some will follow my posts and some plainly hate my guts. The touchy ones blocked me or ignored me. The main reason is there were times that I'm quite blunt on certain topics. ...

At times, I do sway the crowds. Some other times, I triggered a jubilant atmosphere. On some occasions, I provoked a rash of angry responses. There were also times, I created a sombre atmosphere. What I really want is to attract a good stream of responses, thus giving my posts greater exposure.

How To Drive Traffic Even If You're Not Well Liked

Despite not being well liked by certain quarters, I can still drive more traffic. I'll buy banner spaces from moderators. These banners will appear as headers on each member's email discussions. The banners are not posted from any Tom, Dick or Harry. The moderators would usually place them on posts sent by respected members, who usually get crowd attention and responses.

You can pay for one-time blast, just like SOLO ADs. You can pay for daily blast up to 2 weeks or have ads on 5 posts a day. Also the same emails with the banners are posted in the groups' online post pages. So your ads stay there for quite awhile. It all depends on advertising policies set by moderators.

There are fine-grain methods but it will make this post too long.

You Don't Need To Be A Good Writer

You have to trawl around much until you get some warm, active and interesting places with moderators. Get some respect and gain some authority. Even if you don't have the time to reach a respected level, you still have your chance to get some exposure.

IMHO from my limited experience since 2007, the best kinds of Yahoo Groups are the non-niche ones. Everything goes in such groups - politics, economy, social issues, fashion, education, health, kids, jobs and etc. Different topics run concurrently in the email discussions.

So you get to chime in as a person when any discussion touches a facet of your life. And that is THE marketing and branding "window of opportunity" not to be missed.

Just like in any community such as Facebook, Twitter and Forums - you give something good, you'll get something good back.
